Kay is a very British type who is a monumental doormat but carries on cheerfully no matter how bad things get. She's quite frankly both adorable and sad at the same time.
It's a little like Steptoe and Son which was actually a black comedy. The selfish father didn't want his son to have a life of his own. Absolutely tragic....And very real.
It is. To imagine that such characters actually existing is beyond heart breaking. To not even have your own existence must be a soul-crushing realization at some point.
Her mother was afraid of losing her only child. It's a super possessive attitude a lot of mothers have. Including mine. It's a great and a hard challenge to cope with daily.
@@ErnestAbikis TOXIC FEMININITY. I know the feeling. My sister scared off about 4 or 5 girls. One wrote like 8 letters to me and she burnt them all. That girl turned out to be very stable and level headed, in a country where too many aren't. BUT in 2019 my sister used to say I SHOULD GET A MAIL ORDER BRIDE... with no idea HOW incredibly complicated they've made it, and then we got covid.... her and my mother scared away plenty and are now worried that I haven't got a girl. There's only SO MUCH CRAP you can take before you're worn out.
@@OffGridInvestor Yeah you keep saying that, but overbearing parents (dads and mothers) are not showing signs of 'toxic femininity' when they are too involved in their child's life. That would suggest that being involved in your child's life is a typical female trait and that dad's couldn't care less. Stop throwing around those words when the meaning doesn't match.
I am a french living in the UK for 10 years so now I can understand a lot more of the British humour and culture than I did before. I have discovered this gem of a woman just like a week ago - she truly is a comedic genius!
This oap is typical of some of them, barking out orders, stifling her daughters dreams, not lettin g the emergency services take them to the community centre, where they would be dry,and fed. This is a true story in some cases.
True, but did you know in the bible, parents are told "to not exasperate their children",so it goes both ways.Yes there are lots of really nice old people, but there are a few who stifle their grown up childrens dreams,by being selfish and demanding.
John Huggins yes and the amount of theses old dears that die without making a will, and then the poor Son/daughter who's lived with them for decades are left with sweet fuck all, because the family usually want to sell the house to get their bit. Very sad. 😢 😢 😢
Kay is such a tragic character but Tracey Ullman manages to make her completely hilarious whilst also poignant and sympathetic. There are people who do end up living like this, elderly themselves but forced to look after even more elderly, overbearing parents.
oh dear, what a nasty old bat that mother is. Had something very similar in our circle of friends. Very sad for the daughter it was. The actress is really good though. Very realistic.
This sketch tells a profoundly sad and all too common story about nasty selfish narcissistic mothers and yet all some commentors can say is how " fit " Dan is.... Pathetic.

It’s funny as an exaggerated portrayal of an English phenomenon that does exist!
This is both hilarious and tear jerking....Tracey Ullman is a genius.....
And there actually ARE mothers just like that.
Dan is cute. i want him to save me.
Sad indeed, but Dan was quite lovely.
Extremely lovely, very calming voice.
I've never shipped anything more than I ship Kay and Dan now.
Thing is Dan is about 35 and Kay is about 70. Mother is about 90.
this is one of the saddest skits i have ever watched

Tragically, Kay is based on a real woman Tracey knew for years who worked in a bank in the Midlands.
My very thoughts

Really funny....but also sad too
Damn that skit to a dark turn. I know a few people who appear to be in the same type of situation. Sad.
Kay's mother has got to be the worst person ever.
Thats kind of the point

when you let your overbearing mother control you after you're well pass your adulthood
or why your mother ends up controlling you as an adult - because they manipulated your childhood
My mother is like her and none of us go near her for our own health.
@@AWhileHanlin, save yourself, dear!
Those are psychopaths parents. Ruuuuuunnnnnnnnnnnnn!
Very touching. Kay is a dear.
Great story. Tracey is much more than a comedian.
The ending was actually very Heartbreaking.
I´d love to be rescued by Dan.....

Kay Clark will forever be my spirit animal.
Tracey is a genius. This is both funny, but also very sad.
Absolutely love Tracey Ullman, such a talented lady. Kay and mother sketches are my favourite.

Well, he can rescue me from anything. 😅❤️
The old bag .. has ruined it's own daughter's life.
Brilliant actress for the mother too! :D hehehe
Kay is heartbreaking.
Dear God... ancient Greeks had a name for such comic drama: Ilarotragedy
How on earth has the BBC not given her another series
Remember Dorothy from the Golden Girls. The time when she went out on a date with a guy from high school. This is exactly like that.
Thats actually a very depressing character if you think about how many people actually end up like this
I love how Kay say’s sandwiches 🥪 😂
I love British comedy
This was so sad 😭
What a mum... egoistic....
Hope she finds love with Dan.....
Reminds me of the Bette Davies film, Now, Voyager.
Some women shouldn't have children. Very sad. 😢 😢 😢
It used to go on, mothers wanted their daughter to stay at home and look after them. Delia Morris
Can Dan come and rescue me please?
