- You've probably heard of crack groups like CODEX, CPY, RELOADED or SKIDROW. Have you ever wondered who is behind those names? In this video, we do a little dive into the world of the Warez Scene, and explore how these groups operate in the vast underground network to crack games. The Warez Scene is a secretive society of "hackers" who break copyright protection, also known as DRM (Digital Rights Management) on all sorts of media. I'm focusing on games because it's the most interesting part of the Warez Scene, and gaming piracy is a frequent topic of discussion in the gaming world. There's a lot that happens before a game arrives to p2p (peer to peer) networks such as the Pirate Bay that most of us are familiar with, so I wanted to explore and explain that side of video game piracy.

Great video! I remember Skidrow the most during my Amiga youth. Loved the art and music that was compiled along with the crack. Even got involved with an Amiga group and created a demo, for what was called demo days back then.

Some scene members actually gained notoriety outside the scene as well. Tony "Strider" Krvaric, formerly of Fairlight, now serves as a Republican Party member after emigrating to the US. Shane Pitman used to be the top honcho over at Razor1911 but was jailed by the feds for his part in the operation; he later worked as a moderator over at Neowin.

I got into it heavy and ran rls groups. Also a courier . Spent 20 years then retired . Was my love for video games got me into it. I wanted to play games couldn't afford em. It was really interesting time could write a book on it. There were narqs.doxes.ddos attacks.fbi honey pots.l33t speak originated from the scene we hated p2p tried to shut them down. They brought heat in law enforcement to the scene. .
The DOJ did raids on servers who..these servers were in Banks and ISPs sysops used 1server for.buisness and hidden top sites ftp site for the release groups. Started with games then went to mp3 and divx. And console and scene grew..got to competive and to many busts . Killed it for alot of people got bored and left..scene still lives on but even harder to gain access to. You also need to have no life to be in it.
i find it fascinating that there is still a courier scene just like in the BBS days. and there are still up/download ratios in place. i would not be surprised if we are back to pirate BBS since the revival of the BBS scene but now via internet and not the phone lines.

They don't operate on the dark web, they release on topsites which I talk about in the video. They're private sites that you can't get access to.

i heard some guy in bulgaria was arrested for cracking games, even most famous in last 5 years empress also got in trouble, any info where are these people from? many rumors say most teams are from russia/china, but we dont have any real claims just after arrests. if anyone had more rumors about it please share.

My question is how do they get these releases in the first place?
From their supplier/courier
if they get it before official release, its leaked , probably by someone who had access to game developer files etc. But mostly games are bought by crack team themselves and then cracked.

Guys worked for software companies. Friends or friends..guys work at radio stations or reviewers and get early copies . People worked in department stores . I remember when worked at Walmart we had unrealeased games in the back. Weren't to he sold for another weak.. some people even worker in a cd or disk copying plant. You'd recruit these people thru encrypted emails . Or through a friend

tbh, pirating games is less criminal than the paywalls these games have in them. If I buy a game, I expect all the content of that game to be available to me. If it is hidden behind a paywall, then they are basically trying to steal from me is how I see it. If they put on the box\advertisement\whatever for the game "some content locked behind microtransactions" then fair enough, but they don't! Half of the shit you see in the trailer very often is not even in the game until you pay more money. I am fine with free to play games having microtransactions, thats not the problem. It is when you pay over £50 for a game, and then they expect you to pay more to get items that are needed to progress in the game or suffer very long wait periods (the old wait or pay tactic). Its unacceptable, and should be against the law imo. Imagine if we went back to sonic the hedgehog on the genesis, you reach the final zone and then it pops up "pay £20 to unlock this level, or wait 30 days". People would have went absolutely nuts, and they would have never got away with it. If they did it today however, they would get away with it....

fade was an still is one of the hardest to CRACK...its just unbeatable I'd played many do called fade fre arma releases but all but one by fairlight I think had it almost removed an in the end the developer just removed it. don't know why it wasn't used more as it was actually well done . you could play thinking it's all ok and bam your a seagull or can't shoot shit it get beamed from 3milesbeithvan ak on iron sights. annoying as fuck but you had to respect them.

That's was like 10 years ago topsites were approaching petabyte storage and 10gigabit was the norm. Go back to year 2000 was top sites were 100mbit to 300mbit with 20 users logging in leeching or trading
