16 Auspicious Symbol Double Ikkat Saree by Gajam Anjaiah. (Took about a year to manufacture the Saree)
    Description of the Saree:
The Telia Rumal technique is a traditional weaving technique, which started in 18th century in Andhra Pradesh. I introduced this into IKAT Sarees. In pursuit of searching for new designs to experiment with, I have come across Sixteen Lucky Symbols depicted in the literature of Jainism, and I thought of converting all those 16 Lucky Symbols in to IKAT saree based on Telia Rumal Technique. Each Symbol in it carries a special effect. The idea behind using the Symbols in saree is to bring Religious Significance to the saree, which can be worn during important festivals and auspicious occasions. The meaning attached to each Symbol is an auspicious one.
The legend behind the Auspicious Symbols and its significance, based on which these are taken in the saree are as follows:
As per the Jain literature at suitable intervals Fourteen Kalakars were born. The Fourteen Patriarchs guided the people in the correct method of severing the umbilical cord at the time of birth. Thus he came to be known as Kalkara Nabhi or Nabhiraj. Nabhi and his wife Marudevi were destined to be the parents of the first Tirthankara, Rishabha. During the period of conception as Marudevi lay asleep on her couch, there came to her sixteen auspicious dreams. In her dreams she saw,
    1) An elephant with ICHOR streaming from its temple.
    2) A splendid bull, white as the white lotus.
    3) A lion that glowed like the luminous moon.
    4) The illustration of Goddess Lakshmi.
    5) A pair of fragrant flower -- garlands, surrounded by bees. 6) The full moon encircled by stars.
    7) The piercing rays of rising sun.
    8) The golden vases covered with water lilies.
    9) Two fish shaped like Marudevi's Eyes.
    10) A lake yellowed by lotus pollen.
    11) The ocean splashing angrily against the restraining shore.
    12) A high throne of sparkling gems.
    13) A heavenly carriage studded with pearls and precious stones.
    14) A mansion from the nether world.
    15) A heap of jewels illuminating the very firmament.
    16) A bright smokeless fire.
Then in the next day morning Marudevi narrated about the Sixteen Symbols appeared in her dream to Nabhi and wanted to know the meaning of each symbols. Nabhi explained her that elephant signified the impending birth of a son of unsurpassed his excellence, the bull indicated that the son would tower over others, the lion meant he would possess immense strength, the garlands indicated that he would conduct a religious order, the lustration of Lakshmi symbolized their son's lustration to Mount Meru, the moon meant that he would be infinite source of joy, the sun signified that he would be brilliant, the two jars were symbols of countless good qualities, the fish meant that he would be happy, the lotus lake meant that his body would bear auspicious signs, the sea indicated that he would become lord of earth, the throne meant that he would reign on earth, the celestial carriage indicated that he would descend from the heavens, the naga vimana from the nether world meant that he would clairvoyant, the heap of jewels meant that he would be virtuous, the smokeless fire indicated that he would reduce all his previous karma to ashes.
Double IKAT yarn Tie and Dye designs are used to get the solid colored pattern, using traditional colour combination of Alizarine Red and Rusted Iron Black and little quality of natural off white is left. Cotton yarn is soaked for few hours in burnt ashes of castor seedpods, goat-dung power and sesame oil and dried overnight. Next day again the same process and it is done for 15 days. It is a process of pre-treatment before colour dyeing and the oil used as a colour-fixing agent. The finished cloth has a strong oil smell.
In today's world of hectic and fast life, the religious symbols occupy an important place and it is presumed that a lady wearing a saree with all 16 auspicious signs will have mental peace and happy life. The purpose of choosing all 16 auspicious signs is to make the saree religiously significant. The meaning of each symbol in the saree is significant in all respects in today's point of view. Hence, the symbols have been carefully chosen, planned and executed the weaving of this saree.
