Here's how to play the song "Movies" by Alien Ant Farm. The song is in the Key of E Major. fairly simple to play for intermediate and advance players. Email me if you have any questions. tyezamoramusic@gmail.com
Anthology was the first album i bought with my own money at age 12, and coincidentally bass guitar was the first instrument i learned. as a 14 year old, i learned a lot of my beginnings of music from your band. always a fan of yours Tye. love these videos.
"The C adds a little tension, not a big deal", I think it's a very big deal and adds much more to the E/root resolve and makes it more satisfying. Honestly, it's very clever and that level of writing/contributing is very hard to teach (when to "break the music rules"). You said "Sea is on the g-string", I know exactly what you're talking about. She dances in Key West FL at the Red Garter, very talented women. I had no idea you had a YT channel, instant sub.
ive seen dudes jam on five and six string basses before... but the first time i had ever seen AAF back sometime in 2000-2001 this man was thrashing around one like it was nothing. i was super stoked to see such a large instrument being totally ravaged and still being played with so much articulation accuracy and precision. it was super boss. thanks for being way rad and making killer jams :)
Hey Tye, not sure how often you check these comments. First off, I wanted to say thank you for uploading this, along with your other videos. I didn't expect to see the bass man himself showing how it's played! Secondly dude, I just want to say thank you for inspiring me. Thanks for putting soul into your playing. The part in the chorus, where it goes from the A to C. That part ALWAYS got me. This song came out when I was 10, when I was only just starting to learn guitar and bass. I couldn't appreciate musically what was happening, but the way you described it was how it made me feel, and even now, 15 years on, it still gets me. Now of course, I can understand what you were doing musically, and that has helped so much with writing my own music and setting the sort of tone/feel for what I'm writing. Thanks Tye!
My apologies for just now finding this. I had the pleasure of seeing you at A1A in Lexington KY and, you are one of the best bass players I've ever seen live! You did, what I call, finger picking, picking, and, slap bass. It was awesome!! I hope you are doing well!!
I love you for making this video, Tye. The subtleties really give the song an intellectual sound you don't hear in pop music anymore. From the song arrangement to the guitar acting only as support to everything else.. you really put this track in the top tier of its time. Really appreciate it man.
same here. He should have introduced himself in first five seconds and would probably triple his views. People probably turn it off thinking it just the average schmuck.
this fucked with me for years trying to find the right bass cover for this song since like 2009 .finally i got the man himself to prove what ive been hearing all along. you da man tye !
Your live rig back from the late 90s was the best sounding rig I had ever heard man. That sm900 and that carvin. You inspired me in a lot of ways brotha. Thank you for all you guys did for me. I still remember Dryden getting his dreads stuck in the spider webs lol.
I remember when i was a kid and this song came out, I knew nothing about bass and kept wondering what that awesome sound was in the track and it was the bass. One of the reason I'm a bass player today,
How did I miss this channel? Tye, I’ve been playing bass since the early 90’s. As soon as I heard you play nearly 20 years ago I realized I knew next to nothing about playing it and this video only confirms that. I picked up so many little tips here, Thanks! 😎
highly appreciated Tye! Actually giving back to your fans the best thing, which is you'll's music, something never seen with other musicians. My favorite song, favorite bass line! AAF!
Hey, Tye! For what it's worth: you were Alien Ant Farm to me, man. The side-lined front-man. You have a gift, bro. I hate that video didn't get you on camera more often. I think that, even though videos show you singing, while you play, they should have had an on-stage prop mic, so that people could gather that you are also the voice of AAF too. You F'ng rock that bass guitar, homie. And the vox!!! God bless you, man. Also: there is a town, in NorCal called "Zamora", less than 10 miles from where I grew up, with the whopping population of 770!!! =D
yeah but your no Brian bozarth , your his God he he he . ty what's the name of your new band , and do you have any shows in O.C. can't stand a lot of riverside or mo valley , p.s. thanx for the primus cover band thing , if that didn't happen then aaf doesn't happen and lets face it brother vibe was great at high school parties. (i.e back yards , UC riv. the barn) where there was always drunk brawls , but that was good when I was 16 - 19 yrs old and living in riverside or moreno valley ,where I and the majority of every one was violent and angry . I still wander if people from those days still act that way , or like me got out of that area as soon as I possibly could, grew out of that . nuff drunk rambling for me. I'm glad to see their playing shows , by the way is that Justin from "out of order" playing bass with them now cuz it reminds me of that time that terry left and their was that fill in guy from spider works or some other riverside band. I would love to check out your new band if your playing. in O.C. I don't care much for shows la or riverside, ya know like a brother vibe show ,I'm too old and a lot less angrier but still enjoy the booze. time to pass out I'm so drunk I wonder if ill remember this when i come to
Love your playing brotha. Thanks for all the good tunes. I swear your expressions in 'These days' on the roof just crack me up. You have an awesomely expressive face. :)
Wow ! Dude, the baseline for this song is soooooo friggin sick. Like adddddss Soooooooo much. It's a pump man. Sick groove. The timing too is SICK. Ahhhh man I cannot believe I found you man ! U rock and thank you for making this song with AAf!
Thanks Tye. I knew I heard what you were playing, but I drove my self crazy looking for a bass cover that got what you did during the verse (1:20) and could never find one that played your part. Still one of the greatest bass riffs out there
That out-of-key "tension" approach is new for me, I'm a self-taught bassist who's been playing for 15 years... A proper education goes a long way haha But thank you, sensei!
HAAA! Fantastic! finally a channel on youtube! I searched for years anything related to you! and finally a channel THAT IS A DREAM! you the best bass lines of the 90s! you are a master of the bass! ! thank you for allowing this closeness through this channel! Thx ThxThxThxThxThxThxThx
TH]he whole "Alien Ant Farm" thing was great. I saw you live on the "MadTV" show, and you are just super tight. One of the best bassists I have ever seen. I love the mixing of ridiculous talent with Comedy. Regards, The Late "Mobile Home Boy".
Rad man, thanks tons for posting. I always love to hear other bassists thoughts on technique and style. I love the Carvin, that figured maple fretboard is beautiful. Keep the videos coming!
I remember seeing the video for Movies and although it was a good song it was really Tye with his 6 string bass that made me think... I think these guys can really play!
Dude you guys were the first band I ever seen live at the glass house in Pomona with papa roach and glassjaw...still gives me goosebumps thinking about those shows bro‼️‼️🤘🏼😎🤘🏼‼️‼️
I love this guy’s playing. Clearly knows his shit about music theory, but the space he gives in the verses of the song and using those low-E’s to accent the kick drum is great. Also for the longest time I assumed he was playing straight 16ths with his right hand on those chromatic descent, but nope. And throwing that C in the chorus was (chef’s kiss).
Oh my god! I had no idea you have a TH-cam channel! I always thought you were such a cool guy and wanted to know more about you. This is awesome I’m finding you now, although late. This is an older video. But I hope you do more videos. If you already have, I apologize, I haven’t checked your other videos yet. Nice seeing you after all these years!
in 2001 i found out about this song on Mtv right after smooth criminal and fell in love with what you guys wrote..in went straight to Tower Records and buy the Anthology cd :) still awesome until today plus other previous releases of AAF..hope to see u guys touring asia ;)
thanks for doing all this videos for us its awesome of you, you are awesome bassist aswell its been fun learning loads of AAFs songs ur lines r so fun to play.
Tye, you're one of the best bassists in popular music (not 'pop music' as it says today) that today exists. something like 4-5yrs ago i realised that ( i'm sorry ;_;) Kazaa'd first album of AAF put so much feel and groove to bass from you. i've listened this album maybe once or twice but few years ago i realised that somehow almost your licks (after ~10yrs playing bass back then). i still love your playing and i would like as much of your material as you can do. subbed and belled to have any info on your CD releases in the future (now when i'm adult i can buy physical CD to shine on my shelf ;P).
I knew as soon as I heard this song so much good shit went into the writing/recording of it. I didn’t grow up with this music either I found it later and really love this song. Great lesson
Wow I am so glad I ended up here, I was googling what kind of bass you played in the movies vid, cuz it looked alot like my warwick! But I am now obsessed w your explanation of this song, because I could NEVER ever fucking figure it out, I knew you were doing something moody/off-key enough to give me an emotional/physical reaction even when I was a kid and didn’t understand music theory?? You're MAGIC. And such an inspiration ❤️ (Also my childhood crush😻🙃)
This song makes me emotional for some reason, Ive always wondered what it was exactly that gave me that feeling.. now I know its your doing!!!! Something about this bassline makes the whole song feel like the ending credits of a coming of age movie☠️☠️☠️☠️ It’s sentimental somehow. You’re nuts dude!!!!! 😻😻😻😻❤️
I'll have to show this to my bro! And fingers crossed Mike will break down the drum line to Rubber Mallet one of these days (no pun intended). Any plans to play in the UK? You guys have been on my 'need to see list' for a long time!
Your chromatic walkdown is awesome man, it MAKES the song. I always thought you were doubling on the E, not fretting a chord on the A. Thanks for showing us how to get it right. I notice you're tone dampening at the nut / headstock too, was it like that on the recording?
this bass player is way up there with cliff burton the first bass player of metallica before jason newstead.. you sir kick ass and don't let anyone else tell the other way.
Sorry. Right now I'm using these older Bose computer speakers and they only go so loud. My studio monitors are in L.A. right now and I will be bringing them back to Boston when I'm back on the 17th of December. That should fix the problem.

This music and this baseline touch my heart since the early 2000's.... God bless Tye!!!! ❤
First time I heard Alien Ant Farm, the firs thing I noticed was the bass. Awesome work man.
Same
Love his facial expressions in the AAF videos
dude - you're an icon homie. Your bass line have inspired me for over a decade.
Anthology was the first album i bought with my own money at age 12, and coincidentally bass guitar was the first instrument i learned. as a 14 year old, i learned a lot of my beginnings of music from your band. always a fan of yours Tye. love these videos.

Cool as fuck to hear it explained by the actual musician..... A +!!!!!
Tye, you're a model to all the bass players out there!
AAF was very lucky to have this incredible bass player. No wonder Robert Deleo was on board to produce TruAnt.
Best pop song of the 21st century, and I'll die on that hill.
ive seen dudes jam on five and six string basses before... but the first time i had ever seen AAF back sometime in 2000-2001 this man was thrashing around one like it was nothing. i was super stoked to see such a large instrument being totally ravaged and still being played with so much articulation accuracy and precision. it was super boss. thanks for being way rad and making killer jams :)

it costed me almost 3 minutes to realise it's THE ACTUAL BASSPLAYER OF AAF.
same here. He should have introduced himself in first five seconds and would probably triple his views. People probably turn it off thinking it just the average schmuck.
@Jose RIP UK :)
Couldn't you see it? 😂
Must be stupid then
At the time the video came out he hadn’t rejoined the band
not a musician but when i heard the chorus it was sooo good. i think you described it perfectly 'floating'
this fucked with me for years trying to find the right bass cover for this song since like 2009 .finally i got the man himself to prove what ive been hearing all along. you da man tye !
Tye Zamora, the Bassist, was on point. As was the security : )
Tye, I’m a big fan also from Riverside. I play bass but certainly not at your caliber. Thanks for having this TH-cam page. It is great!
Thanks Chuck
Your live rig back from the late 90s was the best sounding rig I had ever heard man. That sm900 and that carvin. You inspired me in a lot of ways brotha. Thank you for all you guys did for me. I still remember Dryden getting his dreads stuck in the spider webs lol.

loved the ending flamboyant riff,, always like these chord structures with the tension that resolves itself
The dance moves you do in the video are really cool! Also great back ground vocals and of course top notch bass line!
I remember this from years ago and I'm back again!
I love watching this after listening to the finished song. I love that bit of slap bass you do!
How did I miss this channel? Tye, I’ve been playing bass since the early 90’s. As soon as I heard you play nearly 20 years ago I realized I knew next to nothing about playing it and this video only confirms that. I picked up so many little tips here, Thanks! 😎

Tye Zamora is a great bassist. I love the bassist! You, along with Mark Hoppus and John Cooper, are my favorite bassists.

The song “movies”has one of the best bass lines in music made after 1999! It rivals “strong all along” and “come original” by 311...my favorite band!
Love your bass playing. Youre one of my top ten favorite bassists. Probably top 5.
I know this is about bass, but your physical presence in the videos is captivating, especially when you busted some dance moves
Thanks Tye. I knew I heard what you were playing, but I drove my self crazy looking for a bass cover that got what you did during the verse (1:20) and could never find one that played your part. Still one of the greatest bass riffs out there
Wow, awesome of you to post your parts! Thanks!
seen a lot of bassist, but you're the most charismatic of them all ever, period :)
This is excellent stuff. You're doing it formally with the music theory yet so casually with the licks. Can't wait to hear more!
That out-of-key "tension" approach is new for me, I'm a self-taught bassist who's been playing for 15 years... A proper education goes a long way haha But thank you, sensei!

Hey man, appreciate the time you put in to all these play alongs and break-downs. Cheers.
I remember seeing the video for Movies and although it was a good song it was really Tye with his 6 string bass that made me think... I think these guys can really play!
Funniest bass dude ever
Totally awesome, really well explained, love your playing style.
Thanks Stuart Barker for pointing me this way - looking forward to some more vids.

This is such a great bassline and you are a such f****** great bassist. Thank you.
just wanted to say thank you, I play a five string and every band ever plays four, so its always awsome to find a song that uses the 5th string
Very underrated bass player. Great video Tye

Great stuff, Tye. Never apologize for the chromatic runs/slides. It only adds to your abundance of charm.
I saw you guys open for Taproot and Linkin Park in Roseland Ball Room in NYC. You blew both those bands away.
Fantastic band
Just found this guy's channel. He has videos of him explaining and showing how to play a bunch of his songs. Holy fuck, he's cool.
You're an awesome bassist. I've been an AAA fan since 2001
this bass line has always been premium
Any chance of you rejoining AAF? Are you still cool with them? Miss ya on the new music.
I'll have to show this to my bro! And fingers crossed Mike will break down the drum line to Rubber Mallet one of these days (no pun intended). Any plans to play in the UK? You guys have been on my 'need to see list' for a long time!
You are fuckimg awesome man. Hope youre doing well! It was fun watching you do your goofy dances and your whoo!
I like your style keep on! ;)
"Movies" is my favorite. Thanks !
Love the bass lines in AAF. It's the main reason to listen to them.
Tye!
Saludos desde Monte Grande, Argentina!

Genial!
De donde sos?
La Plata, Buenos Aires. De hecho hoy justo hacia un cover de esta cancion por el aniversario de uno de mis bajos hahaha
Come back we miss you A.A.F
That slapping was clean
Sharp minor, flat 3 , attention chord. Music theory on this is solid. Misses a lot of the new bands out there
i'm so glad you're doing this! thank you very much!
thanks for showing us this, helps with inspiration
Holy shit this is great what a genuine soul
What was your favorite part of shooting the music video for this track? Thanks for the vid man, huge fan.
Your chromatic walkdown is awesome man, it MAKES the song. I always thought you were doubling on the E, not fretting a chord on the A. Thanks for showing us how to get it right. I notice you're tone dampening at the nut / headstock too, was it like that on the recording?
No it wasn't
I wonder if he ever realized that he was the reason people really listened to this song.
more musicians should do this!! Thx man!
I know exactly what you mean regarding the chorus tension and release. When Terry plays the E it sounds amazing with the Gsharp.
You were a stand out for sure
Cool lesson! It looks like you can play this entire song on a 4-string bass, since it doesn't use the low B string.
this bass player is way up there with cliff burton the first bass player of metallica before jason newstead.. you sir kick ass and don't let anyone else tell the other way.
Nice video !!!!
Thank you so much for this tutorial!
Killer! Would love to have the bass louder somehow....thanks so much for the cover!
Sorry. Right now I'm using these older Bose computer speakers and they only go so loud. My studio monitors are in L.A. right now and I will be bringing them back to Boston when I'm back on the 17th of December. That should fix the problem.
Thanks much for replying - I'm a drummer learning to play bass, but your playing has been influential to a lot of my friends playing (and my own)...so groovy and pfatt :) Cheers from Serbia
THE Bob Ross of bass guitar.
Do you ever you use harmonics
Yes he did. Listen to "Flesh and Bone"
Cool video Brother! Nice to see you use my PB bass, nice!
Appreciate you 🙏🏽🖤
tye please do flash and bone...btw this is great ...you are awesome bass player :D
