I belong to the Gujjar community, and I believe you have been misled by the individuals discussing the Gujjar, Pahari, and Bakarwal communities. Their portrayal of these groups is quite different from reality. Gujjars and Bakarwals are essentially the same class of people, differing only in their choice of livestock. Gujjars typically keep cows and buffaloes, while Bakarwals tend to rear sheep and goats. However, both communities share the same genealogy and belong to the same sub-casts. They are closely related and share a nomadic lifestyle, migrating to higher hills in summer to graze their cattle or sheep. When Gujjars and Bakarwals come down to the plains, they often work in the lands of the Phari class people in exchange for grain. While some educated Gujar Bakarwals have transitioned to different lifestyles, the tribe as a whole still struggles with poverty.
In contrast, the Phari community is quite different from Gujjars and Bakarwals. Although some Phari people also have livestock and live below the poverty level, they represent a combination of various upper-class communities. This includes Syeds, the highest caste among Muslims, as well as families of Rajas and Maharajas, known as Rajputs, many of whom are landlords. The Pahari community's identity is primarily defined by a shared language, which is a form of Western Punjabi. Based on this linguistic connection, they have formed the Pahari Ethnic group, recently receiving Schedule Tribe status in 2024, whereas Gujjars and Bakarwals were granted this status in 1991.
I hope this clarification helps to provide a more accurate understanding of these communities.
