My mother, Barbara Britton, opened the show with a 2-minute live Revlon commercial. After it was aired, some stores in the deep south removed all their Revlon products.

Just another example of the simple-mindedness of America's racists and bigots....perpetually feeling "threatened" by the excellence and success of anybody that doesn't look like them - especially if they are black. Scholarly studies by psychiatrists have attributed it to a deep down feeling of inferiority and insecurity.

That’s terrible! The bigots in the south had such thin skin when it came to seeing black artists being featured in any form of media.
Your mother was also a fine spokeswoman, and I’m sure she was outraged at something so stupid happening after such a marvelous show.

I just read the sad news that Harry Belafonte died today at age 96 I saw him live once in the 80's he put on an excellent and entraining show. Belafonte not only sing and act, Belafonte was an important voice in the ’60s civil rights movement, and he later embarked on charitable activities on behalf of underdeveloped African nations. He was an outspoken opponent of South Africa’s apartheid policies. Rest in Peace Harry Belafonte and thanks for the excellent body of work you left behind to enjoy. March 1, 1927 - April 25, 2023

“Sylvie “- written and recorded by Huddie Ledbetter ( Leadbelly who also wrote “Mo Yet “ )
Belafonte refined it and made into an African -American folk classic.
Belafonte first recorded it on the album “Belafonte “- 1955 - which was number one on the charts ( LP’s ) for six weeks. He later recorded it in 1959 on the album “Belafonte At Carnegie Hall “. Second song after the magnificent opener “Darlin Cora “ - perfect change of pace - then followed by “John Henry “ -greatest concert album by an individual to this day ( in my opinion) .”Sylvie “ was subsequently taken out the repertoire. To this day my favourite Belafonte song - always will be.

Great scenes with the kids... 1959! Wonder where they all are now... Also wonder whether all that idealized interracial joyfulness was accepted on television in the segregated South in '59. Anyone have a reference for a book or article with a serious discussion of this program and any others like it? Rest in peace, Harry Belafonte.

Not just a fabulous Singer and performer, he was very influential in Dr. King's epic March on Washington. Belafonte helped raise funds for many of Dr. King's works, and helped convince many of the actors and singers who joined the March. He and Poitier came up into theater about the same time, and were often up for the same parts. They discussed this at length, and decided that Belafonte would devote much of his time and talent towards Civil Rights work, and Poitier would press ahead in acting.
They both have been profound influences in both endeavours ❣️

“Bald Headed Woman “ - from the album “Swing Dat Hammer “
Album won a a Grammy for best folk album .
Belafonte should have easily won the Grammy that year for “Belafonte At Carnegie Hall “ .
Didn’t .I say it was racial .Blatant discrimination.
Yet a few years later Judy Garland won for her album at Carnegie Hall .
    No comparison.
