The Taptic Engine is just a weight on a spring with a magnet to move it and make it vibrate.
When you connect that to the output of an electronic amplifier it behaves like a speaker because the weight is moving just like a regular speaker would.
This is different from a regular speaker though because it's not designed to create sound waves in the air, only vibrations that we feel.
That's the reason it gets so loud when it's on the white table, because the vibrations are transferred into the table which then vibrates in the room, creating sound waves.

@@Unknown-sg9zi I'm not sure but it sounds pretty similar. It's ultimately the same goal, just to vibrate something. They make things like Taptic Engine for actual audio use in home theaters. They're called 'audio exciters' and they can be placed on your chair to act like a subwoofer and give you more feel of the bass.

LOLOLOLOL I’ve been doing this by connecting the pads from broken headphones to the vibrating motors. It also works on the one for the iPhone 4S, and the iPhone 6 and 6S. I’ve always been wondering how it would be done for the bigger ones.

Cameras are much much more complicated. Normally they’re first use a special serialized stream of data across several pins to transfer data so you’d need a decoder for each camera. Then you’d also have less than iPhone quality images as a lot of processing is done in real time on the iPhone to take good photos.
