This video was well worth the wait, I never actually owned this game, only the original and cars 2 on the Wii. Hearing about this anomaly of a game is just so interesting. Thanks for the great video Luke! (Also, from what I remember, the cars 2 game was pretty fun, I should play it again sometime)

26:09 my headcannon is that it’s the same old town from Time Travel Mater/Stanley’s Oasis. As that town was made closer to Tailfin pass which was told through Cars Land and the location of the town in the short.
After Luke came back from Wales, he hopped on a Discord call, and began playing Ramones Rhythmic Rumble. For at least an hour, myself, ThomasandTugsman, LJ and Percy66_c tried our damndest to figure out why the game kept freezing up during the final level to no avail. I’ll never forget how pissed we all got each time the game froze.
Maybe the PS2 wasn’t powerful enough to handle it? It is essentially a less powerful Wii. That same type of frustration happened to me when I tried out the GameCube version of Cars the Video Game. There were instances on Menu screens or during Pit Stops on Piston Cup races where for some reason, some of my inputs just *would not* register whatsoever. So I was pretty much stuck on parts and couldn’t do anything without quitting.
getting flashbacks of me playing Mater's Tall Tales for the wii cause they didn't have mater-national... thank god you covered it, Luke. I'd love to see some more cars content from ya.
As a Pole, I will mention the Polish version. In the cutscenes we have a narrator. In the 1st relay of Luigi and Guido, the narrator does not understand what he is reading, which is why one may get the impression that Giovani says: "My name is Zygzak" (Zygzak is Lightning in the Polish version).
The best part of Cars Hi-Octane is that during its lifespan, until July of 2018, were added tons of new characters, paint jobs and tracks from both the Cars 2 and Cars 3 games. It is really the CTGP (Custom Track Grand Prix) of Cars
First of all, Race O Rama is absolutely an improvement, so don’t be too worried, even the world maps are far better Second, as someone who’s tried the mod for Mater National, it doesn’t actually work my pc that much harder than running the game regularly does, maybe a little bit more but not much that I noticed, I reckon if you can manage to run the base game on your PC then maybe give it a try for a few minutes at least just to see how your PC handles it without risking damaging it too much Thirdly, I and many others I’m sure apologise for making you experience this game again, I think we all agree the first and third games are best so this one is just kind of a necessary evil to get to the good stuff
Great review. I remember playing the Wii version a lot as a kid, but when I went back to play it a month ago, it didn't hold up. The only things it has going for it (in my option) is having "Life Is A Highway" in the soundtrack and voice acting by both the returning cast members like Larry the Cable Guy, the replacements like Keith Ferguson or the actors for the new characters like Dee Bradly Baker as Otto. Also, fun fact, Corey Burton (Doc's voice in this game and Race-O-Rama) was the original voice of Shockwave and Spike in Transformers, and is also the current voice of Captain Hook in Disney's Peter Pan franchise.
The main theme of Radiator Springs and its remix have become my new background music when I go for walks or try to calm myself when playing Smash Bros. I've listened to them endlessly this summer
58:05 The reason why they're not randomized in Arcade is because the PS2 version just simply removed the feature, or rather most of it, the other versions on the other hand still has it intact though. (I.E PC, Xbox 360, PS3 & Wii) 1:07:46 The newest version for High-Octane is still being worked on at the moment, so it's not out yet, you can however try out the 1.9.2.3 version that's been out for 6 years. Great video however! I quite enjoyed watching it.
I respect your opinion but I personally liked Mater-National Championship because I thought it was an overall fun game despite its problems. I also think it’s better than Cars 2 in terms of consistency.
I grew up with the original Cars game on the Wii and DS. I have lost the Wii disc, unfortunately. I also grew up with Race O Rama with the Wii. However, I never had this game, so it’s kind of an enigma to me. I didn’t even know it existed until I had had Race’O’Rama for a decade. I am looking forward to your input and experience as I try to wrap my head around this game.
Once again, Amazing work. Only noticing now, that when you’re telling the plot of the game, it sounds like the loose plot of Cars 2, specifically on the World Grand Prix. So, basically the “Mater-National” is like the World Grand Prix, but really different.
I remember being disappointed by this game as a child too. And guess what? It was because I didn't like how closed off the overworld was! But one thing I'll definitely give Mater-National over the first game is that I love how varied the races are. It seems like every race takes place in a totally new location. In contrast to the first game, where the tracks could get a little repetitive after a while. The fact that I can't drive on them normally really does suck, though.
In my opinion, the best parts of Mater-National are: 1) The inclusion of "Life Is A Highway" because it is my favorite song from the whole franchise and 2)Mike and Sulley .Their mini game was and still is very enjoyable, especially the levels with the colored teleporting doors. I wish there were more surprises like this featuring the other Pixar characters who appeared as vehicles during the first movie's end credits.
I remember playing this game on my PS3 and funny enough, I've just got back into playing it a few weeks ago, it was a fun game though there were some tracks I'm not keen on and I always boost in the races to build a bigger gap as possible to win the races, Great review BTW
Well Luke I can tell you one thing about Cars Race O Rama that's pretty interesting VA Tara Strong the voice of Timmy Turner from The Fairly OddParents and Bubbles from the Powerpuff Girls voices one of the new characters in the game.
7:06, can confirm the frustration was real as GameCube was my sole console until 2008, and by then I had moved on to other games and didn’t think to check out Mater-National. I actually didn’t play the console port until a few months back, and was immediately turned off due to the severely cropped world when compared to the one in the first game.
It's sad to see the game could have been better. For how well made the first game was. It's disappointing to see a license game get the shaft. Great video, as always Luke, definitely looking forward to the season 11 review and race o Rama video.
58:25 Completely forgot that you can't drive as Emma in the Rustbucket races. In the DS version (developed by Tantalus Interactive) she is unlockable to race at any track, not just the Rustbucket race... Along with Lizzie!
This game was too short. Cars Race o Rama was better as it felt like there was so much to do and quite a lot of side stuff. MaterNational felt like it was rushed out when it could’ve used more time.
Never have I ever seen a video that incapsulates my feelings on Cars: Maternational Championship better than this one. Great review once again, Luke! I don’t have much to say because you’ve pretty much already said everything *for* me lol. The game is so empty that even I can’t come up with more things to say about it. It’s the literal definition of “licensed game”. it’s still a fun racing game, albeit a little janky, but that’s purely because of it reusing the skeleton of the first game. So, like you said in the video, I’d just advise to play the first game over this. Now, Race-O-Rama on the other hand, I think does a MUCH better job at following-up the first game. See you for that review. ;)
I played the hell out of this game as a kid, since I had this game from the first 3 Cars games. Unfortunately I only gotten through the beginning of the game and got stuck on some of the mini games such as Filmores, Ramones, and Doc and Sheriffs Chase. I will say that I owned the GBA version of this game back then and while it isn't too particularly interesting as a game on it's own, it is actually pretty noteworthy as one of the few GBA with 'full 3D' environments using the same engine as Top Gear Rally on the system. It isn't anything mindblowing or anything, but it is pretty novel for that alone (and honestly better than the GBA version of Cars 1 even if that isn't the case for the console versions lol)
yea Im really bummed out that you couldn't explore the new areas in this game in a free roam manner. Only way to is to get the PC version, then get the hi-octane or superdrive mod, and then edit the scenes from RS_A, OV_A, and TF_A to their B and C variants which houses the other road races. For most of them, you have to edit the collision of mcqueen cause he either unicycles or he just falls through the map. Radiator Springs was the most forgiving. Each road race in the game (the main 3 for each location) is part of of its own scene which is really odd to me. Thankfully, the hi-octane / superdrive mod also has the video game Radiator springs scenes which are simply RS, OV, and TF I think but doing so means no NPC's will drive around in the non-Mater National segments of the maps. Btw there are videos that have done quite a number of exploration videos of mater national's locked areas in free roam too. Speaking of which the upper mine town, I have no idea about its backstory either. The upper mine and canyon run races though got me thinking if they are near the border of tailfin pass and cadillac range or not.
Great video, it's been great hearing you talk about these cars games. It's shame how much of a downgrade this one seems from the original. Mater deserves better. I would love to hear you eventually cover Driven to Win. If you want to of course
The PS3 version is even worse, because Gudmund does not control greatly in this version compared to the other console versions and the PC version. An additional plus is that unless you're running the game at 1080p, Mater would immediately brake to a halt in front of the next target, making Ghosting Mater impossible to beat.
Awesome review. Man, this game though, it seems more like a huge downgrade to what came before it. I agree with all the criticisms, especially with the repetitive stuff. What really gets me, is that you can't even go to the next level in the mini-games. It wouldn't hurt to have a next button after a level is complete, like other games. Also, huge respect to you for not giving up in winning those harder races. 57 minutes? i wouldn't do it.

In all honesty, i still think Mater-National is quite solid, but definitely the worst of the original 3. I think its the most replayable conisdering how fast you can finish the game, especially if you only shoot for the required races. Ive probably 100%'d this game's story like... 15 times? I quite like all the side content, but i usually turn fuel frenzys down to rookie mode so theres only 2 laps, theyre definitely the worst part of the game. I also think the incinerator versions of the game are much better in terms of character models and visuals so its a slightly better experience. Everything else though, i think you touched on excellently. If at all possible, id recommend playing the ps3, x360, or wii versions of the next game, since unfortunately the PS2 version gets the short end of the stick (altho its still playable)

Wanna know something funny? My first Xbox 360 I ever played was Sonic 06 lol
@@usualblokelukenow that’s comedy right there lol
nascar 08 and 09 on the ps3 are 2 games you might want to look into, they're both horrible.
