Said it before and i’ll say it again, executives don’t earn their pay, they never have, and they never will. The fact they get bonuses based on their subordinates’ performance is insane
Sometimes that fact can be used to your advantage. I had a job where my coworkers and I depended on other departments for support depending on what we were trying to do. They were not very supportive. One day I was invited to join a conference call with our department head. After a while she asked if we had any questions. I said yes. "What are we going to do about the broken processes?" She thought I was talking about software system problems. I interrupted and said, "That's not it." I then named problems with department after department and ended with, "we can't do our job because the other departments aren't supporting us." The sht hit the fan. A problem with one department where 19 days was considered fast went to 2 days being slow. She was a dragon and I just got her to understand that the other departments were hurting her year end bonuses. Things got a lot easier after the other departments stopped humping the hound.
Most executives do earn their pay, however what they do is often misunderstood by people and even the person in the job. It's their job to make sure everything runs smoothly, to ensure success. A good executive makes sure this happens and most people don't notice, a bad one tries to control everything. It's like an orchestra, everyone is able to play without a conductor but the conductor makes sure everything runs smoothly.
