  • Joel Salatin and James & Helen Rebanks speak at the Fox Hill @Bruderhof recounting the lessons they have learned from the past and from science as they work to build flourishing farmland ecosystems. Following the keynotes, they held workshops on livestock, pastures, and hospitality.
    Speakers:
Joel Salatin and four generations of his family run Polyface Farm in Swoope, Virginia, providing beef, pork, poultry, and forestry products to local families and restaurants. A self-described “Christian libertarian environmentalist capitalist lunatic farmer,” Salatin has been called the most famous farmer in the world. When he’s not traveling and speaking, he is home on the farm “keeping the callouses on my hands and dirt under my fingernails, mentoring young people, inspiring visitors, and promoting local, regenerative food and farming systems.” Salatin’s books include Family Friendly Farming, Pastured Poultry Profits, Salad Bar Beef, You Can Farm, Holy Cows and Hog Heaven, Everything I Want to Do Is Illegal, The Sheer Ecstasy of Being a Lunatic Farmer, and The Marvelous Pigness of Pigs.
James Rebanks is a sheep farmer and author from Matterdale, Cumbria where his family have lived and worked for over 600 years. He earned a degree in history from Magdalen College, Oxford. A New York Times bestseller, his first book and autobiography The Shepherd’s Life was published in 2015. Since then, he has written three other books.
Helen Rebanks is the author of The Farmer’s Wife, published in 2023. She and her husband, James, work their farm in Cumbria, England, which has become globally recognized through their nature-friendly farming practices and has been a retreat for many, including actor and comedian Nick Offerman. The Rebanks host events regularly at the farm to share their expertise and encourage others to farm sustainably.

This sounds great but the whole point of the political drive for sustainability is not to make us all self sustainable. In 1917 small independent farmers thought the Bolsheviks were siding with them. And then they found out different in a few years, but it was too late.

The western governments have stated and legislated that they want to reduce farmland. Sadly consumers are fine with the CAFO meat, flavorless tomatoes, and rancid grocery store milk. Unless we can share this with our communities and support local farms, they are going to get away with it.
