I agree. I would love to see what he did about the rockery and perhaps what it looked like when established. A Very good presentation and very informative. I wished I had realised just how you can use mortar the way he does when I built my pond 30 years ago. Its now so overgrown you cannot see it and I believe it has an old shipping trolly semi submerged. Lost interest in it I'm afraid.
As an ex aquatics supplier, now retired and having built a few ponds I can honestly say your methods and the way you explain the reasons are truly spot on. While the pond is not designed for serious Koi keeping it is more than adequate for keeping some really nice pond fish and attracting wild life. I know I'm late to the party but thank you for sharing.
I have watched plenty of pond guide videos and you put most of them to shame. I leard alot so thank you. It is obvious you are good at what you do. A good mix of not caring about getting your hands dirty and an eye for the artisic stuff with the rocks. I like you are accomodating to the critters as well =p You also highlighted for me the need for good quality materials. It really shows in the end result.

My hubby and I both loved your video AND your accent! ...it was very informative. We have a few questions: 1) Does the more expensive filter/pump/filtering waterfall mean less cleaning of the units? Some have "baskets" that you take out and empty and some have all sorts of filter mats/sponges/media bags/bio balls/etc. that must be washed off daily with a hose...we are looking for the least amount of work for our pond and if the more expensive units mean less work, than that's what we want. 2) I'm seeing the name brands of Atlantic, Oasis, and Savio a lot in my pond-shopping. Is one brand better than another? 3) One of the filters I ran across has "Patented Integrated UV System Housing" so does that mean it has the UV filters inside of it? Do you recommend that over buying a separate UV light? 4) we are looking at pond kits to make it easier for us to install....do you recommend kits and if so, what name brand is a good one to go with for the least amount of work? We are looking for a pond that's about 1800-2000 gallons...and finally 5) do you recommend gold fish or koi and what's the difference? I've heard koi will eat all your plants and I want plants in my pond...thanks for your expertise! Your new fans, Darleen & David Riffle
The pressure filters are very good as they can be hidden out of the way and still have the outlet feeding up to a cascade. I'm not involved in the US market so don't know what is available there but as long as you go for a pump big enough to give a good flow down the cascade. When sizing the pump you will need to give the dealer the vertical measurement from water surface to highest point of cascade, width of widest fall of cascade and the length (and internal diameter) of the pipe for them to properly size a pump for the job. Once that flow rate for cascade was worked out you'd take 10%-15% off for the pressure filter (that is normally how much flow is restricted by a pressure filter). Once that is worked out then step up to the next pump up if necessary. The Oase pumps are expensive but are very reliable, very low maintenance and have very low running costs which is a major concern considering a filter needs to run 24/7. I have seen many pumps available in the US and the running costs are crazy as they are such high wattage (power consumption). The filter would be sized depending on the pond volume and stock e.g. a 20000 filter would suit a 10000 pond with a mix of fish or a 7000-8000 pond with koi. It depends on the manufacturer but most will have sensible information on how capable each model of filter is. Hope that helps.
Very good. It is generally something simple like that. Quite often the clip will not nip down perfectly and can actually cause the pipe to be deformed and leak so tape avoids that from happening.
thank you for the wonderful demonstration- I have a medium Koi pond that I dug over four summers and the fish have outgrown it- we are going to dig a footer for a new porch and dig another pond to join the old one- your video will be much help!
Since the pond is below ground level there is nowhere to drain excess water to but the outlet of the filter runs to a drain so by simply turning the dial on the filter the pond can be drained down to a desired level easily. Thanks for watching.
+Pondguru Outdoors yes I'm in the usa. 40 mil is the thickness of the pond liner and grade. firestone is the best and most expensive. but well worth it. I've built well over 30000 koi ponds since I've been doing them. almost 5yrs. it's a big demand here. and people want there ponds to last so I use 40 mil. it's durable and less likely to become brittle. it has a lifetime warrenty
+Pondguru Outdoors also... pond pumps and filter 52nd to burn out quickly.... 95% of my costumers prefer useing a sand filtration system or custom system via pool pump and median. more reliable and easy cleaning

Excellent instruction and illustration of how to properly build a pond and spillway. The only thing missing is a look at the finished pond, after the water clears and after the surrounding landscaping is in place.

They've inspired my girlfriend and I to make our very own ponds - a small container pond based on an old cattle trough which we're very proud of and a conventional pond which utilises a lot of your ideas and to which we're about to add a waterfall/cascade. We did intend to make a video using Geordie accents but forgot! Besides, she sounds like Joanna Lumley, though is from Newcastle as I am.

Will it last 'til winter? Are you expecting it to self-destruct? lol Yes it will be fine over the seasons and as explained in the video the pump can be moved to just under the cascade when the weather is cold to avoid disturbing the deeper (relatively warmer) water and chilling the fish. Always best to keep the pump running and move the pump as this keeps the filter bacteria alive and avoids new set up or lag in the spring. Thanks for watching and appreciating the videos.

You've made the cascade very naturally for the site it is located in and I love the way you've broken up the edge of the pond with the couple of rocks and cobbles. great video. I have a hard liner pond and we put the dirt pile on the side- I have the rubber liner - just needed to figure it out and you helped. Now I know to put the liner over the edge of the pond so it won't leak. I wasn't going to use cement but can see how it works better. Your video shows exactly what I want to do. thanks so much! I must say you really do a great job. I felt as if you did this job like you would have done for your own home, no shortcuts. You took extra consideration even after the work was already done, like with adding rockery stones to mix up the wall stones to give it a more beautiful look as a whole. Basically, good job!

Yes, I regularly build on shelves which will be submerged and normally do that to retain loose cobbles behind the rocks / cobbles I have cemented in. That prevents them falling into the pond.

I never go with the jumble of cobbles to cover liner as it provides cavities to collect muck and full cleaning is much harder. In my area of the UK we have sandstone as bedrock so I go with the walling and large slab to give solid accessibility around the edges but there are loads of different ways it can be done and I suppose there is no right or wrong way. Sometimes the ponds will have lights. Black liner gives a greater impression of depth too. Thanks for watching and appreciating the video.

I'm sure Oase do not have a distributor in the US but they do supply some outlets. Unfortunately since I'm located in the UK, I don't know any of them but if you do a google search for US Oase dealer / supplier? something is bound to come up. Even a google shopping search for any of their products (set to 'nearest first') should locate some sellers in the US. Thanks for watching and appreciating the videos.
If there is goind to be alot of cement which will ultimately be under water the pond will be filled up to maximum after a week or so, left to run for another week, drained then refilled. That should ensure the majority of lime is removed. It would then run for a couple of weeks before adding the first fish. Thanks for watching.
The filter would be hidden by plants / bushes which were to be planted on and around the mound so provided it wasn't right at the edge of the pond or on top of the mound it could easily be disguised, no worries. Thanks for watching and appreciating the videos.
No worries, glad you found the video useful. Cement is fine as long as you use a waterproofer in the mix and fill the pond about a week or two after the cementing is complete, run for a few days then completely drain and refill to remove most of the lime from water. A week or two after that it will be fine to introduce fish.

+J Aaron-Alexis I loved making the pond construction videos and that is the thing I miss most about landscaping but I had to give that up when my shop was failing and my online sales business was growing. I later closed my shop too and work from home. I will be shooting a pond update video soon.

My hubby and I both loved your video AND your accent! ...it was very informative. We have a few questions: 1) Does the more expensive filter/pump/filtering waterfall mean less cleaning of the units? Some have "baskets" that you take out and empty and some have all sorts of filter mats/sponges/media bags/bio balls/etc. that must be washed off daily with a hose...we are looking for the least amount of work for our pond and if the more expensive units mean less work, than that's what we want. 2) I'm seeing the name brands of Atlantic, Oasis, and Savio a lot in my pond-shopping. Is one brand better than another? 3) One of the filters I ran across has "Patented Integrated UV System Housing" so does that mean it has the UV filters inside of it? Do you recommend that over buying a separate UV light? 4) we are looking at pond kits to make it easier for us to install....do you recommend kits and if so, what name brand is a good one to go with for the least amount of work? We are looking for a pond that's about 1800-2000 gallons...and finally 5) do you recommend gold fish or koi and what's the difference? There are a couple of brands I do not recognise there - what country are you in? I really only know the UK / Europe products.
United States. Basically, what is the easiest to maintain type of filter, pump, and waterfall filter? Thanks so much! Darleen
The pressure filters are very good as they can be hidden out of the way and still have the outlet feeding up to a cascade. I'm not involved in the US market so don't know what is available there but as long as you go for a pump big enough to give a good flow down the cascade.
When sizing the pump you will need to give the dealer the vertical measurement from water surface to highest point of cascade, width of widest fall of cascade and the length (and internal diameter) of the pipe for them to properly size a pump for the job.
Once that flow rate for cascade was worked out you'd take 10%-15% off for the pressure filter (that is normally how much flow is restricted by a pressure filter). Once that is worked out then step up to the next pump up if necessary.
The Oase pumps are expensive but are very reliable, very low maintenance and have very low running costs which is a major concern considering a filter needs to run 24/7. I have seen many pumps available in the US and the running costs are crazy as they are such high wattage (power consumption).
The filter would be sized depending on the pond volume and stock e.g. a 20000 filter would suit a 10000 pond with a mix of fish or a 7000-8000 pond with koi. It depends on the manufacturer but most will have sensible information on how capable each model of filter is.

Very good. It is generally something simple like that. Quite often the clip will not nip down perfectly and can actually cause the pipe to be deformed and leak so tape avoids that from happening.
What material is the underlay made up of and what was the length and width of the liner used?

Since the pond is below ground level there is nowhere to drain excess water to but the outlet of the filter runs to a drain so by simply turning the dial on the filter the pond can be drained down to a desired level easily.

+Pondguru Outdoors yes I'm in the usa. 40 mil is the thickness of the pond liner and grade. firestone is the best and most expensive. but well worth it. I've built well over 30000 koi ponds since I've been doing them. almost 5yrs. it's a big demand here. and people want there ponds to last so I use 40 mil. it's durable and less likely to become brittle. it has a lifetime warrenty
+Pondguru Outdoors also... pond pumps and filter 52nd to burn out quickly.... 95% of my costumers prefer useing a sand filtration system or custom system via pool pump and median. more reliable and easy cleaning

Excellent instruction and illustration of how to properly build a pond and spillway. The only thing missing is a look at the finished pond, after the water clears and after the surrounding landscaping is in place.

Hi Richard, just want to say a quick thank you for all the time and effort you've put into your videos. They've inspired my girlfriend and I to make our very own ponds - a small container pond based on an old cattle trough which we're very proud of and a conventional pond which utilises a lot of your ideas and to which we're about to add a waterfall/cascade. We did intend to make a video using Geordie accents but forgot! Besides, she sounds like Joanna Lumley, though is from Newcastle as I am.

Yes it will be fine over the seasons and as explained in the video the pump can be moved to just under the cascade when the weather is cold to avoid disturbing the deeper (relatively warmer) water and chilling the fish. Always best to keep the pump running and move the pump as this keeps the filter bacteria alive and avoids new set up or lag in the spring.

great video. I have a hard liner pond and we put the dirt pile on the side- I have the rubber liner - just needed to figure it out and you helped. Now I know to put the liner over the edge of the pond so it won't leak. I wasn't going to use cement but can see how it works better. Your video shows exactly what I want to do. thanks so much! Yes, I regularly build on shelves which will be submerged and normally do that to retain loose cobbles behind the rocks / cobbles I have cemented in. That prevents them falling into the pond.

I never go with the jumble of cobbles to cover liner as it provides cavities to collect muck and full cleaning is much harder. In my area of the UK we have sandstone as bedrock so I go with the walling and large slab to give solid accessibility around the edges but there are loads of different ways it can be done and I suppose there is no right or wrong way. Sometimes the ponds will have lights. Black liner gives a greater impression of depth too.

I'm sure Oase do not have a distributor in the US but they do supply some outlets. Unfortunately since I'm located in the UK, I don't know any of them but if you do a google search for US Oase dealer / supplier? something is bound to come up. Even a google shopping search for any of their products (set to 'nearest first') should locate some sellers in the US.

If there is goind to be alot of cement which will ultimately be under water the pond will be filled up to maximum after a week or so, left to run for another week, drained then refilled. That should ensure the majority of lime is removed. It would then run for a couple of weeks before adding the first fish.

The filter would be hidden by plants / bushes which were to be planted on and around the mound so provided it wasn't right at the edge of the pond or on top of the mound it could easily be disguised, no worries.

No worries, glad you found the video useful. Cement is fine as long as you use a waterproofer in the mix and fill the pond about a week or two after the cementing is complete, run for a few days then completely drain and refill to remove most of the lime from water. A week or two after that it will be fine to introduce fish.
