I like the idea of a Fey Barbarian for two possible reasons. First of all, the Fey have a reputation of launching themselves into deliriously manic fits of emotion, which already fits with the Barbarian's iconic rage mechanic. Second of all, the magical longevity of the Fey might appeal to the barbarian's warrior spirit, as they seek a glorious death while still in the prime of their life, instead of withering away in their beds from disease and aging.
I'm thinking a Parasite Warlock and Vampire. They fit surprisingly well. Draining Spells like a vampire does blood, gaining Sangromancy Spells, becoming more powerful as a dark being inside you matures and grows. Plus it reminds me of one of my favorite games, Code Vein.

We just started a gritty style game set in Innistrad and the Grimm Hollow books have been extremely helpful. I had not thought of the Vampire/Barbarian mix but I like it.
Just ordered the Grim Hollow Campaign guide and can't wait! Will also get the Players guide soon too. Im already working on the campaign and transformations are gonna be a huge part of it. In fact thats kinda the main plot. The players will become cursed and have to figure out how to remove it or use it...the curse causes these transformations. (And no remove curse spells wont do the trick). The players will get to choose which transformation they want. They'll have to cope with learning to control it..or letting it consume them. So in a way Im working on a good path and an evil path so to speak. Player choice will decide the outcome like always. Maybe they'll walk a grey path. All I know is Im excited to run it..once it gets ready. Cant wait for that book to come in!
I got to play a changeling parasite warlock aberrant horror. It was "Among Us" themed one-shot, and I was 1 of the 2 villains. It was awesome! Villains were victorious!
My party has agreed that transformations will only be made available at key moments during the campaign, so players can't plan for or build towards them, they have to be acquired purely naturally. They haven't even seen the transformations in the books, so it'll be a fun surprise when they finally do encounter one.
Ok. But. Also. You skipped over the Abherration monk. It’s so strong mechanically, and role playing wise it becomes a balance between maintaining whatever sense of self you had with the writhing mass of destruction you are now. How do you reconcile the ideology of the open hand when the hands you use aren’t hands anymore? Or the way of mercy? There’s a lot to explore with that.

Now he wishes to use his power to bring law to the lawless lands around him. His vow to bring law and control is what keeps him sane as he teeters on the edge of evil while he battles to maintain control of his own self.
@@GhostfireGaming mechanically speaking he's an absolute tank because of full plate, a +2 shield, the ability to cast haste, and the bloodfury defensive stance. Along with being able to make 4 attacks all at advantage because of his channel divinity.
Bro I am also playing as a Dhampir Paladin, but he is a operative of the Crimson court. Whom is keeping eye on the other party members to not get off of the leash of the Court. His God is Kanchelsis he worships. He is Transforming into a full-blooded Vampire that he is really enjoying! Because with the Grim Hollow setting I thought to myself "Why resist evil when you can be it?"
I have many ideas I want to hit up someday. Vampire Cleric, Werewolf Druid (or a Lunar Soul Sorcerer), a Specter Ranger or Rogue, a Sorcerer Lich. Many fun and lovely or terrifying ideas
I played a Werebear barbarian once. Which kinda backfired because only magical/silvered attacks could harm me, but my character was on a crusade to seek a honorable death. In the end, he died to a level 13 demon, by getting his soul ripped from his body.
I'm in a campaign with all our PCs having their own transformations. I'm playing a Vermin Lord Ranger with the Specter transformation, it's been a blast!

i think barbarian werewolf works pretty well. when he rages he has to fight to not transform making his rage ability something he only uses in desperate situations as a last resort. if he's a totem barbarian you can make him slowly turn into whatever beast he chose
Question on the Vampire Barbarian. How does one heal the Barbarian, since the Level 1 flaw makes him undead. It seems like the major healing available to the players (healing word, cure wounds, lay on hands) would not work on him. Barbarians take a lot of damage, how do they stay viable without healing?
It's a good question, and your mileage may vary with my take on it: You can still be healed, but this healing comes in the form of temporary hp instead of healing your actual hp. So you can still get the full benefit of healing spells, they just won't stack but will still last until a long rest. You need to rely on stronger single burst healing (like a life cleric stacking on bonuses), as opposed to several lesser spells. You could game it a little by taking some minor amount of damage (a hp or two) and then use an ordinary healing spell to buff you past max. Plus the barb's rage halves damage on Temp hit points as well, do you're still going down slower. That said, Transformations were designed to be a "curse" as much as a "boon", and the inability to heal naturally is a strong RP opportunity that might mean your vampire barbarian avoids being in the thick of combat as much for their safety as everyone elses.
Fury points of Fanged Bite. Once you attack you get a fury point. Use your bonus action to bite. Using your strength gives you bonus rage damage as well. Then if target fails a Con save you do 2d6 necrotic damage to them and that necrotic damage heals you. You can possibly self heal and do more damage every turn.
I’m making a character named jade, a young man who was tormented by a crow shadow demon since he was a boy, when he grew up he fused with the crow shadow demon and uses his new powers to slay monsters and evil mortals. He has a magic crossbow with explosive arrows. This character I’m playing in a dark fantasy campaign I’m planning.
My vampire cleric has 0 synergy, but that's the point 😅. His whole reason to allow his own existence is to resurrect his brother but he sucks at this kind of spell, "revivify" raising deads instead of reviving them, cursing instead of blessing sometimes. For me as a player is a lot of fun, but I know my pc suffers intensely. 😂

How about Earth primordial and way of pride monk? +1 wisdom* +2 constitution for this monk build is perfect: we are probably looking at 16 con 16 wis with a higher dex score. 1.Primordial affinity x2 PB or (x2 PB +wisdom* mod. if under 1/2 health) temporary hit point when spending ki points . This should help them to maintain his buffs when under 1/2 hit points more safely. 2. Elemental surge: range attacks and more TH when needed 3. Primeval body, resistance to bludgeoning, slashing and piercing dmg. very useful to help staying alive under 1/2 HP and double the usage of TP gained. Multiclassing into warlock (Dao or Hexblade) could help this build dmg output while providing other combos. Hexblade hex could get us a crit fisher combo (hexblade curse) 1 per short rest: crits on 19-20, advantage for four attacks (irrational retaliation if needed), with a higher dice if under 1/2 HP +1 dice (Redoubled efforts), + 1 dice with a brutal weapon, +1 dice if half ork. When critting under 1/2 hp could get 2dice (+2 d6 when hex spell is on) +3 dice. When over 1/2 hp it's just a die less. Advantage on 4 attacks and crits on 19 and 20 give us around a 55% chance to crit at least once per turn. In other situations cast shield, use fiendish armor or armor of agathis when needed and help overall dmg with the hex spell. Fun and maybe kind of crazy build ^_^.
Other than the mechanical aspect, the roleplay aspect might developed with the attachment to jewelry, reflecting a pact made with a primordial trapped inside. The entity might promise the charcter to transform his spirit and body into indestructable stone while all it really want is to break free of its prison with his evenutal death. This could combine both the subclass idea with the transformation and the warlock multiclass.
Barbarian and Vampire? Doesn't work. The refined aspect of the vampire is completely lost, also, barbarians want to be always raging, all that "self control" you talk about goes against the class main feature.
