  • The Winter Solstice is truly part of natures magic. The Sun has now made its furthest South position and begins its journey back to the Summer Sun!
    Our ancient ancestors created monuments all over the country to celerate this remarkable time of year, the Clava Cairns are some of the most spectacular examples of these ancient structures. Dating back 4000 years!
    I hope you enjoy my video!

    Lovely stuff. These chambers are always more about rebirth than death. A child would take the name of an ancestor in the chamber. The unwrapping of a gift is the unburying of the ancestors possessions being handed down to the next life.

    Thought that was you on Rab Ellen's live stream with Dougie Scott! Was up there in 1999 as the photographer for my mate who was doin his phd on the shadow casting aspects of the stones onto the outer kerb stones of the cairns. Somebody had persuaded Historic Scotland to let them cover over the north east cairn and passage with wood and heavy black plastic to simulate the original form. We were lucky enough to witness the the sun do it's sword of light thing-creeping up the passage as the sun dropped towards the horizon. Spine tinglin stuff! At exactly 2.30pm the sun got to the back wall of the inner chamber and perfectly framed the wee upright rectangular stone on the ground tier (6.07 in your vid). That one's made of quartz and once the sun hit it the whole inner chamber was illuminated with this amazing golden radiant light-absolutely mind blowing! Almost forgot to take photo's....the effect only lasted a few minutes,but will stay with me forever. And that wee stone is forevermore known as "The half past two stone". Cheers from The Debatable Lands-and aw the best for 22.

      @ArranOfAlba  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow mate that sounds incredible, I got the chance to chat with those amazing men around the fire. Dougie mentioned that he had covered the cairn as well! Something i must do one day but i think dougie wants to rebuild it! 😁 Thank you for sharing your valuable knowledge and dont ever hesitate to help point me in the right direction and maybe we will meet one day! 💥

    • @alistairwilson5344
      @alistairwilson5344 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ArranOfAlba Aye,come to think of it,it was Dougie that got that together-unfortunately he missed it as it had been snowing all morning and the sky only cleared to the horizon about an hour before sunset. I can imagine rebuilding it would be on Dougie's "to do" list-he is an amazing font of information,and a hoot and a half. Yer a lucky fecker to live so close by. We were camping up there for nearly a week and spent quite a bit of time in the evenings sitting in the covered cairn-it was warm! Really noticed the difference-the place comes alive at night.....I was doing quite a bit of night time photography,long exposure star trails etc and always felt we were being watched-in a very benign way. Had the same feeling at quite a few other sites I've spent time at-Callanish and Dunino Den were particularly strong. I do like the idea of ritual reuse that Richard Bradley postulated-in the case of Clava that seems to take the form of the local lune's doing shrooms there during the season! Do you go up there at night?

      @@alistairwilson5344 Just seen this message now, i never get the reply in my notifications. I've actually spent many a windy nights there the past few weeks. When the Moon shines the place just Illuminates! So crazy that words are useless. I lived in Harris for a while and every chance I had I would go to Callanish as well mate, another place that just sends my bones cold. They left us their spirits it's sad only some can find them, Cheers
