ETHICS IN RESEARCH (TAMIL)

We will see in this video what are the good practices in research one by one and what are the consequences of violations of them and also how to safeguard oneself from these violations occurring.
Ethical practices should be followed in all stages of research like in selection of topics, Literature Review, writing the thesis, sampling, Collection and presentation of data, Presentation of Text and images, Analysis of Data, Interpretation of data, Selection of journals and publication. We will see some of the major forms of ethical violation which the researchers should guard themselves against. All these steps include Honesty, Objectivity, Acknowledgement, Reference credits, Authenticity, Purity, Intellectual Property rights etc.
The major types of ethical violation in Research are:
1.Plagiarism
2. Data Falsification
3. Data Fabrication
4. Duplicate publication
5.Conflict of Interest
While writing the research article or thesis, the researcher might want to mention the information and facts he learnt during literature survey. This he can do ethically by any one of the following the two methods
1. In-text citation, mentioning the source of information alongside the relevant sentences or in the
2. In the reference list at the end of the paper, article or thesis
Plagiarism: It is the most serious form of violation. If a researcher copies from other researchers published works any text, tables or images and publishes them as his own work then it is called plagiarism. It may be un intentional or intentional. Now, what constitute plagiarism?
1. Presenting someone else findings without a citation
2. Presenting someone else findings as his/her own
3. Presenting someone else information as new information
4. Repeating one’s own previously published matter without
a citation (self-plagiarism)
It may be un intentional or intentional.
Self -plagiarism: Copying one’s own text from previously published paper and presenting it as a new paper.
Here, you are going to learn two new terms. Data Falsification and Data Fabrication. Data Falsification means a researcher changes the data he got from an experiment or a survey whatever be the method, to suit his predicted result.
Data Fabrication means without conducting the experiment or without conducting the survey the researcher cooks up the data favorably to suit his conclusions. Note here, that falsify means modifying something that exist, fabricate means inventing something new.
Now comes the next step. Analysis of data. Analysis may involve many statistical procedures. The researcher may consult a statistician for selecting and using the appropriate statistical procedures or he may take up a course in statistics, which is the best practice but not just chooses any method he is familiar with.
Now comes the most important question that ever occupies the mind of a researcher. Who are all the persons to be included in my paper as authors? To be qualified for authorship, every author of a research paper should contribute intellectually to the research work. What is duplicate publication? Here, the researcher modifies some part of his own paper already published and tries to publish a new paper on the modified content. Formats and styles of referencing in a research thesis are formal requirements. Conflict of interest comes in to play when professional judgement concerning a primary interest (validity of the research or health of patients) may be influenced by a secondary interest (financial gain).
If at all you face a conflict of interest:
• accept the conflict of interest
• disclose the conflict of interest
• make sure that conflict of interest does not interfere ethical conduct
• Here we will see some examples for COI.
• Violation of ethical principles may lead to any one of the following:
• Rejection or Retraction of paper.
• Rejection- This happens before publication. When a research paper under peer review is found to be unethically done then it is rejected for publication
• Retraction- This happens after publication. When an already published paper is found to be unethically done then it is retracted from the journal
Not only researchers, Publishers also need to work ethically.
Researchers should be aware of Predatory Journals. What are predatory journals? Predatory journals are run by people who care only about money for themselves. They do not bother about science or ethics or research. They are only interested in making money by catching authors who desperately want to publish papers for job or promotion and luring them to publish somewhat inferior papers.
How to identify predatory journals?
• These suspicious journals will have over generic titles covering almost all subjects on earth.
• Editor or staffs from these suspicious journals will send unsolicited emails to authors asking for papers
• Grand words and claims are used in these suspicious journals.
