D-Day 75: Over 30 Dakota aircraft fly historic route

- To mark the D-Day 75 anniversary week of events, the greatest number of Douglas C-47 Skytrains, Dakota aircraft, have assembled together for the first time since the Second World War. Over 30 Dakotas flew from Duxford Aerodrome following the historic route to northern France where paratroopers descended on Normandy.

I simply cannot fathom watching 100s of these take off and form up.
Actually, over 800 of them in the very early hours of June 6, 1944. They took off from dozens of camps in the U.K.

at the 0:42 mark, with cockpit Id letters "CD" is "Betsy's Biscuit Bomber", a C-47B built in 1943. It was flown from Paso Robles California making whistle stops along the way over a months time. It flew to Duxford England, coming by way of the Greenland route. The aircraft is part of the Estrella Warbirds Museum collection here in Paso Robles California. This aircraft's last U.S. missions were flying the Berlin Airlift, it was sold to Israel and was later purchased back from the Israeli Air Force and refurbished, there is an Israeli language sign painted on the interior that roughly says, "The only replacement for a Dakota, is another Dakota". The plane was a military transport it's whole life and never converted for civilian us. It still has all of it's original equipment to include that used for towing combat gliders.

That's great. I used to be active at Estrella Warbirds Museum and had an aircraft at PRB. I moved away after 30+ years. Who were the crew stateside and 'over there'?

Thanks for uploading this! especially without music or chit chat, it really makes one think about this momentous & monumental occasion that helped to end WWII. Thinking about the lost & those whose boys didn't come home & those who were scarred by WWII

That's a great way to remember. Just thinking about the guys that were on them at the time, must have been a totally different feeling-they would have appreciated this very much.

Flew over my house yesterday whilst crossing the Thames heading for Eastbourne vis Southend. Wife asked how we would know Iwhen it was happening I said listen you'll hear them!!

The C-47 played an incredibly important role in the D-Day invasion 75 years ago to trigger the beginning of the end of the Third Reich and the preservation of Freedom and Liberty for all! Fantastic footage and an excellent tribute to the men and women who built them, the men and crew who flew them and especially the young men who leapt from them on that critically important day.

Great spectacle - alll 30 together ! A few years back we only had 12 C-47's for "Bridge too Far" movie....but one or two pilots were actually in the real battle, a P-51 pilot....still flying but more so many of the locals experiencing the horror. Very emotional it was. THIS SPECTACLE IS FABULOUS with faithfull DC-3's everywhete like my dog!

I read were 23, but still a huge number considering many of them flew from far away places. Very impressive.
Just to think that in the early hours of June 5, 1944 over 800 of them took of from airfields in the U.K.

its interesting how an american ww2 plane looks more at home with a french backdrop than when i see them at airshows flying in america!

The only thing that would have made this better is an actual jump from them in a recreation of the event. It would be phenomenal to see such an event in person!
I remember flying in DC3 over the Owen Stanley ranges in New Guinea, in thick cloud. The pilot said he couldn't get anymore altitude than 12,500 feet and hoped there were no peaks in that cloud. No radar, those were the days...
Above 10,000 feet the aircraft tends to "wallow". AND of course, oxygen masks normally required above that altitude..

You just reminded me of flying in a Dakota as a passenger. Never had a more uncomfortable flight until I was airlifted from Nepal to India lying between a couple of oxygen tanks.
I had a flight on one of those scheduled for tomorrow. It was scrubbed due to weather. Mother of All Disappointments. 😭😭😭
These planes are still flying today, some still in commercial service! A testament to the Douglas Aircraft Company.
Of my many jumps in the Marine Corps and Army aircraft, I wish I could have jumped this airplane!

Lovely to see these planes but why didn't any of the them have the RAF roundels on, as the british Dakota's were also on their way to Normandy too?
Without sound one can discern the absolute grace and beauty of these planes. They seem to leave the runaway as would a feather. And flying over geometric fields gives a sense of then England and the glorious mission long 75 years ago. Stunning.
PS Not even the vulgarian at video end could ruin the 2 minute moment that could last forever.

Great footage but someone cant count 30? 21 accurately 2 grounded due to engine faults at Duxford, 2 Mustangs 1 Miles & a Harvard.
you should have a look at Plane Savers DC-3 C-FDTD mothballed 27 years.
Moth-eaten, perhaps but not exactly mothballed. It was abandonded in 1989 and left derelict. It sat out in the weather near the perimeter of St. Hubert (YHU) for 29 years. During that time, it was stripped, vandalized, given multiple layers of graffiti, and many parts were stolen. The cockpit was gutted. Mikey McBryan in Yellowknife, NWT bought the derelict on Dec 27/28 2018 from an ad on EBay, having seen only some pictures. Day 1/Episode 01 of Plane Savers set out the project goal: to restore the aircraft, which had flown with 271 Sqdn RAF on June 5/6, 1944, and have it flying by June 6. 2019. Work commenced at YHU on April 11, 2019, with a workforce made up mostly of volunteers. The airframe was dismantled, and all parts were inspected, repaired or replaced if necessary. Most of the major systems were completely replaced. The Certificate of Airworthiness was issued by Transport Canada on May 30, 2019. She flew on June 6th with "Buffalo Joe" McBryan as pilot, Quinn Jones - formerly a pilot at Buffalo who now flies for Air Canada as co-pilot, and Ronnie McBryan as flight engineer. She;ll be at Oshkosh this summer, and I'm sure at several other air shows. The entire project took 155 days, with only 49 days of work for the actual restoration.
