    My guess is that you need to concentrate on and learn what proper "shot placement" is instead of being so concerned about bullet penetration. These self same Powerbelts have killed every deer which I have ever hit with one of them.

    They are by no means garbage. Every deer I have shot it has went through or stuck in between the hide and meat on opposite side. Plenty of penetration for me.

    I have been using a ball and patch 50 caliber with a 100 grain charge for decades and haven't had any problem. But last year I bought an in-line CVA Wolf in 50 caliber and even with the shorter barrel, I have No problem dropping deer last year. I used the recommended products CVA recommended. I used an Aerotip 245 grain Powerbelt with 2-50 grain Pyrodex pellets. No problem with a pass through. Maybe the real problem is the shooter and how he shoots. Maybe before you go and bad mouth something, make sure your not the problem to begin with. It's always easier to blame someone else for your bad shooting.

    I drew an elk tag and deer tag in Colorado so I had to use powerbelts. Elk took 4 shots 290 grain platinums under 90 yards. All shots were behind the shoulder. Bullets looked like tin foil only went in 6 inches. Deer was shot right behind the front shoulder at 100 yards with the green ones 250 grain. Took the deer over an hour to die.

    I’ve shot deer with Powerbelt the old Hornady XTP sabots and I’ve also shot a number of deer with the XTP out of handguns and the last few years I’ve been using Hornady SST. I have noticed the Powerbelts do tend to come apart on heavy bone hits and lack penetration. Lot of comments here from world class marksmen. I get the importance of shot placement but hunting isn’t punching paper and we don’t always have the perfect shot. Sometimes you have to punch through a shoulder or sometimes we just pull a shot. There are tons of great bullets but I tend to steer towards people who have been making bullets for many many years whether that be Barnes Hornady or others. I get tired of the name calling and criticism in the comment sections. Let’s keep it civil and pass along our experience and knowledge so we can all learn.
    On a side note if you haven’t tried Blackhorn 209 give it a shot. It’s great stuff and much more friendly to you rifle and your nose. I sighted in yesterday and my rifle has been sitting on the bench in my reloading room and you can’t smell or tell it’s been shot. It is also much much less corrosive and cleans easily

    I shoot a CVA Accura PR. I ignored the negative reviews on powerbelts and purchased the 270 grain platinums. Very good group when testing. However, here is what happened during the actual muzzleloader season. One of the days I went out in sprinkled some. I was mindful of keeping my barrel down. Side note, I lost my private ground so I had been hunting very hard on public. On my 10th hunt I finally get a shot. Primer goes off and no powder burn. My friends rifle who also was out with me on the day of some rain had no problem igniting the powder. He was using SST’s. I couldn’t figure out why I had an issue until later. Let me continue… After the powder didn’t burn, I took out the breech plug and everything out, and even shot some primers to make sure the breech plug was in good shape. I loaded up and two hunts later I finally get another opportunity at a deer. I pull the trigger and all I hear is the primer. I go home and remove the breech plug to find there is no powder and no bullet in the barrel! On that hunt, I walked out to the timber with the barrel down and the powerbelt worked its way out of the barrel along with the powder. I cleaned the gun and reloaded for the next hunt. I finally get another opportunity 4 hunts later at a doe at 45 yards. I was very careful keeping the barrel in the up position at all times. I take the shot and there was powder burn but no recoil! It was like the bullet barely made it out of the barrel. The deer just looked around to see what the noise was. I took the breech plug out again to make sure there was nothing in the barrel. There wasn’t. I reloaded again and fired at a stump to test it. Again, barely any recoil. It was then that I realized that the gas from the powder was getting around the base of the powerbelt. The very cold weather must have shrunk the plastic cup of the base of the bullet so it would not expand from the powder ignition. I believe that the fit was so loose that it allowed rain droplets passed the bullet causing a miss fire. I put in my friends SST’s and the recoil was as it should be. When I first tested these powerbelts there was no problem, but it was not as cold that day. I know the work for many guns but they certainly don’t work for mine. No bullet should fit so loosely that falls out of the barrel. I have had three opportunities to shoot a deer and this bullet has caused failures on all three occasions. I do have to admit the 270 platinums suck in my gun!

    Last year I sighted in 250 grain aerolites with 100 grains of white hots. As a backstop I was using a pile of hard maple blocks. Today I split those blocks by axe. I found all 3 bullets. All 3 had penetrated the blocks about 7-8”. I thought that was great. What I was concerned about is that none of them appeared to show any expansion and even they poly tips were still intact.
    I’ve been rifle hunting and bow hunting deer for 30 years, reloading for hunting and varmit rounds and just picked a muzzle loader last year so I’m not exactly sure what to expect for expansion with a muzzle loader

    • @danielrivers1975
      @danielrivers1975 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’ve shot 10 deer with Power belts and found 4. The 4 I found were in snow, easy to track without a blood trail. Context, muzzleloader season in Massachusetts (where I live) is after bow and shotgun season so seeing a deer is rare so 10 deer is since power belts came out. The federal bore locks are amazing for white tail! I’m 3 for 3 with them. There’s probably better ammo out there but they’re the best I’ve used.

  • @chrisanderson7495
    @chrisanderson7495 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I hunt florida and cover is thick here. You need a good blood trail or you're not going to find your deer. Its incredibly rare to see them go dow here. Powerbelts completely disintegrate and don't exit the other side of the deer. A.k.a no exit hole. Shot from a treestand, that equates to a high hit on one side, no exit on the lowside..-no bueno. In that regard, he's absolutely correct. I found all 4 deer i shot with them, but was on all fours following pinhead bllo drops and tracks, and one I found by just dumb luck while gridsearching. Switched to federal sabots. No more issues.

      Everyone's Outdoors I agree,. My buddy took a mule deer a week before with a 300grain hornady sst sabot round and it went clean through. Unfortunately I tried to sight in those bullets on my CVA optima and they shoot about 2 feet low at 100yds with 150 grains of powder and my sight was maxed out in elevation. I had to go back to the powerbelts to get my shot to come up. The CVA’s front sight is waaaaaaaay to tall, all my friends who have them have the same problem. I do have aftermarket ghost ring sights and ramp, but it shouldn’t be the case. 🤞that the powerbelts will do the job until I can get a new lower front sight.

    They have killed a few Michigan whitetail out my CVA Optima Magnum using Powerbelts. That being said, I have never found a bullet intact. I think they work great at slower velocities. The problem with plated soft lead, it flatens out too fast at higher velocities. I use 100gr Triple 7. I believe with today's higher velocity BP substitutes (Triple 7, Blackhorn 209), these bullets don't fare well. With 80-90gr of Goex or Swiss BP, Powerbelts would probably hold up better.

    I disagree with the expansion on these bullets. Hit a shoulder or leg bone and there is some expansion. A clean straight thru shot has no expansion at all. Gel test them like I did with and without bone. They will kill almost anything but they ultimately suck as a good bullet. Hornady, Barnes, Thor or Parker are far superior.

    So I do agree about not much for penetration out of the arrow tips I just shot the biggest buck of my life last weekend with a 300 grain power belt aerotip and barely made it past the front shoulder no exit hole and barely any blood it killed a deer and I found him the next morning but no thanks for the blood trail and that was at 20 yds and I use 150 grains of powder 3 pellets what you think would be plenty of stopping power I'll probably stop using the arrow tips but I shot a double a few years ago with the power belt platinums 295 grain and that blew right through complete pass through she only went 20 yards so I may go back to those cuz the platinums do shoot better with 150 grains but the Platinum will most likely be the only power belt bullet I use if I use them again

    Why are you shooting deer in the shoulder? Simply draw a vertical line straight up the deer’s front leg. Then draw a horizontal line across the body splitting it in half. Where those lines cross is your aim point. This spot is at the top of the heart and through both lungs. Hit it and collect your deer.

    I have to agree with the powerbelt issues, at least from my experience. The only time i got a pass thru on a deer was with a shot that was literally 12 ft away. I shot a buck in 2012 at 70 yds, double lung, with the same 295 hp. Absolutely no blood. Not a single drop. And no exit. Still have the bullet i found in the hide on the opposite side. Only reason i found the deer was bc i saw water splash over some trees from him falling in the creek. I tried the 250 aerolites and could not get them to group consistently at all. Flyers all over. Could be a number of reasons why but i got so frustrated to the point that i will never shoot powerbelts again. Lots of really bad stories and reviews on powerbelts. But some people have good luck with them. My dad is one of them. Im trying barnes 250 t-ez at the moment and that is proving to be a real pain as well. Im certain its a just a matter of finding the right powder combo with that bullet.

    I have always wanted my bullets to loose their velocity inside of the animal, because they cause more low velocity destruction than a fast bullet that never mushrooms and gets full penetration. Worry about wound cavity and the difference in permanent cavitation and temporary cavitation benefits

      I use the Aerolites in a Optima pistol. When I first got the pistol 250 gr. Aerolites were what was recommended at 80 to 100 grains charge. Originally nothing was said about using a 150 grain load. I was quite surprised later to see the magnum (150 gr. charge) had been added. As a hunting bullet, I think it's too light for the heftier charge.

    Powerbelts are not copper bullets, they are soft lead bullets with a copper plating on them. As with any soft lead bullet you cannot push them with 150 grain loads. If you want to shoot magnum loads, you will be much better off with those solid copper Federal bullets. They are also very accurate bullets and load as easy as the Powerbelts and are hard enough to take your magnum load. Powerbelts do not suck, you just have to know how to use them. Powerbelt used to list a solid, why they no longer list it I do not know, but I'd think they would be better off to get away from the hollow point design. The hollow points just work TO good with heavy loads. You'll like the Federal copper. Happy Hunting.

    You don't want an exit with a bullet, that's called OVER penetration. This isn't archery.... this is firearms..... You need to learn about how bullets and firearms kill... You want the bullet to deposit 100% of it's energy into the animal. If you over penetrate, any energy after the bullet exits the animal is lost and waisted as opposed to causing trauma within the animal.
    Archery kills via hemorrhaging. You want an exit (2 holes)
    Bullets kill via trauma, you want energy deposit, NOT AN EXIT.
    Also, the AeroLites are designed to be used with standard 100-grain loads. You're using 150-grain magnum loads, so you're not even using the correct bullet for the load.

    • @EveryonesOutdoors
      @EveryonesOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve also used the “copper” variant and they suck also. When it comes to game animals you DO want pass through its NOT over penetration. On humans you DON’T want over penetration due to accidental harm to another bystander. Sounds like you may never have hunted thicker skinned game that require deep penetration!
