One of Bens strengths is his insane shoulder flexibility, he get so deep into scap retraction that the ball gets even more deception than his insane velo would imply
Dude is a freak. I thought Aroldis & Hicks were about as much 🔥 gas as you could throw but Ben said hold my beer. In the 90’s a 94-95mph fastball was considered elite. Since the mid-2000’s it’s slowly ticked up to 99-100 as the regular elite fastball from the top power pitchers. Now a 91-93 slider or cutter is a normal thing too from power pitchers😮 We see the occasions freakish power arm hitting over 100. I played HS ball & was a 3B but worked my tail off at pitching. I built a pitching backstop from a picnic table & extra wood & parts. I used to throw every day whether it was 95 degrees or 17 degrees here in NY. I can visualize the first time my curve broke substantially 12-6. That was a triumphant feeling. Now I’m stocky & athletic but not tall. I truly believe that if I had more height I could have at least played college & minor league ball as a pitcher. I studied & tinkered with pitches, mechanics, grips, etc in an almost scientific manner obsessively. Actually the other day the neighbors son was visiting from Mass & ran into him as we hadn’t seem each other in years since we were kids. He brought up me pitching in the backyard in all types of weather during all hours of the day & laughed at how you’d hear the loud thud of the ball hitting the wood even at night. Anyway, I consciously & obsessively worked at arm strength & velocity. My FB topped at 81. That was freaking hard to attain. It involves strength which ai have a lot of but lacked the leverage & whippiness that comes from longer limbs. My Dad is 6’0” & my Mom 5’0” & I landed right in the middle. It could have been worse as my Mom is likely closed to 4’11”. Point is these velocities are insane & it’s hard to comprehend how starters can throw 90-100 a game & still hit 99mph in the 7th or 8th. The strain on the arm & shoulder is insane. I probably threw 120 pitches one game in HS where we got destroyed like 20-8. My arm felt like it was going to fall off. I have painful bone spurs at my elbow & am sure there is a lot of scar tissue & junk in the elbow area. Anyway, these dudes are freaks. Though I love football & admire basketball along with other sports like motorcycles, archery, skiing, etc baseball is ny favorite. I truly believe there is nothing harder to do than hit or pitch.
Having pitched in the 90s, the Ray Guns were not as generous as the guns they use these days but this dude is legit. Jugs were closer to what you see nowadays. I think the handful of hardest throwers in 90s would be right up there with the hardest throwers today but there are just far more gas throwers for sure.
Tbh, after watching his mechanics breakdown, I’m a little bit worried about his health. His torso is open when the front foot strike, and his lead leg block is leaking energy , and young pitchers like him ,heavy, with high velocity are the kind with high injury risk. Just want him to stay health, cuz he’s just filthy!
his dedication in the weight room prolly gonna save him there - he said he grew 10 inches senior year of HS and was working out the whole time leading up to it. To say the least I think he may be built different
His torso is nowhere close to open at landing, not to mention the ridiculous depth of his scap retraction- he wouldn’t be able to be the hardest thrower in the MLB if that wasn’t the case
They paused this clip about a frame late. His torso is definitely within an acceptable range at foot strike. This was a poor video to look at. Definitely too low frame rate to judge lead leg block. Highly doubt anyone's throwing 105 with poor lead leg block.
He's like Roger Clemens in his body type. Broad, tall, strong big dude with great mechanics that should save his arm in the long run (especially since he's already had Tommy John surgery). Like Clemens, he generates power from his lower body and core, which takes some pressure off of his arm.
If he stays as a closer I can see him being ok airing it out for 1 inning. If he tries to maintain that velo as a starter though his elbow will end up in the crowd by the 3rd inning.
Understand that mechanics is not what make you throw hard. If it was girls could throw just as hard as men. Is having the correcto throwing program and increasing the variables that influence pitching velocity and hitting exit velocity. Is how you develop your body to make it transfer that strength into the throw over time. Dont think is too eqsy as just put the arm in the correct position and all of the sudden youll throw harder than joyce.
Especially when he says no to doing weighted balls and bands to gain velocity! He said when he was small/underdeveloped he played catch everyday and tried to throw as hard he could. That is the classic way to gain velocity over time you hit the nail on the head!
@@foofromthe6 well i would not recommend throwing every day as hard as ypu can. I can see why he had tommy john surgery and problems with the growth plates.
What a silly comment. Pitching mechanics are how you maximize velocity. They're why there's a girl who's hit like 86 and I'd be willing to bet we'll see a woman throw 90 within the decade. Obviously strength is a significant factor but to downplay the role of mechanics is absurd.
@@noahmcdaniel4920 you cannot change mechanics just by changing the way you move and expect to throw harder it doesnt work that way. As your body gets better as you are throwing over time correctly and correctly i mean without overttaining. Having good progressions increaseing strngth flexibility. Mechanics will sync in by themselves. You dont need to work on them.
@@baseball-xt3uj that's just patently false. Training facilities across the country are doing just that including a facility I coach at and my own private clients.
Did we notice his shoulders are early at front foot strike DeRosa or whatever the guys name doesn’t know what he’s talking about it’s not perfect. He’s early arm Cocker early trunk rotator which is going to result in arm injury Tommy John

Sounds great!
The league will catch up to him next year. It always does.

Seems like a great guy.
Wow that’s amazing stuff. Best of luck for a long successful career to Ben. Hard work pays off.
Good segment from MDR, he breaks it down so easily to understand
havent seen an Angels closer with this kind of energy since K Rod! loved Raisel but this guy is different
Aroldis Chapman just threw 105 mph tonight
yeahh when they said “this guys doing stuff that we haven’t seen” i instantly thought of chapman

Doesn't Ben have a twin brother?
He does and he’s also in the Angels system. He’s not as good though, he quit baseball for a couple years.
Yeah. I think his name is Jerry.

These poor young men, are wearing their mom's Capri pants, from the 1990's...
To be fair the guy is jacked. Most of what he will wear will fit him snug
You're either very overweight or severely underweight
Young guys definitely wear more feminine clothes nowadays. Thats a non-debatable fact.
