I had a look back at my old Vin Ursa 100% ranged formation and to see how Kalix would fare in it (replacing Viconia which is no loss at all). It's got 6 non-standard species champions - but because every champion is a unique species - with his first specialisation it goes up to 16 stacks with 0 effort so it having a prestack is really nice. I'm thinking if the Oxventurers don't get another rework in the next 2 legendary dismantles - I might move back over permanently. (For anyone curious the formation is Vin Ursa as dps (even though she's not a dps) and Deekin / Solaak / Krux / Kalix / Shandie / Jang Sao / Astarion / Imoen / Zorbu as supports.)

This sounds insane, and possibly amazing too. I love Vin Ursa too and I occasionally went out of my way to give her as many FF stacks as possible, but it's always so frustrating due to the sheer randomness involved... I would never in a million years have thought of using her as a pseudo-DPS (does she scale well for that like a Penelope or a Hitch or is it just an extra challenge for yourself?). Since you're focusing on her and you know tons of nuances and interactions in general, I'd like to ask you: is the crit chance for her ultimate the same as her general crit chance? I've been using both of her feats to increase it but I've never noticed a real difference between 2.5% and 17.5%. If the ult's crit chance is separate, then I might be wasting those two feat slots? In any case, good luck have fun with that formation and just in general!
Mostly it was just an experiment to make a meme-team and see if it would work. The premise was simply build a 100% ranged team with Solaak and see if it would work. And since I really love Vin Ursa's design (and her Astral skin) - she became the dps of the formation for no other reason than that. The DPS role is overrated in my opinion. With enough legendaries of a high enough level - you can make literally any team clear maximum content (except maybe 2501 in Vecna). VU does at least buff herself which some non-dps champions don't do so she has that going for her. When she released - her critical chance feats absolutely did not change her ultimate critical chance. We reported it and they said they fixed it. I don't know if it's been confirmed that it has been fixed though.
I'd love the Ox crew to get a rework. It's them who got me into this game in the first place. I wonder if their new Campaign characters may turn up at some point

I imagine by now you have most meta formations so strong that there's no real challenge or much fun using them, so you explore other routes, which makes sense. Good to know for Vin Ursa's crit feats, thank you. I've made a couple of runs just a couple days ago where I really tried long and hard to get an ult crit from her, even with both feats equipped and camping at an area with only enemy types she hasn't collected yet, and it still took ages more often than not. So given the context I strongly suspect their fix doesn't really hold, or the bug came back since then. I'd agree with you on any formation one throws enough investment at being good enough if the game's offline mode was close enough to active online mode to at least allow some farm offline. I'd gladly take even a hundredth of the gem farming routinely achieved by those with a very powerful PC that can safely run the game 24/7 or even overnight without overheating or crashing. Unfortunately as things currently are, I really can't afford to do any serious amount of gem farming so I get my ilevels, feats and other sources of power very slowly. I know this doesn't apply to legendaries directly, since everyone gets roughly the same amount of scales at the same rate once settled at exhalted legend. But it does mean that I have to really focus on a couple of champs at a time, for months on end, to get them at a decent power level from everything else. So I would be shooting myself in the foot if I did that for weak champions. Or if used my precious scales on champions with a very low ilevel, not all their key feats etc. On top of that, the discrepancies from one DPS and team to another can be really huge, at least in my experience, even within what's generally rated high and considered meta. I mean, I've been trying really hard to push my AA team to take off, and my Durge has three times the ilevels and legendary levels that my Kas does (and better ones too as I've made several rerolls for Durge). And yet... A Kas team is so easy to build compared to an AA one (as long as it's available) and Kas is so much stronger than Durge that I'm easily reaching e50 more damage with Kas than with AA. Plus the three members the two teams share and that I've been investing in with AA in mind all perform infinitely better with my lowly Kas than with my beefed up Durge. So in my situation, whatever happens to be the most reliably strong is my best option to progress. I can have fun with my meme team of Jaheira plus gold finders and cap at e400 damage, or I can try super hard with my Durge plus AA team and beat that by e75 to e100... Or I can quickly set up my basic and straightforward Kas' Evil Dead team and effortlessly reach e550 or more. So... When I really want to get the job done, I don't really have much of a choice. If/when I can invest in a faster and cooler computer, the game's world will be my oyster. But for now, I have to make do with tiny increments at a snail's pace. ^^

I've been procrastinating on the game in general lately, and I've been meaning to finally use the BDS and get some Strahd variants done for ages, so my first pick this event is Fen (who has been alone in a background party forever and has like 1 epic and 10 ilevels to her name). But even in that context, I'm reluctant to pick Uriah Heep next week. He does give a +1 BDS and a small buff to Nahara, but he's not even evil himself and really weak. Some might say piss poor. ^^ Other than that, my opinion on the bug is that he'll replace Nahara and/or Strongheart in one of my background party loops forever more once I complete his event. I might even start considering throwing some of the Saturday Morning Scavengers in there eventually, especially if I finally push myself to do Strahd variants actively. I'll have to check which ones work offline for me, first, since those calculations are still a buggy mess. And I could use a handful more familiars too! I have 28 which is just okay: 3x3 for background parties so I still have 19 to work with for my active run, but especially with Wyll I could definitely use more. In most situations, 16 is reasonable enough, so I could still add 2 or 3 scavengers in the background. But for Folk Hero, ideally I'd like to go all the way to 33 or 34 in the active party alone, so there's still a long way to go. (I've noticed recently you can put familiars in the Potions menu, apparently. I'm afraid to even try it, though, it sounds like a noob trap that would throw away my stashes for no good reason, so I'll still use 33 as the maximum number of familiars that can safely be used). Looking back at her pics right now, especially the console portrait, I can see her elusive face is actually just some kind of camouflage style makeup over what looks to me like a very normal human face. She doesn't look particularly tall either compared to other champs on the field. I know they can't get really accurate with proportions or some champs like gnomes or halflings would appear as a dot and a goliath or dragonborn would be much larger than a single hexagon on the grid, but still. She basically looks like a regular human, her disguise and pet aside. Is that what goliaths are supposed to look like in D&D in general? I'm not too familiar with the lore and with a term as widely used I would have expected giants, basically. Anyway, it seems clear the list means "standard" in a lore sense or another D&D reference I'm lacking, but not in the practical sense of "common in the game". Looking a bit closer, I see several species for which we have 3 or more champs already available (plus glitch feats too) but don't count as "standard", like Aarakocra, Kobold, Genassi, Gith-sth... Potentially even Drows and the various sub-types of Elves too, if each tag is counted separately? Yet the zero Orc and the lonely Goliath count as standard. I guess we'll just have to get used to it over time (after all the groups for Ash's bonds can feel just as random at first glance).
Goliaths are typically represented as big muscular humanoids (like 8 feet tall) and tend to have a tribalistic design. Very common race for Barbarians in my experience. In my stream today people were saying that those "Standard" races extend from the current shift of DnD 5e going to 2024 rules which keeps a lot of the foundation the same, but changes a lot too. So, they're saying it that way to coincide with current DnD trends.

With Hew Maan's new Misdirection feat (currently in premium exclusive) you'd be able to make a 4 tank formation into a 1 tank formation. Though I'm not aware of any 4 tank formations currently in the game off the top of my head.
Kalix will get a huge buff, when Valentine is no longer Elminster compatible. September is his time to shine. Actually thinking about it I think it might be a really good idea to add this to your videos... What if you were to talk about the champions that fall off of eleminster From now until the next event. Desmond on February 21st and Tatiana in March 7th. And then next month is just gazarik unless there is an evergreen falling off which there is blooshi at March 22nd. I mean might as well might as well.
Nice to have another off-tank and nightmare bug monsters have historically been underrepresented in this game, so that's 2 checkmarks right there. Having more evil champions available for Elminster is good, too. Valentine will age out of Elminster this year and blow a big hole into a lot of patron variant formations, so mitigating that would be good planning. Cool champion, useful demos, should work well with Ishi when she comes out next week. I feel like it would be better not to doom your new champion to background jail 99% of the time, though.
Im going Karlach, Hew Mann, and Presto. I'm investing in SMS with the hopes that new characters in it will be broken. Then everyone will be using Presto, and I can say I got ilevels before he was cool.
I'm grabbing Paultin to free up my makos (88% trials paul) plus of the gets a rework i can move it all to krull, Birdsong becausei hope to run a tabaxi wyll group one day, and Karlach for sweet sweet event buffs.
Also I couldn't pass up on Demilich Hew Maan so... Might grab K'thriss and hope for a rework. I doubt Havilar will get reworked for a while due to Mehen Rework.
I still am hoping for the next time they do a double rework we have Havilar and Farideh together. It's true we're getting a lot of people falling off Elminster, for sure. It's going to be a sad day when the AA stacks getting knocked out.
There are so many useful champions this event (Karlach, Hewmann, Birdsong, Presto, Fen) that are either just good, unique, or helpful for formations, but kithriss was the only one I didn't have... so I'm using one of my slots on him...
Interesting design. I would say "fun" without hesitation if there was something more than just a passive buff out of Kalix in the background party. Maybe some kind of telepathically transmitted ultimate, that also spawned his fav foes? Just brainstorming here. I'd like him (on paper at least) more if his influence from the background could be actually seen, and not relegated to just a buff. So that there was actual gameplay involved. 😜
anybody else has the problem that even tho humans increase stacks of "unorthodoxe alliances" when picking "strength in numbers", but it gives no additional damage? seems like a bug, but the wording of those abilities is so bad i dont know if the stack increase or missing dmg increase is the bug....
@@tyredack yeah definetly, and the values of "unorthodox alliances" and "mindlink" get increased. its the dps at the the top of the screen that stays the same.
Oh, there are plenty that need a rework. Let's see who needs it the most... Deekin, K'thriss, Donaar, Talin, Binwin, Brig, Nahara, Paultin, Xander, Prudence, Farideh, Gazrick, Vlahnya, Walnut, Corazon, Morgaen, Lazaapz, Brother Uriah, Yorven, Orisha... and there's more, but they could use it the most I'd think.
Even if they are not exactly made to be played together, Ishi is still a non standard race as a kobold, so she would qualify for unorthodox allies. So there is some synergy at least. And if they keep the non human stuff from Ishi, Kalix will also qualify for that.
So… K’thriss and Paultin are the two worst choices for flex? Pity they are the only ones I don’t already have then 😂 they’ll be my first two picks for that reason. Just need to decide on a third… I haven’t picked up Kalix yet, as the Paultin adventure formation is better for me to push and up my favour first. But he sounds decent enough. I’ll definitely be using him somewhere, the only question is where exactly.
Unfortunately. K'thriss just has that early Champion jank, and Paultin had some use for when Jarlaxle was used up in Trials you could fall back on his gold find. Now with all the gold finders being reworked/added in that seat it's become moot. They both need a rework. He's an interesting one, and if you can't find a place for him at least you can slap him in the background.
@ yeah, pretty much all the champions I have left to get fall into that problem of pretty much being useless. Problem with starting the game so late is I still gotta get them though. I’ll be glad when it’s done and I can focus on boosting the ones that are actually useful.
Kthris has 1 redeeming quality. He helps to stack spawns on variance where click damages are disabled. Lol @@tyredack waiting for that rework for those two.
That pretty much boils down to Kalix (Buffing), the entire Saturday Morning Squad (Collections), Fen (Patron Challenges), and Strongheart (Event Currency) The rest of the farming style champs don’t work in background parties

Honesty to me, Kalix doesn’t deserve an A rank. His buff does have a high ceiling in the perfect comp, but it’s so extremely restrictive to get it there. Currently in every formation I’ve used him in, his buff is garbage. I feel like if he’s going to be that restrictive, he should be bumped down a tier. The background buffing is nice to get 2-5 more zones of pushing though!
He can be placed in a lot of formation and perform well, but he is for sure restrictive. Being able to still be useful even if you don't actually actively use him is what pushed him up for me.
@@tyredack that’s fair! I personally wish his background ability was a little stronger. Only 2-5 zones of active party pushing isn’t too terribly impactful. But I also understand that they couldn’t make it too crazy because of the iLevel demons who go crazy with blacksmith contracts lol

One nice thing is you can turn a 3 tank formation into a 1 tank with Gale/Turiel and Kalix.
It's true! Can be useful for some situations to have Briv or Karlach simply needing to heal themselves.
With Hew Maan's new Misdirection feat (currently in premium exclusive) you'd be able to make a 4 tank formation into a 1 tank formation. Though I'm not aware of any 4 tank formations currently in the game off the top of my head.
Kalix will get a huge buff, when Valentine is no longer Elminster compatible. September is his time to shine.
Actually thinking about it I think it might be a really good idea to add this to your videos... What if you were to talk about the champions that fall off of eleminster From now until the next event.
Desmond on February 21st and Tatiana in March 7th.

Nice to have another off-tank and nightmare bug monsters have historically been underrepresented in this game, so that's 2 checkmarks right there. Having more evil champions available for Elminster is good, too. Valentine will age out of Elminster this year and blow a big hole into a lot of patron variant formations, so mitigating that would be good planning. Cool champion, useful demos, should work well with Ishi when she comes out next week. I feel like it would be better not to doom your new champion to background jail 99% of the time, though.
That's fair honestly. I like the introduction of the mechanic, but that is a funny way to take a new Champion for sure. I do like the bug boi tho!
Im going Karlach, Hew Mann, and Presto. I'm investing in SMS with the hopes that new characters in it will be broken. Then everyone will be using Presto, and I can say I got ilevels before he was cool.
I'm grabbing Paultin to free up my makos (88% trials paul) plus of the gets a rework i can move it all to krull, Birdsong becausei hope to run a tabaxi wyll group one day, and Karlach for sweet sweet event buffs.
Also I couldn't pass up on Demilich Hew Maan so... Might grab K'thriss and hope for a rework.
I doubt Havilar will get reworked for a while due to Mehen Rework.
I still am hoping for the next time they do a double rework we have Havilar and Farideh together.
It's true we're getting a lot of people falling off Elminster, for sure. It's going to be a sad day when the AA stacks getting knocked out.
There are so many useful champions this event (Karlach, Hewmann, Birdsong, Presto, Fen) that are either just good, unique, or helpful for formations, but kithriss was the only one I didn't have... so I'm using one of my slots on him...

Interesting design. I would say "fun" without hesitation if there was something more than just a passive buff out of Kalix in the background party. Maybe some kind of telepathically transmitted ultimate, that also spawned his fav foes? Just brainstorming here. I'd like him (on paper at least) more if his influence from the background could be actually seen, and not relegated to just a buff. So that there was actual gameplay involved. 😜
I feel like he could be the start of seeing that mechanic used in interesting ways. Hoping so anyway.
@tyredack Yeah, maybe this is considered a test internally whether inter-formation interactions could be viable long-term.

I tried swapping valentine for Kalix and it was about an e60 loss. And I'm running practically the exact same kas formation as you, what am I missing?
You probably have legendaries on your Valentine and not on Kalix I'm assuming?

anybody else has the problem that even tho humans increase stacks of "unorthodoxe alliances" when picking "strength in numbers", but it gives no additional damage?
seems like a bug, but the wording of those abilities is so bad i dont know if the stack increase or missing dmg increase is the bug....
In this case are Humans *for sure* the most populated race in your formation at the time? It only picks the most represented race.
@@tyredack yeah definetly, and the values of "unorthodox alliances" and "mindlink" get increased. its the dps at the the top of the screen that stays the same.
That can be wonky tbh. It's best to check your BUD more than anything when determining if you're getting an increase in damage.

Oh, there are plenty that need a rework. Let's see who needs it the most...
Deekin, K'thriss, Donaar, Talin, Binwin, Brig, Nahara, Paultin, Xander, Prudence, Farideh, Gazrick, Vlahnya, Walnut, Corazon, Morgaen, Lazaapz, Brother Uriah, Yorven, Orisha... and there's more, but they could use it the most I'd think.
Do you think Ishi’s rework will correlate with Halix?
I don't think they will be built specifically for each other, but maybe there will be some overlap!
Even if they are not exactly made to be played together, Ishi is still a non standard race as a kobold, so she would qualify for unorthodox allies. So there is some synergy at least. And if they keep the non human stuff from Ishi, Kalix will also qualify for that.
So… K’thriss and Paultin are the two worst choices for flex?
Pity they are the only ones I don’t already have then 😂 they’ll be my first two picks for that reason. Just need to decide on a third…
I haven’t picked up Kalix yet, as the Paultin adventure formation is better for me to push and up my favour first. But he sounds decent enough. I’ll definitely be using him somewhere, the only question is where exactly.
Unfortunately. K'thriss just has that early Champion jank, and Paultin had some use for when Jarlaxle was used up in Trials you could fall back on his gold find. Now with all the gold finders being reworked/added in that seat it's become moot. They both need a rework.
He's an interesting one, and if you can't find a place for him at least you can slap him in the background.
@ yeah, pretty much all the champions I have left to get fall into that problem of pretty much being useless. Problem with starting the game so late is I still gotta get them though. I’ll be glad when it’s done and I can focus on boosting the ones that are actually useful.
Kthris has 1 redeeming quality. He helps to stack spawns on variance where click damages are disabled. Lol @@tyredack waiting for that rework for those two.

You should do a video on all the champions you should have in a background party any why.
That pretty much boils down to Kalix (Buffing), the entire Saturday Morning Squad (Collections), Fen (Patron Challenges), and Strongheart (Event Currency)
The rest of the farming style champs don’t work in background parties
@Titon931 Exactly what @popington4674 said. Other than you should be using Diana in your speed team already anyway if you're farming gems.

Honesty to me, Kalix doesn’t deserve an A rank.
His buff does have a high ceiling in the perfect comp, but it’s so extremely restrictive to get it there. Currently in every formation I’ve used him in, his buff is garbage. I feel like if he’s going to be that restrictive, he should be bumped down a tier. The background buffing is nice to get 2-5 more zones of pushing though!
He can be placed in a lot of formation and perform well, but he is for sure restrictive. Being able to still be useful even if you don't actually actively use him is what pushed him up for me.
@@tyredack that’s fair! I personally wish his background ability was a little stronger. Only 2-5 zones of active party pushing isn’t too terribly impactful. But I also understand that they couldn’t make it too crazy because of the iLevel demons who go crazy with blacksmith contracts lol

@frankenfrank9553 Scripting with a proper formation makes all the difference. If you take that dive, check the pins in the scripting channel of IC's discord. They have it well set up there for getting you started.
