    As usual, Paul has the entire song fully formed and lyrics memorized as well as how it should be sung. His suggestions to Cilla here show that his ideas were best as usual.

      I couldn’t believe it when I heard. What an absolute gem & boy he is magic with that guitar. What a treasure. As an aside I had a little shot at Paul covering an old Beatles song. I received a reply a couple of weeks later from Paul , saying glad I loved the music. I was stoked couldn’t believe it . It was his account too.

      Give him a break Cal. 😅Not like he was performing the song for an audience, he was just showing Celia the parts. If u could be that good in just casual playing as the mood clearly suggests, then he could step it up far more , in an actual professional performance.

    Ooh, the way she drops her voice down to sing 'shoulder' at 3:20 so it sounds all warm and comforting just made my backbone go all tingly!

    • @Earthles77
      @Earthles77 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Agreed. I just wish that the final recording had been kept in this key, to get the smokey beauty of Cilla’s mezzo-range. In a higher key, her voice is more strident… still beautiful, but less alluring, in my opinion. But as George Martin says at the end “it’s far too low for you”. I would disagree, wouldn’t you?

    • @BackToTheBlues
      @BackToTheBlues 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Earthles77 Sorry for the late reply, TH-cam didn't tell me of your post! Yes, I agree with you and disagree with George Martin - in this key the her voice sounds absolutely lovely to me, but I can understand his way of thinking; it's likely he was considering how her voice would sit in the mix of a full band arrangement, and felt a higher pitch would give her a chance to push the vocals a bit more.

    Man, just listen to those unusual guitar chords and timing for the lyrics and how the melody changes directions so smooth;y and perfectly. McCartney had, and has, such an unusually well developed sense of melody and just think, he had no formal music training and he was only about 25 years old here.

  • @peterfriedman2830

    You can learn a lot about recording singers just by listening to this. There's a lot of "flutish breathiness" (some call it "smoke" or "whisky") in Cilla's lower registers. Take the key down and she has to sing low notes for this effect to make its presence felt, take it up and it disappears and her voice becomes much cleaner and far less "jazzy" (although to be fair, there's so much character in there already with all those little nuances and ornaments she adds to the ends of notes, combined with her signature tendency to add a distinctive crescendo "push" to the volume). It turns out that (as we all learned on Ram) Paul himself was very conscious of/interested in experimenting with 'throat rasp levels' as a very rich palette from which he could draw a seemingly boundless range of (often comically extreme and exaggerated) expression. Viz Monkberry moon delight.

      Monkberry moon delights vocals are so raw and powerful nothing like I heard from anyone else it must’ve taken a lot from him. 1985 one hand clapping version is also raw and powerful but crisp vocals, only Paul.

    • @peterfriedman2830
      @peterfriedman2830 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bigtrip6344 John's 'Twist and shout' vocals are the ones typically cited when considering the fab four's track record for doing anything 'out of character' on the vocal front. Whilst most people's go-to signature raspy vocals tended to be Louis Armstrong's, Rod Stewart's would come up next, probably followed by Slade's Noddy Holder, although the record for ultimate for grittiness undoubtedly goes to Tom Waits. Female vocalists of this type other than Cilla include Tina Turner, Elkie Books, Bonnie Tyler, Cleo Lane and Nina Simone, although with Cilla and Nina it was sometimes more of a nuance rather than being anything which dominated the character of their overall vocal performance.

I tend to underestimate Brian Epstein’s role in the talent that came out of Liverpool in the mid 60’s well before my time but I know all those faces . I love the way she interacts with everybody. Her description of the recording of Alfie was just beautiful. A remarkable video very well done . Would love to know where the Audio came from. Description is wrong this was 67 well before the White Album sessions. See : the demo version was recorded as a studio demo at Chappell Studios in London on 21 November 1967, with McCartney on guitar accompanying Black on vocals. That demo was the basis for the single, although whereas the McCartney demos were recorded in the key of D, the final arrangement of the single version was transposed up a fourth to G, to take advantage of Cilla's higher register

Bands like The Beatles , The Four Most, King Sized Taylor And The Dominoes and Rory Storm And The Hurricanes would ask Cilla onstage to join them and sing a song or two while they became her backing band. She added the ballards later on.

Hearing Paul work in the background and knowing exactly what everyone should be doing at any given point shows what a true master he is.
