  • This astrophotography time lapse film features stunning sequences of the Milky Way center as it moves across breathtakingly beautiful and exotic landscapes. It was filmed over several months in 2016 and 2017. My son Ryan accompanied me throughout this journey helping with the camera equipment and providing great company on the many late nights we spent together filming this.

      It is even crazier to think that the vast majority of what you are seeing in films like these are stars within a spiral arm of our own galaxy. And most of those stars have solar systems. Then you read up on the Hubble Deep Field picture and how that was taken.... it really does put things into perspective that our greatest achievements pale in comparison to what lies "out there." I like to think that even though I cannot physically see all of those stars with the naked eye, these new cameras show us they exist, and we are being showered with little, tiny photons they emitted long ago. We are connected in spite of our distance!
      So yeah, we are all alone in this big ole place. Makes sense, right? 😎😉

    • @Brentolini23
      @Brentolini23 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Take this for thought, the universe is a few billion light years in diameter? Some of those stars probably died or exploded millions of years ago and the light we see is that old? And light travels about 200k miles a second... consider that it’s mind blowing

      Where I live, I see some stars, but not very many. Same problem you have! Fortunately, I get to spend quite a bit of time in the spring and summer- when the Milky Way core is above the horizon- traveling to dark areas where there is no light pollution and the stars like to hang out and show off!!

      I wonder if you go out in the ocean where on land light pollution is a factor. Will you be able to see the milky way in the middle of the ocean.

    • @Tarnway0412
      @Tarnway0412  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      If you're on land in a light polluted area but looking out over the ocean, you might see a bit more, but it still could be a problem. Obviously, it will be better if you are at the beach by a smaller community. A beach at a big city would probably not be so good.
      Here is a link to our most recent film from 2018. Take a look at the scenes from 47 seconds to about 1:11. They were filmed from an area by a small town with about 7300 people. It worked out pretty well.
      m.th-cam.com/video/rSWqY5XOKcs/w-d-xo.html
      You should also be aware, that the Milky Way comes up from certain parts of the sky, depending on where you live. You want to be sure that when you are facing the ocean, you are looking in the correct direction, and at the right time. There is a very good app called Photo Pills which will give you all this information.

      I'm not a religious man, but I find it hard not to feel some soul-stirring moments when I watch the stars, and especially through your medium. I had assumed it was done through some sort of automation while one slept, but even if so, you'd need to monitor it.(?)

      In case you're wondering why the colors are different in these films, it is because we graded them in what's called "natural color." In spite of what many people think, the late night sky isn't really blue at all and these are the real colors. The first film you watched was made to look blue, since that look is very popular- just not accurate.

      I particularly like your scene at 2:17 with the tree foreground. It was REALLY NICE! I also see you had a go at Yosemite Tunnel View with the unfortunate but predictable result of timelapse killer headlights. We gave up on that one for night work but instead took advantage of the great sunrises you can get from there and used a lapsed sunrise in one of our other films.
      Best regards,

    • @Tarnway0412
      @Tarnway0412  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks Josh. It can be a bit challenging at first, but it gets easier and pretty routine after awhile. You'll pretty much end up using the same ISO, f stops, and shutter speeds everytime. The main thing is finding interesting foregrounds and backgrounds and the post processsing. On the otherhand, just when you think you've got it down, you end up doing something dumb like I did last weekend, shooting at night at Mt. Shasta. We were running 2 cameras and after a 2 hour time lapse at 1:30am, I realized I had one of the cameras set at f5.6 instead of f2.8. Damn!

    • @Tarnway0412
      @Tarnway0412  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your comment. We do feel fortunate to be able to access many dark sky areas where we can truly see the stars and make these films. Right now I'm in the editing process for a new night sky film for this year. With Covid, unpredictable weather, clouds, and smoke from numerous forest fires, it's been a real challenge. I'm adapting to this by utilizing some truly different techniques which should make for a very unique night sky film. Hopefully, it will be up on the channel within a couple of weeks.

      Thanks for commenting. I'm glad you enjoyed the film.
      Of the things you see moving across the sky, most are actually airplanes, which can look like shooting stars, due to the time lapse effect on them. There are also satellites, which will tend to move more slowly. However, there are a few sequences which contain objects that are moving in very erratic ways which are neither airplanes or satellites and I certainly can't explain them. So, who knows!!
      Since you enjoyed this film, here is a link to our most recent film done in 2018. I used a very different color grade on it during the post production editing process to bring out the actual natural colors in the night sky- airglow- caused by excited atoms, molecules, and ions, in the upper atmosphere.
