When my brother was dying in a hospice they asked me if there was anything special they could do for him.
"Stick a monolith at the end of his bed," I replied. 2001was one of his favourite films and he would have died laughing.
Sadly they said it wouldn't be possible. And even more sadly he won't be joining me at the IMAX later this month.
My brother Rob, beyond the infinite but still in my thoughts.
Geffo Me- Your brother WILL be with you. God bless you both!
Thank you for your kindness Alec. I'm not a religious man but the universe is still a vast unknown and our consciousness an even greater mystery. Something which Kubrick so brilliantly expressed in 2001. Rob was kind and generous. Perhaps he has just moved on to better things.
in the infinite timelines of the monolith, there is one in which you had that monolith stuck there.
Well, I didn't expect to get a lump in my throat from a TH-cam comment. Thank you for that. +1
Who put onions in here!
There has been no other film as well crafted as this. I'm glad it's still being celebrated to this day.
Solaris
I Commando no
No what?
I don't think its beautiful, but I respect it and adore it for the fact that this was created in 1968 and has had such great impact on the evolution on cinema, that we cannot even fathom. I loved this film.
Also, regarding it being boring. In this age of faced paced-ness, where people need 'tl:dr' for every article, need shorter films and want to spend less time on everything, this film stands out as grandiose. This is not the average film which is bound by our useless constructs of 'time'. this is not the kind of film you watch with your girlfriend while binging popcorn. The title film belittles it. It is an EXPERIENCE. It calls upon the human race to take part in it, to be a part of this journey and to question our existence, and space-time constructs. This film basically spits on today's world, which wants everything to be fed to them, in small quantities. It shows the human race what it didn't deserve: 2001 A Space Odyssey.
This TH-cam trailer version is really ugly. You should see it in its restored form. It's actually a good looking movie even compared to todays films.
This movie looks like it was shot YESTERDAY! I can't wait to see this for the first time in IMAX! 😱😁

Vinayak Agarwal thanks to this movie we have Tom Cruise! This was his first cinema movie
Jim Cameron lmao there is nothing exceptional about Cruise.
No, it looks better than yesterday. It's not full of a bunch of unconvincing CGI crap.
Vinayak Agarwal nothing only the fact that he STILL is not only the biggest movie star in the world since TOP GUN but the only actor since the 80s, 32 years Cruise control
As a science fiction loving 12 year old, my parents took me to see this movie in 1968 when it opened. It was in "Cinerama" (a special wide-screen version). It blew my mind, ... for me it was a truly religious experience. Couldn't stop talking about it for months afterwards ... To this day my favorite movie ever ... I will make the effort to see this version (though many miles out of my way).
I can just imagine it being just a surreal unerving experience back then...
Did you ever watch back to the future
Cinerama was crazy. 3 booths, 6 projectors, all rotated 90 degrees. I can't imagine how wild it would have been to run a 70mm Cinerama film.
I was six years old when I saw it in 68, it expanded my perceptions of what the future could be.
If only my dad was still alive this was his favorite movie and now it is one of my faves too
Oh ! this is very sad.
The most dramatic theme music in Movie history
It was written in 1896, so it pre-dates the movie quite a bit but this version is definitely a cinematic icon.
WOOOOO!
Kubrick actually did commission an original score--then he threw it out in favor of the classical temp music.
Psycho.
Yup. Good ole Rickie-boy knew his stuff!
50% of the movie's dialogue is in this trailer
Not true
Gta? More like Gtgay! Whoosh
😁
There's more to fine cinema than, um, dialogue.
CurtisAmusements am I loosing my mind or was that an incredibly subtle spiderman 3 reference?
Saw it two nights ago at the large IMAX theater. Took our daughter for her first viewing of the movie. Including ourselves, there were perhaps only 20 people in the audience. So sad. But we got to sit in the best seats in the house. I've been waiting years and years for it to come to the theaters again. What an event! Be there.
It's too bad imax crops the sides of the frame
It usually plays every summer at the Paramount Theater in Austin .
@@michaeltrower741 lucky to be an american
I’m going tonight to see it in 70mm.. I’m pumped..
One Word: *MASTERPIECE*
Amogusus; inspired by 2001.
Im going to traumatize my kids with this imax screening
josh aguilar best coment on here and absolutley the best parenting in history
Haha
Parenting 101 for you all
Leo Can i be your son please?
@@leokatzzz ahh yes, Leo Leo Katz
My mom saw this movie when it first came out and it was her favourite movie of all time. When they showed it on TV they simulcast the soundtrack on one of the local FM stations, so my mom had our big stereo tuned into that FM station and the TV was on so we could get the full experience. It's a good memory and to this to this day 2001 is one of my favourite movies.
I had to read the novel to understand the plot-I saw it in the Theater in 1968 and my 12 year old brain could not fathom it. Kubrick was a genius.
The book isn’t based on the film or vice versa. Kubrick had Clarke write it under his supervision and only showed him a few things from the movie so Clarke had to make it up as he went along, that’s why the book and film are so different.
Clarke actually the film.
@@aidanlynn
Arthur C. Clarke wrote the story. Yes, they were both geniuses.
This aged so frickin well. True art is timeless
I will be seeing this film in IMAX if it's the last thing i do! I've seen it 3 times already and it's one of my favorite films of all time, but seeing it on an IMAX screen in a dark and quiet theater will surely give me a whole new prospective on this one of a kind masterpiece of cinema.
Samuel Black I've seen it over 30 times, the last time in a non IMAX and it was the most powerful experience for me, I don't know why.
It absolutely will. I saw it in Imax today and It was like seeing it for the first time all over again
This is my favorite movie!
Interestellar: #1 sci-fi movie
2001: #0
Because it is a classic that cannot be overcome
Stalker is leagues ahead of Interstellar come on
where is blade runner ????
@jdouglas8585 I discovered Stalker after Instersaller, and to me it's a more important sci fi film than Interstellar.
@jdouglas8585 Yeah ok but it's pretty much universally acknowledged that Stalker is one of the top 100 films of all time (look at any list over the years), while Interstellar isn't even Christopher Nolan's most acclaimed film (and he's not close to the level of Tarkovsky, but then again there's less than a handful of directors who came to his level). Please go watch Stalker.
@jdouglas8585 Why are you saying that, when I clearly said I discovered Stalker after Interstellar (so if anything I'm more nostalgic for Interstellar, which came out in my teens).Anyway, to each their own, but invoking nostalgia for the appreciation of a universally acclaimed masterpiece (not the messy, often laughable plot of Interstellar) isn't a legitimate argument.
A master piece ... !!!! This is not a movie ... this is a poem
So true!
Not just a poem. An epic, worthy of comparison with likes of divine comedy.
And dare I say, some of the best writing the legendary Arthur c. Clarke ever did.
@@KutluMizrak The novel is less interesting sadly
It's a religious movie.
Greatest film of all time.
It’s the greatest film of them all.. One day it will be appreciated as such..
Gonna see this masterpiece of film on IMAX the 23rd in all its beyond time & space glory with 4K Ultra HD 70 mm format! It's gonna epic seeing this for the first on the big screen even after 50 years later it's still a classic!
1:56 The best shot in all of film history.
I am amazed at how well this epic film has managed to stand the test of time to become one of the greatest motion picture master pieces in all of cinema history. It would be great to see this in an actual IMAX theater, and experience this World wide phenomenom.
Except that imax screens cropped the sides...
Movie from almost 60 years ago with great picture, color, artificial intelligence and flat screens.
Let’s start a petition to re-release this movie
I was lucky enough to see it at the AMC Loews Lincoln Square 13 in New York City, which is home to the largest IMAX screen in the east coast on August 25th, 2018. I decided to view this experience it as someone who was seeing it for the first time in 1968, and needless to say it was an experiences I will never forget.
I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid i can't do that.
Apolosa Cakau what are you talking about HAL?
That's what she said.
Wow and you got 88 likes for copying a movie line without context
How can you make this movie in 1968????
Stanley Kubrick beyond legendary work
I rewatched this at Cinerama in Seattle in 70mm, and it was the single most glorious cinematic experience of my life. The visuals were more astounding than ever before, but my god Jim the SOUND was unlike anything I have ever heard before; a true audiovisual treat. Is this IMAX release going to be better/worse/more-or-less-the-same?
I took my 10-year-old son to see this. He had never seen it before. When we got out of the theater, he said, "I either want to watch this movie every day for the rest of my life, or never again." I thought: he gets it.
A classic which teaches film making
Okay, where can I get that Vangelis style "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" track? (1:45)
Twice in 2018, 3 times in 2019. Tomorrow, i will see this for the sixth time in 70mm IMAX.
Always in awe watching this.
The pinnacle of filmmaking with Stanley Kubrick, an exceptional master filmmaker.
It's still a Masterpiece.
Just watched the 3D upconverted version of this on the Quest 3. It was beyond incredible.
Got my tickets! Greatest movie the has ever been made or possibly will.
I first saw this movie on a pretty large screen around ‘67 when I was 8 and I still remember it vividly. I’ve seen it at least 20 times since and I never grow tired of it. It’s hard to believe the Full Metal Jacket, Eyes Wide Shut, Clockwork Orange and Dr. Strangelove director also created this masterpice.
And…the shining
Saw this incredible movie in imax a few years ago...yes still mind blowing today...
My favorite movie of all time. Stanley is genius to make this movie in the 60s
OH, BOY!!!!! MY eyes are tearing up!
Ancient One that's what happened to me, I cried when I saw this trailer at the cinema !
YES 2001 times!
i hope they bring it here. this movie would be a spectacular imax experience
Truly a film that needs to be seen in theaters.
I thankfully had the luxury of finally seeing 2001: A Space Odyssey in the cinema once. Not IMAX though. It was an old cinema at the time that no longer exists. Yet the chance to see the Beyond The Infinite sequence on that cinema screen was still quite rewarding.
One of only three films to make me cry. And one film which should never, ever be seen on a small screen.
Them: Watch and enjoy newer movies.
Me: I'm sorry, I'm afraid I can't do that.
The movie: said in 2001 we'll have a huge space station, a fricking moon base, etc.
Meanwhile, irl 2021: WOO A FLYING POINTY CAN
You're assuming we don't. For all we know humans have had space stations for thousands of years, but keep it hidden from the majority.
@@SuperMuneera well we do know that's not true
Seeing this on Saturday! So excited. I have seen this movie literally dozens of times, and look forward every time to see it again
Have just found it’s currently playing in my city, Kyoto Japan. Really excited wow
The greatest movie I've ever seen.
Legendary Director Stanley Kubrick 💥💥💥
GLORIOUS Masterpiece ! !
🎥🎬👏
In Psalm 139:13, the verse "For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb." is written. In my personal interpretation, the scene at the end of this movie where a fetus is prominently depicted signifies the notion that all occurrences in this world are being observed by the divine.
Lucky enough to see a 70mm projection in 1978 as a special one week engagement. As I was 5 during initial release. Wonderful. Home video can't compare. I have heard that the color of the 4K is actually better than uncorrected print.
Well when you compare both cuts on trailer the unrestored is all yellow like the guy who preserved it smoked too many cigarettes lol
From 1:31 and on I got Godzilla vibes because those vocals were used in the 2014 movie and Clair De Lune was in the new trailer.
I find the video quality they’re were using in 1968 incredible
70 mm film, not video.
I WAS 13 WHEN I FIRST SAW THIS THANKS STANLEY AGAIN
A Beautiful Work Of Art.
watching this tomorrow night. soo excited
can't wait to see it tomorrow
Im definitely seeing this in theaters
Oh man! This version should be interesting. Though I wonder if the aspect ratio would be either changed or they could DMR it.
Lavon Media I’m pretty sure that’s not the case with older films as what’s scanned on the 70mm print would be translated directly. The big benefit being a 70mm print as this is the new restored version presented by Christopher Nolan.
古いどころか、これから現実に起こる未来の出来事のように思える。凄まじい映画を作ったものだ。
“I’m sorry Dave. I’m afraid I can’t do that.” is the most efficient among ALL AI movies.
man it was in 1968!!!!.so much ahead of its time
WARNING! Be advised this movie contains extremely loud noises and 70 mm screenings can have a strobe effect
It's an amazing experience and I hope everyone is able to enjoy it I just think people should be prepared for what they're getting into
This particular release isn't 70mm, just standard digital IMAX. That said, the loud noises are incredibly amplified here. The scene on the moon was so loud, and I saw people squirming in their seats because of it.
saw it in Cinerama 50 years ago..still the best movie ever!
Please show this in the UK! Seeing this in IMAX would be so incredible!
Holy cow, I have to watch this movie now
I'll be there! 2nd greatest movie EVER! Kubrick was KING!
whats the first?
It's fitting that 2001 should be screened in IMAX. Don't forget, the film was originally shown in Cinerama, one of the forerunners of IMAX.
Movie from almost 60 years ago with great picture, color, artificial intelligence and flat screens.
Best movie of all time
50 years old and still looks better than anything the Space Force will come up with.
I didn’t know the space force made movies
This trailer makes this movie look amazing.
JD Bond it is amazing
I concur, the full movie is totally amazing !
get to see it on real 70mm film tomorrow, its gonna be awesome!
I've read the book and I saw the movie ages ago, and I really like the Space Station aspect and all, but me personally (although I know the good the movie's done) I can't always grasp onto the same fervor others have for the movie. I'm not dissing it though, I still like it
まじかw imaxのカウントダウンでこの曲流れたら鳥肌
Best film ever
wow a true classic for IMAX. should be interesting
Love this film
Hope it comes to my country. I own it on home video but I'm really looking forward to take a friend of mine who has never seen it. Bet his reaction it's going to be priceless.
Amazing trailer!
I can't believe this movie was made in the 60s!
1:52 such space ship we can see in Dune, director Denis Villeneuve, big respect to him
Is it 70 mm IMAX?
A few IMAX theaters in North America will be showing it in that format.
Dr. Manhattan shouldn’t you be creating life in a distant planet not wanting to be involved in this planet?
No it's IMAX 4K, it was shown in 70mm at a number of cinemas worldwide a couple of months ago though, it looked fantastic, better than 4K.
IMAX 70mm is king. It has like an equivalent resolution of 18k. However if it's the newer IMAX laser projection system, it should also look great, with really good contrast and colors.
As far as I can tell it will be the 4K laser presentation, and I find even standard format 70mm to be better, though if you missed the 70mm in cinemas a few months ago, 4K will be the next best way to see it.
Being shown in Birmingham and Huntsville in Alabama and Memphis, Chattanooga, Nashville and Knoxville in Tennessee. In IMAX.
Goddamn this gave me goosebumps and the biggest fucking grin on my face. One of my favourite movies ever and one of the best sci-fi movies ever. Annoying they recommended the Nun Imax Trailer because that piece of trash is nowhere ever, fucking never ever going to be as good as this masterpiece.
The 2001: A Space Odyssey And E.T. World
I always thought this was amazing when I was little.
goddamn I love this movie
The end was a big mindfuck
Blu-Ray soon!
Bought my tickets! Giggidy.
Let's see...Big Square screen or the original huge wide wrap around screen how the film was originally released? It's a no-brainer answer. Unfortunately, the latter screen presentation is long gone. I saw this film in the Esquire cinema presented in one framed Cinerama in Sacramento when it showed finally showed up in June of 1968. To this day, no other film presentation could come close to the experience of the Cinerama wide screen! It's really odd, the Esquire cinema is still there downtown...same place...now converted to an IMAX theater. And guess what movie is showing in August? Sure, it's been 50 years, I'll give it a try.
Yes. YES!
This is the film that made me buy a laserdisc player.
I love my recommendations
I can't belive that was more than 50 years ago
Greattt. Is it going to released in Malaysia as well?
As usual I think we're out of luck if we aren't in the US
Singapore showed it and I saw it
これが1968年に作られた映画だってのが信じられない。
Just watched this movie today. Holy shit!
Be aware before buying that this will be presented in laser 4K projection, not 70mm IMAX, which was already given a limited engagement in select cities earlier this summer. Although 70mm IMAX is infinitely more breathtaking, the laser 4K remaster should still look great!
Stop being that guy, it's not "infinitely more breathtaking". Sure it's better, especially because of the lack of image cropping, but not a game changer.
Plus the yellow hue of unrestored was awful
