I’ve only played 46 2p in person, when my friend and I were brand new to 18xx. I played 62 a couple of times at the beginning of the pandemic on TTS, and Chesapeake on .games with a friend who was trying to give 18xx a shot. Really enjoyed them both (62 is one of my favorites in general). Glad you came back for another episode!
18Svea which was pnp and now awaiting publishing is one of my favorite 2p. Contenders are 18CZ and 18SJ with the bot. What is unique with 18Svea is that you can't avoid each other, you will have to fight about token spots and tracks. Really enjoyed this talk since my first years of 18XX live plays were with just 2P!
So nice to hear from you two again! Thanks for the contest. I have 1824 but haven't played it at two yet. A title that I haven't purchased yet that I think will be good at two is 18Cuba. I enjoy Lonny's titles.
I got the 18Svea print 'n play after Joe Leone published his video demo of it. Its just fantastic at both 2 and 3 players and I've played it more in the last year than my other 18xx's combined. Looking forward to AAG's professional print
Nope, didn't expect to hear that music again! I remember playing 1860 once at 2p and enjoying it, but that was super early in my 18xx gaming and I don't know if I'd still feel the same way about it now. I rarely play 18xx nowadays though (and also rarely play 2p games 😆)
Perfect timing for your return! I haven't played any 18xx games in ~1.5 years due to losing members of my 18xx group, but I do have a 2p game of 1862 tentatively scheduled in the upcoming weeks. I haven't play any 18xx at 2p before, but I'm more excited to get it to the table now.
Hey guys, really nice seeing you're back! 🎉 I'm fairly new to the hobby, so not made that much plays yet nor have I played a huge amount different games. 1860 still on the shelf, but really looking forward to a 2-player game of that. With 2 player so far, I only experienced 18MS twice, which I totally enjoyed. Cheers!! ✌
Really glad to see guys back! I really enjoyed this video and I agree with Tony that playing @2p is better than not playing at all! I'm very interested in checking out that 1865:Sardinia game you mentioned. I have played a lot of titles at 2p, and have a lot of fun with it... but would rather play with more when possible.
I Love 18xx Games and wish there were more seasoned players in the Cleveland Area to learn from. I am waiting for 18SVEA and have CZ. I played 1860 at 2 and it was crazy!
1840 Vienna Tramways has already been mentioned. That has a two player board overlay to recude the size of the map and a couple of the Stadtbahns are taking out. Played it once with a new-to-genre player and it was enjoyable.
Great to hear you again. We played a couple of 1862, 1846 and 1840 2-Player rounds and while 1846 was decent, 1840 did't worked well and 1862 gave us a near perfect 18xx gameplay experience. With the 3 different company types in '62 and the mergers there is so much going on on the map. Really fun stuff! But unfortunately we never had a lot pf cross investing either. In 1840 the auction just made no sense for us. And that normaly is a big point in this game. So didn't worked out well, played it only once. Next up with 2 players will be 18Cuba and 18Moon.
This is a great topic considering I play 18xx with 2 often. Just played a really good game of CZ yesterday with a difference of about 400 between us. I agree with a lot of your listed games for 2 players: CZ(have not played the Moravia-Silesia map scenario yet, but we will), 1822MRS/NRS, 1822PNW, 18India, 1862, 1846 all are really good games at 2 players. But we've also explored the titles we own and found out that 61/67 works pretty well at 2, 1889 is no bad(missed this one originally), while 1830 and 1854(always played 2 players each) are not very good at that player count. Have not tried 35, 70, or 56 nor looked for any variants for 2-players, It can be tough to get peeps to play 18xx because of the time commitment. Telling people ...well the game may be 5-8 hours long, can be an instant "no thanks" for many. But can get 2 to 4 more often than not. It was nice to see some mention of titles in the genre I haven't played like: 1824, 1865Sardinia, 18OE, 18GB, 18Chesapeake(not really interested in this one), 1812, or 1868. Of the titles we own and mentioned in the 1st paragraph, the one I'd love to get(if reproduced) is 18EU. Theoretically could be an interesting game at 2, but like them all in general, most are better at more players. Dune: Imperium is another game like CZ where a 3rd automated player is a mutual annoyance for the active players.
Hey Tony and Chris, welcome back! I normally listen to you guys on Podcast form but happy to see that there are videos as well. 18Mag has an interesting 2 player game in the box, tighter map and more limited company roster. Normally we play 18xx games 3 player, but would play 18Mag 2 player again in the future. Would love to make it out to the Traxx convention one day to meet you both, but will have to live vicariously through Issue 3 in the meantime, looking forward to it! Hope you guys find something that interests you to talk about soon for another episode! Cheers, - Brent
@@GameAllNiteShowHey Chris and Tony, just wanted to check in. I sent my details in when you replied and wanted to make sure they didn’t go to your junk mail :)
1865 Sardinia sounds amazing. Would love to try that one at 2. Also would love to try 1868 Wyoming. At 2 I've enjoyed 1824, 18CZ, 1860. Going to be playing 1840 Vienna Tramways at 2 soon.
Wonderful video! The only 18xx I've played so far is 1889 and those two plays were two player only. I like the odd number of companies, the restrictive and memorable tile set, and the mountains that act as a time bomb as to when someone's going to finally start crossing over and trying to merge with other routes. I recently got 18Neb and I'm hoping to get that one played as well since it offers something different from 1889. 1882 is another I got just because I found it cheap. It doesn't seem as suited to two players but like you said, if you don't play you'll never know!
Played 18FL a few times 2 player and quite enjoyed it. The stock market isn’t really interesting but running the companies is still a blast. Played 1861 2 player twice-one partial game and one full game to learn it. It was surprisingly good-I haven’t played a receivership game yet but the RSR works similarly in that you can dump your company into the National. Even though the map is big and the stations expensive, it works ok. I think it could be great by changing the map scale for 2 players so that there were half as many hexes available…or 2/3 as many.
When my son was about 10 years old, we played a fair bit of 1825 two-player, both Unit 2 and Unit 3. I also played a lot of Unit 3 with a friend, and we playtested and helped develop the two-player set-up for 1812. Neither my son nor that friend still play 18xx now and I almost entirely play 18xx with more players. I did enjoy a two-player game of 18Svea recently and echo the recommendations for that title.
18USA is surprisingly good at 2, although long. The variable setup makes it so it can be played as a pretty good operational game and the 17-like rules means that while some of the aggressive things like shorts aren't necessarily used as much the complicated mergers and friendly sales you can do within your many companies makes up for it, especially since you're likely to be running 4-5 companies each!
I’ve played 18MS at 2 and enjoyed it enough, though later sold the game. Very much want to play 1862 with 2, as I think it would be a good way to get a better grasp on the game.
New to 18xx so not played any at two player but certainly would like to try 18chesapeake, not sure if Shikoku 1889 has a two player, would like to try 1824.
I would give 1889 a shot for two player! You can play it two without any special rules. It will go on for longer than normal and might seem a little multiplayer solitaire but my two plays of it were fun nonetheless. And there's still enough times you can interact with your opponent in a surprising way.
I would try my Unit 3 but I sold that thing for $375. Hard to turn that down, but I have liked and played both Chessie and CZ. CZ a bit better. Playing SJ now. TBD on that one.
Please give your lovely game:18 India the extra rules and FaQ care it deserves so we can know what the intention was with some of its weird unique additions. Btw, since you guys love 24, Galatolol has made 1894 available in dot games with an incredible train rush inspired by 24's. Wow, no mention of 1860!?
I've played 1862 and 1822mx 2 player and both have played well. I would love to play 2-player 18Korea but do not have a copy..... (p.s. I already have 18India, of course, so pass to the next person, pls.)
Have you played 18SVEA? I have heard this is supposed to be good at 2P counts (it is in my upcoming AAG order). I have tried the following 2P - 1860 - 1862/EA - 18NEB - 1846 2p variant I like the Hutton titles the best because you can dump an entire company when it is no longer helpful (and the upside of that for the other player is that if in receivership through the automated "operating" of the company, another player may decide to start investing into it again once it has a train). If you're playing '60 I would play the version where you can start any company (out of historical order) and the train variant adds a nice wrinkle to the train roster. NEB is just a great game. The race to getting to the two 5 share companies at the end is fun. I really like 18xx but am not able to link up with my 18xx local group very often due to life business so trying to play 2P is fun. Would love to hear your thoughts on SVEA if you play it. Also would love to hear your thoughts about the 1817 family and or other games that you've played on 18xx.games. Best wishes!
