  • Old Sarum was the original site of the cathedral city of Sailsbury, that began life in around 400 BC as a vast Celtic Iron-Age fort.
Following the Norman Conquest, William the Conqueror created an inner motte and castle, transforming it into a nigh-impregnable fortress, with its own city and cathedral.
However, Old Sarum was not a good site for a city, and after the clergy demanded the cathedral moved to the site of New Sarum (modern Sailsbury) the site was eventually abandoned to become a rotten borough, until 1832, when the Reform Act was passed.

I really wish I'd had the opportunity to go to Europe while I was in the Army and to have seen all these old sites (especially from the Roman era).
On behalf of my fellow colonials, I'd like to say thanks for sharing.

When I visited Stonehenge, I was the only one to depart the tour bus to explore Sarum. From the highway, you can walk either right, nearest the main entrance, or left, which winds much further round the back (the west side, I think) of the moat & mound and there is a ravine where you can get in. I went left. So cool. Hardly a soul in the whole area, it was eerie and wonderful at the same time. I'd say I enjoyed it more than Stonehenge itself.
If you have the chance to go, go. It's a delight.

There's a great historical novel called Sarum by Edward Rutherford, you should check it out if you haven't already. It tells of the lives of the inhabitants of the town down through the centuries.

It is a very good novel. well worth reading, but at over 1000 pages in the MMPB edition it will take a while!

Fantastic, thank you! I missed this on my last tip to Salisbury. Unfortunately we got rained out and my family wasn’t up for it. I do love how I can follow along on google maps for the comfort of my bed in California!

Great to see you get stuff on that fancy doo dar camera thingy.
We have a castle where I live and it has an extermely deep ditch around it. I cant imagine it would be too easy to get across without losing quite a few men from from projectile or just from sprained ankles.

I imagine Sargon just walking around talking about the history of Sarum with himself, and everyone around him just stares and thinks he looks autistic.

I love the look of the town in 22:17. It almost looks like a town from a video game. I should probably make similar one in Gnomoria. Thanks Sargon!

If you ever make your way over to Wales, you should check out Oystermouth Castle in Swansea, but looks over the town of Mumbles. There is a big market there, and another castle, but it got blown to hell during WWII. Swansea is rather far, but another interesting castle is Cardiff Castle. There are remnants of a Roman wall there and the city itself is pretty a fun, with a good night life.

Enjoyed it greatly, but had to pause the video a few times to look up on were exactly you went. If you could incorporate a small map with your current position a few times through the exploration next video I would greatly appreciate it.

First place my cousins took me as was top of my list because was one of the places Henry II held Queen Eleanor as prisoner. Also all the old cathedrals were built on the grounds of Druid academys and their major ley lines etc. Thanks a little dizzying the camera moved so fast tho.

I really appreciate your taking the time and obvious effort to present this to us. It would have been much more enjoyable, to me, without the constant camera motion. Sometimes the camera-person was still, but the camera kept waving back and forth, rather than giving you time to focus on what the narration was discussing. I was seriously getting seasick! But it was nice to be able to see such a historical sight. Thank you!

At 19:30 of the TH-cam, you are examining the Brick Work that is going around the Pillar. I looked at that when I visited Old Sarum in 2006. Isn't that Sarcen Sandstone?

we seem to have a confusion about facing stonework being called bricks - the inner bailey is apparently a keep . Never mind - it is all interesting if a little spoiled by the weird giddy video style

I visited Old Sarum back in April when i went down to Wiltshire on holiday, i found it quite interesting apart from trying to dodge a camera crew filming some fat archaeologist looking bloke. The amount of ancient monuments down there is staggering, it would take weeks to visit them all, i'll have to visit again some day.

The motte was probably originally much deeper. Over time erosion has filled the ditch, probably by several feet, if not yards. Interesting video though.

    ENGLISH - SORBIODUNUM (Old Sarum)
SORBIODUNUM or Fortress of Serbs, or by logic Srbograd..Serbian Fortification ... (formerly called Old Sarum) What was the downfall of European history so far if they lived on the soil of England at the time of "Celts" SRBI ... What have they lavished on us! !!!
In addition to Arkaim (in Russia), it has similarities to the Serbian fortress in Radus, which is located in Germany today, in the area of Venda or Sorab or the Serbs of Lusatia.
