Every time this competition is held comments are made about this very low-key method of announcing the prizewinners. In this case many of the competitors didn't even understand what was being said. It seems to be more like a school talent quest rather one of the world's most prestigious piano competitions.
It's tradition, the last part is always a kind of a spontaneous mess, and informal:) They always stand on the stairs, and it's simple and not a big do:) That comes the day after, the gala concert featuring the winners. It may seem strange, but it's been like this for years:) Also, they couldn't just use the concert hall for the announcement, because it's never certain when the results will come in, so there are no tickets sold to this part of the competition. Announcing the results in an almost empty (even including the media) philharmonic hall would look ridiculous:)
It's great that people maintain tradition in some places. Otherwise, the candidates might as well compete via TikTok, and receive the results via WhatsApp... in their bathroom.

This is just embarrassing. As a Pole i was a bit cringing. How can we ignore the multicultural character of this competition and announce the results in polish with bad pronunciation without help of this translator guy. This is one of the biggest musical events and the confusion among participants makes organization look just ridiculous! I hope the reason to speak polish is not 'we are in Poland and Chopin was polish' agenda but more like the Chef of Everything doesn't speak english good enough. Maybr next time this important moment will not look like school corridor announcement.
This competition is held once every 5 years and I am sure they can easily find an interpreter for announcing the results in English, which lasted only a few moments.
"Because this is an international community, please use English" Chopin Institute kept saying in the chat, and we freaking used English. And what about this? What the hell about this???
The translator is there, the guy with glasses. We saw him for 3 weeks, still didn't recognize? Email him and not the Chopin Instytut. Btw i understood everything. The announcer clearly said "ex aequo/with". Maybe you should pay more attention. Ps learning other languages than english is also useful

I'm so happy about the results, I hope this will inspire more people in Italy to study the piano. This is an historical achievement for Italy in the Chopin competition!
The reason he hasn't been much mentioned is that he simply didn't live up to expectation at the finals. Personally, I find it very odd that he took the 2nd prize anyway even with that butchered concerto--as if performance at the finals didn't matter after all.
@@danjo7856 Gadjiev certainly made some clunkers in that concerto--no doubt, but what's worse, missing the boat lyrically as Bruce did in that second movement or ---hitting a few wrong notes but your interpretation is illuminating and jaw-droppingly beautiful. Besides this poorly handled announcement, I also get frustrated that Chopin competition arranged many video clips and live interview sections and tried to curate fruitful content but they didn’t have a translator around to assist the pianists who don’t speak English. It’s so unthoughtful to assume everyone can speak English.
Exactly! For an event so popular in the Far East, there's really no excuse for not having a few interpreters. Nobody should have to rely on the help of a fellow competitor to understand and answer questions (as some of the finalists unfortunately had).
@Diana Tuova so fucking true. When i was watching the interview, it was painful. The interviewers cant even keep up the pace, they are literally all over the place and let the participants talk whatever. Hao Rao was also skipped a few times, and Bruce, wtf the winner, had to translate his questions. Where is a fucking translator? jesis christ. not everyone can speak English. A disgrace to chopin, to the competitors. They are also tired in the interview too. give them a break?
It is only right and fair to add that obviously apart from this abysmal ending proceedure, the Institute have done everything else brilliantly. It's just bizarre that they could get this soo wrong!
It is kind if crude to line up all the contestants there. The ones who didn’t make it had to keep a brave face while the winners grinned from ear to ear. Poor Hao Rao standing there haplessly. Shouldn’t it be a more human way to announce the results? After all this is more than Miss America beauty contest?
What a poor ending to such an incredible competition of international interest. It was like presenting the prizes on the run. Every local, third class competition, in music, sports or what ever, presents the prizes with more heart, passion, appreciation and honoring of the participants and more festiv. What an embarrassing appearance by the jury, which claims to judge passionate piano playing and presents itself so completely dispassionately - it's a shame!
It's tradition, it has been done this way forever:) On the stairs, with bad English, if any, messy, spontaneous, late at night. And you don't mess with tradition:) For glamour, pomp&circumstance check out the winners' gala concerts, they start tonight:)

I am surprised that certain jurors with students participating in this competition were allowed to judge. Even though they are not allowed to vote their own students, there is still the possibility of manipulation in all sorts of ways - CONFLICT OF INTEREST is apparent and I am just thinking about UNBIAS and FAIRNESS to ALL competitors. They should have recused themselves as jurors for this competition.
I thought about this too. Yes, definitely conflict of interest exists, even though they are not allowed to vote their students. There is always smart ways to manipulate ... once conflict of interest is allowed.
I absolutely agree with you. I think there are too many jurors. Jurors whose students are competitors besides, should not be in the panel at all…..regarding languages, they should have 2 interpreters( that is easy).. Take care.

What happened the the modern Latin (English) for the international community? I don't mind the informal setting, but if they are going to announce the results then they should at least have English interpretation after each sentence. I mean there was that man standing next to the Director of the Competition and he did translate a little bit in the beginning about 8 awards and JJ won something, but he then kind of quit translating after that. It's very confusing to hear the names but not sure exactly what prize they have won because it was all spoken in Polish. It took me a while to figure out that Sorita and Gajiev shared the second prize. And I totally missed the fourth prize was shared between Aimi and Jakub. The only thing I was kind of sure was Bruce appeared to have won first prize and that JJ to my happy surprise won something probably the sixth prize. I meant it's not just the people around the world watching who were confused by the announcement in Polish, Sorita looked like he wasn't sure either when his name was called and had to double check with Jakub Kuzlik. Well, it was memorable that's for sure 😂😂
Plus we were forced to wait 3 hours for this entirely "shitty" announcement. I'm resentful of my time being wasted in such a manner. Maybe all the jokes about Pols are correct.
I think the fuss over English in the chat was because they wanted to stress the international character of the competition and make sure most people could understand. However, when announcing the winners, they wanted to stress the importance of Chopin’s polish side. Whether we like it or not, everyone feels quite rightly proud of their own language and nationality, in my view.

Congratulations to those who participated in this Theatrical show. We see that once more, Mr. DANG's Student is the winneer... much like last time in 2015 when his 3 (YES THREE) students were the winners... No conflict of interest there... So now that we all see with our EYE and hear with our EARS that this is not a competition at all, but simply a spring board theater for Mr. Dang's Students, I would like to assure all the participants that there is no shame in being eliminated nor any real value to the trophy... You have all been Wonderful and GREAT pianists, and WE THE AUDIENCE KNOW what we now know... That being said, the winner, although a student of "Mr. Dang and co.", Is also a very Great Pianist indeed and I congratulate him personally for his performance which was in fact Outstanding and yes I do admit that he is very deserving of the prize nonetheless. But that is not to say that all the others were NOT !! Several were ABSOLUTELY deserving of th same. If Mr. Dang wants us to believe his students are actually the real winners of a competition, I suggest he refrain from being a judge in this and any competition. His influence within the Chopin Institute itself is much too great for us to exonerate him from rigging the outcomee to his advantage. His students are Very Good, and if they can win, they will win without him being in among the judges. I am not accusing anyone here, but the situation is SHOUTING out loud that such a biased rigging is taking place simply by these facts alone! If you were a participant in the competition and you did not make the finals, think nothing of it... you did not LOSE anything... and you are still a GREAT PIANIST!!! I asure you of this! You do realize the scores are up on the internet, and Dang Thai Son scored contestants quite similarly to his peers. Even if he were to discriminate the contestants that are not his students, it would not work because there are many jury members in total and his opinion would inevitably be diluted. @@DavidLee-ik8dd That may be your opinion, as for several others who do not have access to the insider realm as well, however Dang used his influence; (him being verry connected to and with the competition administration), along with several other judges who had a stake in the outcome, to flip the scores and cause the selection of winners according to their rigging. If we liken this to criminality, it is easier to comprehend... In high level Financial crime, all players will swear to their legitimacy because they are Gaining from the fraud. The losers are the victims and the fraudsters walk away with the prize (unsuspected of the crime). They always have a hidden truth unknown to the public. We see this among politicians who get into politics and become multi millionaires after just a few years through insider tading... which is a crime, but they walk away free of any accountability because their successive replacements do the same crimes and hold the power to continue supressing and hiding the truth. Maybe it is not worth further discussion but it irritates me that polish again did something ashamed. The final gala was not send live and it was fine with polish first then translation.
They are rivals to each other, but before that they were companions who walked the piano path.
So sorry for Hyuk Lee :(
This is just embarrassing.
Well said.
Thank you for your intelligent comment
I hope the tradition is in honour of Chopin. He deserves it for as long as the piano is played.
I actually think it's pretty cool that they announce everything in Polish. Let's be proud of our nations and our languages.
This competition is held once every 5 years and I am sure they can easily find an interpreter for announcing the results in English, which lasted only a few moments.
Brawo dla wszystkich
"Because this is an international community, please use English" Chopin Institute kept saying in the chat, and we freaking used English. And what about this?
What the hell about this???
It is tradition 😎
@Diana Tuova bullshit, get used to it, it's their country (like my house) and it's their "lingua franca"
Gadjiev also should have received the prize for most underrated finalist by the online community.
Congratulations to my compatriot!!!
He was also awarded a prize for the best rendition of a sonata:)
@@lucycrown212 Yes, my point is that everybody was talking about Bruce, Sorita, Sumino, Aimi, Eva while Gadjiev (as well as Armellini who finished 5th) received very little attention.
Gadjiev was brilliant in all the other stages of the competition to make the concerto less of an issue. Bruce has fabulous qualities, but I think it's harder to play slow passages well.
@@bettyjanesurabian8237 I absolutely agree .No one will get a first place in any competition after starting the concerto with a major text slip .UNBELIVABLE ...
I love the low key atmosphere . Thanks!
Time to start learning polish! Why people things english is better than other nations?
@Diana Tuova contest was in Poland so they should pay respect and lear at list basic words in polish
@Diana Tuova if they are so talented they should learn basic worlds effortless
It is only right and fair to add that obviously apart from this abysmal ending proceedure, the Institute have done everything else brilliantly. It's just bizarre that they could get this soo wrong!
It is kind if crude to line up all the contestants there.
The ones who didn’t make it had to keep a brave face while the winners grinned from ear to ear. Poor Hao Rao standing there haplessly. Shouldn’t it be a more human way to announce the results? After all this is more than Miss America beauty contest?
Every competitor gave a beautiful performance, congratulations to the winners.
Armellini is a ray of sunshine
A worthy winner but for the level of prestige the announcement was rather confusing. Almost an afterthought on the steps of a palace. Very strange.
No Price for Pacholec? How can that be? I am relatively disappointed with the jury‘s decision.
Some of the winners had their piano teacher on the jury panel, to say the least. Surprised?

What a poor ending to such an incredible competition of international interest. It was like presenting the prizes on the run. Every local, third class competition, in music, sports or what ever, presents the prizes with more heart, passion, appreciation and honoring of the participants and more festiv. What an embarrassing appearance by the jury, which claims to judge passionate piano playing and presents itself so completely dispassionately - it's a shame!
this is only announcement, it has been always like this, the gala is in the evening

Good thing that the competition releases all the results publicly, so you will know how many points each jury member gave to each contestant.

As I don't speak Polish, I understood only who was first, second and third. What were the other prizes and what for?
Sorita's reaction was funny LOL

I think the fuss over English in the chat was because they wanted to stress the international character of the competition and make sure most people could understand. However, when announcing the winners, they wanted to stress the importance of Chopin’s polish side.
Much Love to you all and thankyou to all of you wonderful Pianists who gave us of yourselves so generously! May the Gods Bless each and every one of you,
And that's just the very tip of an iceberg.

Do you have any evidence in support of your accusations? If not, your behavior is nothing more than dishonorable blabber-mouthing. You think someone else deserved first prize? Well, get on the jury next time and vote on it. I don’t know how much you know about pianism (incidentally, I’ve been playing the piano since 1965 - you must be a ninety-something then, Grandpa), but the official results are perfectly credible given the performance of the various participants. The general level of the competition was unusually high this time and just because someone played well enough to win last time doesn’t necessarily mean he/she was the one to get the highest number of points this time around. While the competition does not form the essence of my existence, I happen to live in Warsaw, I know some of the people involved (incidentally, my personal favorite, Ms Kobayashi, didn’t win First Prize either) and I do follow the event closely every 5 years.

Do you know How many examiner in this competition? Only Mr Dang can not do more, let understand this, thanks
I can't agree more ! It is more then obvious...such a shame !
Dang was not even allowed to score his students in this competition!
You do realize the scores are up on the internet, and Dang Thai Son scored contestants quite similarly to his peers. Even if he were to discriminate the contestants that are not his students, it would not work because there are many jury members in total and his opinion would inevitably be diluted. I also believe that Dang Thai Son has good intentions personally. He fairly scored other contestants, and he gives off a generally genuine vibe in his interviews.
The perception you pointedly have of his innocence in the matter is precisely what gives him the advantage of "credibility". There's a much deeper and obscure reality lurking under the surface. It's all based on the investments of MONEY... NEVER True justice.
