MORE 1950s in Color - Life in America

  • The 1950s is a decade many look back upon warmly - and with good reason. Our country had recently come out victorious and relatively intact following World War II. The outlook was hopeful and optimistic as people looked forward to brighter days ahead. The cars were beautiful and the people were enthusiastic and hard-working. They took pride in their country, their work, and the way they presented themselves to the world.
With modern society today seemingly flipped on its head - it's nice to take a look back and remember the times before everything got so crazy.
Thanks for watching - I hope you enjoy this brief trip back in time to the 1950s!

Being born in 1945, I grew up in Northern California in the 50's. Graduating high school in 1963. All these photos resemble every town. It just feels like yesterday. So happy, so carefree. All the memories come crashing back. How wonderful it all was. I was so very lucky. I know that even then, not every kid was as lucky as I was. Now, after turning 78, I look back wondering, how could it have gone by so fast ? I wish I could do it all over again ! Thanks for your videos!

      I'm 77, graduated in '63 also & loved the '50's too! But, through movies & t.v. shows,
of that era, I think that we may be 'romanticizing' that decade, too much! Don't forget
the Korean War; the "Red Scare", possible Atomic War,etc.! Living in N. Calif., you may
have experienced the 1950's experience, more than most! (Bring back "Happy Days"!)

Yes, it was wonderful to live back then and the future seemed bright - as long as your skin had the right color and you can forget about the everlasting fear of an atomic World War. Well, I AM white and never thought much of a possible war back then - so the time for me was just as wonderful as the pictures make me feel today. Though, one should not forget that the times were only wonderful if you were white and had enough money to be part of the American Dream - which is lost today in today’s Divided States of America ruled by hate and the total lack of political culture caused by the once “Grand” Ol’ Party.

Amazing, until you remember things like
      - leaded gasoline
      - lead paint
      - asbestos everywhere
      - generally horrible air, water and ground pollution in any big city
      - primitive healthcare by modern standards, with no treatment for illnesses that can be treated these days
      - mental problems caused by WWII left untreated, causing great problems
      - lack of standards for many things like hygiene and construction
      - a survivable car accident today could easily kill you back then
      - cars had terrible fuel economy
      - cars were much less reliable and rusted out fast
      - flying was prohibitively expensive for a majority of the people
      - mobile phones of any kind were pure science fiction
      - no internet or GPS to help you find your way if you're lost
      - no consumer electronics

The kids today grow up in such bizarre surroundings. How wonderful it was to play baseball in the street. Sometimes the drivers would wait until the batter had his turn hitting or striking out. The neighborhood store sold candy, lunchmeat, fresh bread and other goodies. People did not walk in front of cars until it was their turn, and when crossing there was a hurry up movement in their step. We watched our language and respected older people. Not perfect, but better then in every way.

Good job. It did cut out Rich Williams when you zoomed in. I mention him because he is still alive in northern California, last of the breed.

Thanks for this beautiful video of a beautiful in my life. We didn't know how good we had it.

Thanks for your comment - and for the great list of old TV shows. Honestly, I hadn't heard of many of these. Maybe I can put together a video with mentions and shots of some of these old shows. I"m glad you liked the video, and that it reminded you of some good memories. I'm really glad to know that!

@@TheHistoryLounge. Thank you for your reply. And as far as being a Teenager in the 50'S went. Well, here is some good truth. I have three older Brothers who were Teenagers a while before myself. And that makes me the youngest Child raised in a strict old School Italian household. And as far as that STUPID show called Happy Days goes. Well, it was nothing like that at all. We grew up in Little Italy in Washington, D.C. And no, we did not have any bad ass Fonzie's walking around like they were really something. Now I will explain the rest some other time. Now as for the great old TV shows we loved there are so many that I still remember, but it would take a long time and spoil all the fun. Well, here are just a few more from the great old days of great TV. Dick Powells Zane Grey theater, Circus Boy, The adventures of Jim Bowie, Broken Arrow, The Joseph Cotton show, Wire Service, Waterfront, Riverboat, Dragnet, Mandrake the Magician, International Theater, The life of Riley, I've got a secret (gameshow), The Eddie Fisher show, MGM Parade, Circus Time, Line up, Decoy, The George Gobel show, American Bandstand, The Betty Hutton show, The Gail Storm show, The Loretta Young show, The Deena Clark show, The Gisele McKenzie show, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Sky King, The Honeymooners, The Untouchables, One Mans Family, MGM Parade, The Wednesday night fights, Gunsmoke, The adventures of Sir Lancelot (British), The Buccaneers (British), Club Oasis, I married Joan, My little Margie, Public Defender, Racket Squad (LAPD), Public Prosecutor, The Californians, The cases of Eddie Drake, The flying Doctor (British), Suzie private Secretary, The Ann Southern show, The Donna Reed show, Rescue 8, Love of life, 77 Sunset Strip, CBS Sunday evening Mystery theater, The Debby Drake show, Casey, crime photographer, The Detectives, The DA'S Man, Front page Detective, Highway Patrol, I'm the Law, Jimmy Hughes, Rookie Cop, Man against crime and Martin Kane Private I. Well, there are many more and I hope this helps. Now if there is anyone from my generation who is still around, if you remember will you please reply? Thanks again.

@@DavidFrehlini-y1y Not sure why you zeroed in on Happy Days as stupid...you realize it was JUST a TV show, don'tcha? Maybe there were no wiseguys in D.C.'s Little Italy, not that the Fonz was by any stretch a wiseguy, but there certainly were in NYC's. Maybe these videos need a sprinkle of the reality of mob hits (descriptive headlines, articles, and graphic pictures of mobsters lying in a pool of blood after getting machine-gunned out of his barber's chair while he was getting a shave) to get everyone out of nostalgic dreams that life was so perfect "back then", whichever "back then" tickles your fancy. The intros are important. The vids are great. The photos, however, have a tendency to whitewash whatever decade(s) is being highlighted. I often wonder whose photos are being used...personal collection, stock library...because unless something negative is being highlighted (war, accidents, etc.) there seems to be total omissions of those negatives.

@@brucestaples4510. Good morning from Palermo Sicilia. Actually, I was talking about some of the older Kids walking around acting like bad assess and trying to impress the Young Ladies. And we were not allowed to stop off at the local Burger Joint on the way Home from School. We came straight Home. And whatever else. But as for the real Wise Guys. Well, yes. They were there, and what you mentioned about the Mob Hits. Oh yes. I was around when all of that was going on, and I still remember when Joseph Valachi testified on TV. And I still remember the Anastasia hit, and yes, he was blown out of the Barber's chair. As a matter fact, that was the top story, front page news for the Washington Star and Daily news. And I am sure everyone from back then who is still around can remember. And to be honest our Little Italy was the safest Neighborhood in the District of Columbia. Well, you take care and have a great morning. God Bless.

I totally agree with you that those times were amazing. But the cars: Great looks and wonderful engines - roadholding and brakes? Hmm, not just impressive. And you wouldn’t have wanted to be in them in an accident as safety didn’t matter at all. There’s a shocking crash test on You Tube: A beautiful ‘59 Chevy Impala against a boring Malibu: You would have died in the Impala and get out of the Malibu - maybe with some minor bruises. Buyers back then just didn’t care about safety - neither did automakers.
