There were large protests over the trails being too lenient, in the eyes of the vast majority of people. Many Liberal European journalists agreed. The trails came to be known as the ‘Nuremberg of Cuba’ for the obvious guilt and the gravity of the crimes. For example, one of the people who was executed used to have peasants abducted and would watch as they were lit on fire. He did this hundreds of times. In Cuba, he was simply known as the ‘torturer of the peasants’. Castro first wanted to give the guy clemency but changed his mind after protests against it. He respected the decisions of the trails. And, as we see here, came to defend them. In what way did he go south?
