The cool thing about this they weren’t sure the crowd would be able to understand them and when they sang this song back to them in English Queen was blown away.

Heather Cronkhite 💁🏾‍♀️ Just a few yrs prior at the famous Montreal '81 concert, the mostly English speakin' [there may have been some French speakin] fans didn't know the song in it's entirity. Freddie was taken aback 'n said to Bri: "They don't know it!" to which Bri said: "That's alright.".
I believe Queen were also blown away at the Argentina '81 show as well✌🏾.

@@Motown-1966 hahaha At the Montreal show, I thought the reason the audience wasn't singing was because they had been intimidated by the production company into being quiet?!? :D

🙋🏾‍♀️ Hiya Marcella Cumberbatch 💁🏾‍♀️ That's a good point but I'm only goin' off of what Freddie said to Bri 'n his response. You may be right 'bout the security intimidation. That's why Freddie was frustrated 'n told the crowd to get up...that they could take their clothes off✌🏾!

@@Motown-1966 And São Paulo, too. In this show, in Rio, Queen members were already aware of what the audience would be like.
The concerts in Brazil and Argentina (1981) were, without a doubt, the differential for the band.
In fact, Rock in Rio '85 only happened because of Queen.
All the other bands had refused to come to Brazil, but the Queen members accepted at the same time, which made all the other artists go back and accept the invitation.

Almost half a million non-English speakers singing to the band and shouting their names.
We all know the importance of this Rock in Rio for us, Brazilian fans.
But, how remarkable must it have been for Freddie and the other Queen members?
It must have been a really magical night.

The most incredible thing is that basically none of the crowd speak english, that moved Freddie and Bryan. They sang for him, that's crazy and emotional we brazilians are.

And after being gone for 28 years he can still get that crowd interaction. Last summer I saw Queen and Adam Lambert at MSG. For this song Brian sat on a stool and sang and played but for the last verse a huge screen of Freddie came on and he was directing and singing the last verse. The entire place sang right along with him! It was great but sad.

I also was at Queen Concert in São Paulo in 1981. Queen is so loved here in Brazil. Love to Brian, Roger and John. And tons to Beloved Freddie tons of love, we miss you so much! RIP Dearest Freddie

Music teacher.."Freddie what instruments do you play?" Freddie "why..the crowd of course!"..imagine 300,000 singing your song..who are not even English. Apparently this almost brought Freddie to tears...its why he had that little break then walked to Brian. He deserved every bit if that love. He still does.

Great insight. Yes, they said in an interview that at a very early performance, the audience serenaded the band with "You Will Never Walk Alone" and they had to just take it all in, and were surprised and stunned. At the time, it was something that just never happened at concerts. They decided then that they wanted to encourage audience participation and Freddie especially loved that. He did love the audience and talked to them as though he was having a conversation with each individual. I think the audience responded because they felt that connection and returned that love. No one has been as charismatic in quite the same way.

    • @geomarierock3061

Audience participation was not really a part of rock and roll concerts when they started. The bands often just played the songs (half the time not even looking at the audience) without any real stage show. Freddie was the master of getting the most out of his audience and was the one who really made them such an entertaining live band. This song was not originally thought of as a participation song. It really was a quiet song to balance out the Night at the Opera album. It kind of took on a life of it's own live over the years (this concert was in the last years they toured). Bingley Hall in 1978 is the concert you were talking about (several years after this song). That concert inspired Brian to write We Will Rock You and Freddie to write We are the Champions. Both songs were meant as audience participation songs (especially We Will Rock You since people could actually play along by stomping and clapping).

Can you imagine what that must have felt like to see that many people singing your song to you and that they didn’t speak English? You should check out Rock and Rio Blues from this same concert! The legend behind this song was that Freddie wrote the song for Mary Austin. I guess that is the story I prefer because it makes it the ultimate love song. And all that I've read about Freddie and mary, their dedication and devotion to each other especially through Freddie's AIDS crisis, really cemented this song in my heart forever.
Love of My Life, sweet, sad, inspiring and just thrilling anytime Freddie led his audience to sing with him

Christie Brown 💁🏾‍♀️ Well you know...accordin' to Feebie (Phoebe)...this was written from the POV of Mary.
That said...the song certainly could've been written with the idea that Freddie would eventually find his way back to her after he'd gotten all of his wild oaths out of him. That they'd be old companions in their golden yrs. It must break her heart to hear this song I would imagine 😞

My favorite version of Love of My Life is the one at Wembley in '86. You've already reacted to a lot of my favorite Queen songs but here are a few more for your list: Save Me from Montreal, It's a Hard Life from Rock in Rio '85, Too Much Love Will Kill You, and Innuendo. Other versions of songs you've already reacted to: Another One Bites the Dust and A Kind of Magic at Wembley from the Friday show and Somebody to Love live at the Bowl. The two at Wembley are my favorite versions. The one at the Bowl is a looser and bluesier version with a more enthusiastic crowd. I think you'll like them.

Freddie's fans knew that they were to sing this song. It was something that got started with that song in particular. Freddie loved his fans and they loved him so much. He was always in command of all his audiences. There were 250,000 people there setting a world record of the biggest paying audience. Can you imagine 250,000 people singing your song to you? It had to have been amazing. you asked for a list of songs you can react too so i looked at your playlist and i have some great ones that may or may not already on your private list for you to get to, so sorry if they have already been requested. I know you said you like interview content and so do I. Here are a few good ones. 1) Freddie Mercury interview with David Wigg in Munich 1985. Just make sure you pick the almost 19 minute one because that interview has also been fragmented on youtube in smaller sections. 2) Freddie Mercury and Dave Clark Time interview 1986, and 3). Freddie Mercury interview 1977. These are three interviews of Freddie at different stages of his life and career. As far as songs go: We will Rock you live, Save me live from Montreal 1981. Now Im Here live Wembley , It's a hard life live in Tokyo 1985, ( Flick of the Wrist and Death on two legs) in that order. they are both dis songs about their first manager who stole money from them. they had three successful albums and tours by then and still barley able to eat or buy a home while the manager was riding around in a new rolls royce. His name was Norman Sheffield. You might want to react to the lyric videos so you can get the full extent of the lyrics and Freddie's anger. Too Much Love will kill you, do the Queen version with Freddie on lyrics. Brian wrote it and also did a video of him singing lead, which is good as well if you would want to do both. Body Language official video and Get Down Make Love live from Montreal 1981. These last few that i can think of right now are from Freddie's solo album, Mr. Bad Guy: I was born to love you, the official video, Living on my own, the official video, Mr. Bad guy (the original 1985 version) not the remixed 1992 one. There is only a lyric video for this but it is such a good song!!, Made in Heaven the official video, Living on my Own, the official video. it has clips from Freddie's famous 39th birthday party in New Orleans which has gone down as one wild party. LOL. and last but not least, Foolin around, official lyric video, another great song. All the songs on Freddie's solo album are great!
Anyway, I do love watching your reactions and i do tell other people about your channel so i hope it grows really fast for you.

Brian! Brian! Brian! ( Just heard that. Lol). There are many speculations about who Freddie was referring to in this song. Mainly for Mary. However, John Reid said that Freddie admitted to him that he wrote it for David Minns, his first known boyfriend. David left Freddie after realizing Freddie and Mary were more than just "friends" living together. Although by this time Freddie was spending more and more time away from their apartment and Mary. Mainly to be with David.
Reference from the book Somebody to Love. But I guess only hearing it straight from
Freddie would we ever know. Although it seems he was always very cheeky when answering questions about his songs. Lol

Love your reactions! Freddie never told anyone what his songs were about or who he wrote them for, if anyone. He always told interviewers that he didn't write them with a certain person in mind, they were just love songs. Brian and Roger say that they never discussed what songs were about or who they were for. The only song I read about being written for someone was Millionaires Waltz which Freddie said was written for their manager John Reid who got them out of debt. Queen loved their fans in a rare way and the fans reacted to it and stood by them. They had a hardcore following from the beginning of their tours. Good thing because the UK and US press dumped on them constantly to the point where Freddie rarely did interviews. Days of Our Lives was the video that you are referring to where Freddie said his last goodbye. Roger wrote it for his children but it took on a new meaning when it became the last video Freddie filmed. You haven't reacted to the official video of You're My Best Friend or the Live at the Bowl 1982 version of Fat Bottomed Girls, or the Top of the Pops version of Killer Queen.

There are others but I can't remember off the top of my head but this is according to David himself in his biograhical book 'bout Freddie called: "This Was the Real Life." The other song Freddie wrote, “It’s a Hard Life” was ‘bout his relationship with Winnie Kirchberger in Munich✌🏾.

Definite proof that Queen and their music had (and still does) has an almost magical effect on people and the soul! Brian May still sings this song solo in honor of Freddie and encourages the crowd to join in. He'd say "don't be shy" and also encourage everyone to get out their iphone lights reminiscent of back in the day when people held lighters. Near the end, a video of Freddie from the Wembley 1986 concert appears on a screen and sings the last part. Almost after every time, Brian would be seen wiping away a tear in honor of his friend and brother in arms and probably so touched that people still go nuts for Queen. Before writing "Days of our lives" other songs they wrote for their fans specifically are Teo Toriatte (for Japan) and Las Palabras de amores (for Latin America).

How Can I Go On of Freddie and Montserrat was #1 in Brazil, I think it is the only country that it got there.
Queen is still loved in Brazil nowadays.
We're waiting Brian and Roger here!
We love you Brian, John, Freddie and Roger!!!

This song is so beautiful. I'm British and grew up with Queen's music - but this song was never a 'hit' in the UK (I actually don't think it ever even charted in the UK?). Whereas it was a huge hit in Brazil and Argentina. I actually first heard this in the Bohemian Rhapsody movie.

There is a moment when Freddy realises the magnitude of what Queen have achieved. The second time the crowd sings Freddy is quite animated then all of a sudden it's like he freezes to the spot and just soaks it all in. Wonderful stuff.

Was just looking at your playlist. You’ve done more than I remembered.😊 don’t think I saw Millionaire’s Waltz, Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy or It’s Late. The South American tour was just huge as it had never been toured by such a major group before. And yes, they really encouraged audience participation.

To see Brian May then with Freddie Mercury and now, with Adam Lambert, is like seeing him in live in two different dimensions, two different lifetimes. How unique is that? No other could ever say the same. Sweet but bitter.

Great reaction! The crowd was about 400k people, it was massive. You need to see You Take My Breath Away live at Hyde Park 1976 th-cam.com/video/UBBne8R66xo/w-d-xo.html. It is somewhat the opposite of this, where a crowd of 120k goes completely silent in order to hear Freddie sing.

The crowd always participated in this song but rarely to this extent. And remember a vast majority at this show don't speak English, yet they know all the words. If you watch the video of Queen performing this song in Montreal 1981, you can see Freddie's disappointment in the crowd's participation after the opening verse and you can hear him tell Brian, "They don't know it."

    • @GinMae
      @GinMae 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Actually, it was Brian who said "they don't know it" - and Freddie responded something like "that's okay" - and a few seconds later, it was clear that the crowd DID know it, and got into it -- apparently, they were just a bit slow... :)

@@GinMae I agree that the crowd knew the song, or many of them did. You could even hear them singing during that opening verse, but Freddie must have felt that it wasn't loud enough for him to turn the vocals over to them at the beginning. But they got louder.

Ok, let’s see what you think of these. Seaside Rendezvous, Good Company, Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon, My Melancholy Blues, It’s Late, Old Fashioned Loverboy, Dreamers Ball, and You Take My Breath Away. I prefer the studio version of this song. The live version was recorded before the album came out. Studio is more refined and better in my opinion. Saw Queen live the first time in 1977 and 3 more times after that. I hope you enjoy your trip through their musical library. 🍻
