Garlic Chives (Allium tuberosum) are much easier to grow than Chives (Allium schoenoprasum) and give 'ya that garlic 'pop' (flavor). be CAREFUL about self-seeding, however.
throughout Asia & China specifically, the flowering stems are harvested BEFORE the flower opens. the stems & flower head make a tasty veggie meal.

I LOVE the flowerheads once the seed pod has developed, so intensely hot-garlicky, crispy-juicy. fabulous in anything.

My Aunt told me one thing she loved to eat as a small girl in China was the flowering garlic chive... where she said the flowering heads (only) were gathered, washed and ground up into a paste with some salt to season it.
😅 That how to take care of the problem of it takeing over everything.

Looking at those root systems make me think garlic chives would be a great cover crop for overwintering and also for breaking up my hard clay soil. Interesting video. Thanks.

Garlic Chives are bullet-proof plants here in zone 7. VIGOUROUS self-seeder; HEAVY seeds so they'll drop near the Mama plant -- just a fyi.

i love chives from when i was a kid my mom would tell me to get some from our backyard bushel. she would put them in spaghetti. they seemed quite strong to me then. i like the idea of even stronger never give up garlic flavored chives 😁😁 we were semi desert with deep winters and that guy kept coming back. maybe it was garlic chive all along? 🤔

Pre-bloom garlic chive stalks are sooooo tasty in a stir fry. Chuck in some green beans and it’s just 😙👌🏽. Have quite a sweet flavour to it, not spicy like actual garlic.

What amazes me is...even though there are various types of wild onion/chives/garlic growing in this region nobody ever started them in this area. I haven`t located a single example. My half sister`s folks never planted fruit trees around here either. That explains her and my nephew hating fruit. Just bizarre people.

I bought 7 different types of potting soil last year. All of them were toxic and I wasted my money on a variety pack of these types of chives, regular chives, spring and bulbing onions and a lot of others. They must have sold it deliberately since there seems to be a coordinated plan to wipe out home farmers. I tested one bag I saved recently and the PH was well over 8 and I corrected it with pure acid. So that explains that one. It was "organic." Miracle Gro killed everything too which was very surprising and I dumped it all. I`m making my own now from forest soil.

    • @heppylifestyle
      @heppylifestyle  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

sorry to hear that; yes, natural soil is exceptional.
and, i SUSPECT (but can't verify at this point) that the genus Allium don't need high or medium types of organic soil. Garlic Chives thrive in it but they thrive growing on the top of a car ;)
i'm beginning to plant Alliums in sandy-loam soils. soil that's under my feet ;)
      good luck!

I just ordered regular Chive seeds again. They`re charging insane prices for Garlic Chive and I`ve been scammed way too many times to fall for it again. Same with Walking Onions. I just won`t be growing them. Not getting ripped off again. No way! @@heppylifestyle

    Garlic chives are chives.
There are 2 types of chives, Garlic chives and onion chives.
    Both are chives.
