Nothing can ever replace these songs. We must be sure that we have a personal relationship with Jesus. If we know Jesus we have a safe place in Him. We will have somewhere to lay our head. Beautiful
Man singing Bass short man with deep voice on left is The late Carl D. Coates. My uncle one of the underrated bass singers of his time. My dad died when I was 2 months old. My uncle was one of the first people on the scene. He made a promise that day to make sure he was closest man to a father I would have. RIP UNCLE CARL.
Charles sung for the lord for decades, i came upon his music a few years back when i was going through the tougest storm in my life, having turned from my savior i was at the bottom of a deep valley when i walked into a alabama truckstop and heard his music for the first time. , i bought the cd and spent the next few hours listening to the cd and coming back to the lord. God used his music to turn me around, and i will never go back, God let me thank Charles in 2005, and i thank God daily

How sweet it truly was, to hear songs like this first hand. Gospel singing like this was the norm. I'm glad through postings, I can hear it now. It's so beautiful to me...
Oh my gosh I am just so loving this too much have me a happy time here at home just me and Jesus. Thank you so much for sharing. Just a little piece of heaven now.
Black young people : this is where Rock & Roll , Jazz , Blues , Soul , country , Bebop , HipHop , Disco ,R&B all started ...not by Italians /Greeks/French/Jews or Appalachian poor southern whites - but here within us , we are a special Chosen people and Unique trend setters all over the world near and far ...don't let them tell you anything different !!!
I would respectfully suggest it's a combination of many races who brought their particular sound to the table. To single out just one as being the total majority is simplistic, disrespectful and overly prideful.
I've loved gospel singing for a longtime. It is my favorite genre of music. I love Old Time Blues, too. We used to listen to Ernie's Record Mart out of Nashville, Tennessee. Those were the good ole days. They sold records as a pkg. deal. You might remember Little Walter who was in Cadillac Records with and Muddy Waters cried when he died. Walter was one of the best Harmonica players around, but he loved to fight and that was bad. Howlin Wolf, who paid Social Security for his band members, Wolf, died in the hospital. His Mother wouldn't accept $200 dollars because she had a problem, and called it the devil's money. She threw the money on the ground. I think I have Wolf heard he died too.
I like the intro. It was very creative how the 4 guys departed for the 5th singer to come center stage. I am amazed at how black folks didn't have much back then, but they were working what they had! I'm inspired.
+Rainy5062002 That was every common in most black groups be they secular music or gospel music, it was very competitive during those times so each group always did some form of embellishment in their introduction of their song for the lead singer to give it much hype and drama especially in the men group.
This is a very silly statement. Howre you gonna say something like this. Whyd you gotta bring race and deprivation into this Edit: its been 9 months since i commented and im not over how patronising this comment is. Romanticising the deprivation of black people smh
My late hubby and I aw these guys some yrs ago at a church that was 5 mins from our house. They were good. One of them was 80 something at the time. He's in heaven now with my Mike. He had such spunk dancing around on stage.

My grandfather use to sing this song at The Greater Friendship Baptist Church. In Brooklyn NYC! Back in the 1980's. He's a native of Elizabeth city North Carolina.
That has to be Julius Cheeks, though his voice is not it's usual strength. After decades of hearing his voice only, it was a thrill to see this video. "Burying Ground" by the Sensational Nightingales is posted on TH-cam and his voice is awesome in that song.

When did carl die?
I got a bit of shock when I realised your uncle was the bass.
He contributed to a remarkable body of work, of which you can be be very proud.
Was he on the recordings
That means the great Dorothy Love Coates (his wife) was your aunt. Your family is gospel royalty!
@@loewenheims Sorry this took so long to reply. Uncle Carl died August 29th 1999 buried in Grace Hill Cemetery in Birmingham
