This 70 year old white guy grew up on Motown, classic rock, in college on prog rock, later even disco...and it took a genius young English rapper, with a special shout out all the fantastic TH-cam reactors to help me understand and truly appreciate just how creative and talented rappers/hip hop artists truly are!
Thanks to you, Ren, and to all the talented and insightful reactors, who explained the beauty of the art of this poetry and art! I also appreciate the reactors who are reviewing the music of my earlier life. It brings me pure joy to see young people appreciating the music of my youth for the first time!

Tidbits from barrington levy's "murderer", damian marleys "welcome to jamrock", dr.dre's "the next episode" and ini kamozes "world a music (out in the streets they call it merther)" that is a sample on welcome to jamrock in there. Filmed in Los Angeles 3 days ago.
Fun fact: "Merther" is basically the term for listening to reggae while smoking weed. The "merging" of it.

Here's the salutes that I picked up on when Ren nods to his musical influences. Ren's giving homage to Barrington Levy & also Damian Marley's "Welcome To Jamrock" in his new opening (In the streets they call it MURDER) . Ren also gives homage to Dr. Dre with the guitar riff Dre's "Next Episode" ft. Snoop Dog. Also, Ren's guitar solo was an homage to another one of Ren's musical influences Django Reinhardt. Reinhardt was probibly one of the most famous Jazz guitarist who; if I'm not mistaken, was actually the 1st person to bring Jazz to the UK. In my humble opinion, that was very much a 30-40's Jazz riff reminiscent of Reinhardt's music. 💖 Cheers ✌✌😁

In the bar before the one about coming from Brighton he also drops that he wore clothes from Oxfam. Oxfam isn't really a thing in the states, but it's basically the equivalent of Goodwill or Salvation Army so again he's telling you about where he's from and how he grew up.

To answer your question, I'm going to recommend Love Music 1 and 2, but you'll likely do that series before the release of part 4 next week. There's a lot of Ren's humour in there, and a feel of who he is and where he's coming from. I think that's what you're asking for, rather than a song that tells you a narrative story about it and his life.

    • @icyravens
      @icyravens ปีที่แล้ว +3

100% this! Love Music Part 4 is dropping next week, and if it's something you might want to jump on early you'll want to do the first three for sure (in order! They show a progression in style and skill, too, spanning 10-odd years.)
The first one was written before he got sick and it's all about his wide-eyed optimistic dreams about music. The second and third show more darkness but with a sense of humor. And no, they're not traditional "love songs"... I think some reactors skip over them because of the titles. 😅

Most of Ren’s song teach you a little about who he is as a person and an artist, and some teach you a whole lot. I think Ready for You is another great one for some glimpses into his soul, as well as Genesis.

It's not hip hop, but Ren's song Patience is a heartfelt ballad about his struggle with his sickness back before he was finally diagnosed with Lyme's disease. For me, it's a true glimpse into who he is and the struggle he's been through. Maybe give that one a listen to if you want a glimpse into who he is. But if you do, watch the "Patience Ren Gill M.E" version and not the other ones. Also, Ren's song Crutch ft Bibi, is another one that gives you a look into his struggle. Crutch is also about his health struggles and a bit more dark and painful.

    • @LeeannG

Hip hop to me was like Lisa Lisa and cult Jam. Even that has changed. Ren combines so many genre's. ( like Black Pegasus calls him, THE LAST GENNRE BENDER) He grew up in Wales but lives in Brighton now.

Well Ren taught himself how to play guitar, piano and his other instruments on You tube. He put on Jimmy Hendrick video's and slowed them down till he got it. If you are serious you can do the same. You just need a guitar and after about 10,000 hrs of practice you could be doing the same thing in your live acoustic music videos.

Ren doesn't come in a neat box its easier just to say he is an extremely talented artist.

Fun reaction, love your enthusiasm and intelligence. For more getting to know him, Love Music 1, 2 and 3 (each written 4-5 years apart), Life is Funny, Crucify Your Culture, Dominoes? And you really see his soul and what a wide variety of music HE loves through his Big Push street performances, both covers and originals. "Wade in The Water/Trouble So Hard" is a good one for that.
A lot of the music Ren wrote during his illness is very straightforward (but skilled and poetic and poignant) diary entries; he didn't know if they'd ever see the light of day so he was just writing to help himself get through. This includes Crutch, Patience, Penitence, Insomnia, Depression, Diazepam. Two of my favorites that I'm guessing might ride the line of exposition and musicianship for you are Everybody Drops and Ready For You. I really believe you will find what you're looking for as you travel through his 10+ year catalog, it's just hard to guess which ones will scratch that itch for you. So I'm fascinated to keep watching, seeing which ones elicit that passionate "yes!"!

That is such a cool analogy - when you can write and play music via your fingers, your brain is a super computer.

You’re so right about some of us just learning about hip-hop!!
    I’m closing in on 60!!
Until Kendrick Lamar I hadn’t really given hip-hop any time!!
(Except Rapper’s Delight, which I used to know every word to!!)
I can say I’ve learned a lot but I am still pretty ignorant on the details!
I love the bars and the battle culture!! I love to love of it all!!
This is some Shakespeare stuff put to a beat and I’m all in.
It’s hard for me to listen to rappers who are mean tho…

Have you checked out The Big Push - I shot the Sheriff, Road to Zion, Hip Hop version? Or have you just stuck with his rap so far? Looked over your stuff real quick and didn't see it yet.
