I Don't Like Broadway Be More Chill | Be More Chill Album Comparison

  • So Be More Chill is a fairly well known musical. It even has two cast album recordings, not something a lot of musicals get! There's the original Two River Theatre cast album recording and the Broadway cast album recording, and lots of people have their preferences of one over the other. I decided to throw my two cents in, and I think you can tell by the title which one I prefer.

Hey, cool first video! I'm currently hyperfixated on BMC for a third time, so it's nice to see some new content! (I especially appreciate how you take the show seriously and don't call it hot garbage btw. I've been seeing way too many people do that lately). Back in 2020, I used to prefer the Broadway version; I think this was because I had never heard the audio bootleg of the original Two-River cast and had only listened to the cast album + seen that little 35 minute boot. Meanwhile, there were so many Off-Broadway/Broadway boots out there that I really got the chance to get attached to the whole cast. Anyways, getting back to the point, I'm not so sure how I feel about it now; I think I am starting to prefer the Two-River one. This is probably going to be a super long comment, but I really would like to share my thoughts as well, so here I go:
    1. I think the instrumentations of the Broadway album are SUBLIME. You mentioned this in your video, but man, I love hearing the rich instrumentation and deeper techno-y sounds. It's just awesome and makes the album worth listening to IMO even if you don't like the changes made. I noticed more motifs used in the bway version too, like a bit of "Michael in the Bathroom" can be heard in the Pants Song. Also, I love how you can hear "Two-Player Game" during The Play when Michael and Jeremy are fighting. And, like you mentioned, what Roland does with his voice (the malfunctioning sounds) is just awesome lol.
    2. Will Roland is so freaking talented and an AMAZING singer. However, I do admit that his Jeremy is a bit strange. I don't think that was necessarily his doing, though, as it is important to note that many people were involved and would've directed him on how to act. I compare Will Connolly's Jeremy to a "Weezer boy," he seems much more sardonic and cynical. It feels a lot more accurately teenager-ish, and personally I love it, but I do think it contributed a bit to people hating him. Meanwhile, Will Roland's Jeremy is really loud and seemingly unaware of all social cues. It's pretty unique and I do like that, but it doesn't feel authentically "Jeremy." Two-River Jeremy is much closer to Ned Vizzini's book Jeremy, and overall characterizes him better. HOWEVER, I do like how the more loud/"weird" bway Jeremy is MUCH more similar to Christine! It makes their relationship feel so much more justified and sweet. Also, this can get lost in translation if someone hasn't seen a Broadway boot, but the reason why Roland's Jeremy sounds a lot more scared in the cast album is not just 'cause he's generally louder, but also because the bullying is more intense. I mean, Rich literally tried to shove Jeremy's head into a toilet...that's pretty intense!
    3. I think another thing that gets lost in translation is the overall context of the show and how it even went to Broadway. The Two-River version was a sweet and short regional production that wasn't expected to get more than a few weeks of showings. However, social media sites like Tumblr absolutely BLEW the show up and was what led to it getting on bway in the first place. BMC became special in many teens' hearts, and you can tell that the bway producers did not want to disappoint this die-hard teen audience. I think this is especially evident in a bit of the bway show's pandering. Now, I don't mean pandering in a "grr! I hate woke people way!" but more so in the way that that's why bway Michael is so much quieter and stuff like that. To me, it seems like they really wanted to hammer in Michael's "I can do no wrong" and "uwu smol bean" persona that the internet got really attached to. I think that's also why Jeremy lost his slightly mean edge to him. Like, it makes sense that a teen would get cynical after years and years of ostracization, but even that alone was enough for people to go: "JEREMY IS PURE EVIL BECAUSE HE CALLED MICHAEL A LOSER!!!!!" So..they had to remove that lol. (Also, this is random, but I think another reason why Roland's Jeremy is so loud is because it's a much larger stage, so, like, projection and stuff. Loud = funny works a bit better on a big stage because people in the back won't be able to notice subtle nuances).
    4. Touching on one of the most controversial bway changes: the SQUIP. To preface, I think it's important to state that Jason Tam is a great actor + singer and he's awesome (search for him in if/then, a chorus line, or bromance: the dudesical). This change is obviously not something that should be blamed on him (not implying that you did that btw, just clarifying!) and was overall just a directional change. I get the "oh it's referencing this movie thing," but you have to admit that that isn't super obvious to people who haven't seen many Keanu films lol. However, I do think the surfer dude thing is justified on its own, considering that surfer dudes are the epitome of "chill." It just feels so off because we all got super attached to Eric William Morris' version of the SQUIP. His version his awesome, and I think we all especially love Claudia Cacace's fancy and suave portrayal of him (LOL). The suave SQUIP is awesome, but ultimately a surfer one makes sense in the concept of becoming more chill. I don't think I have much more to say about this other than: this change esp highlights people's problems with the bway version. Some of the changes felt so different, and that's hard when you get attached to an original cast/interpretation of a show. But I think that if Tam had been the SQUIP's originator, people wouldn't have seen it as so bad/polarizing. It's a shame though that they made the bway SQUIP sing a bit less and do more "talk-singing," which you did touch upon in the vid. It doesn't show off his full potential which is sad. Also, I think it's important to note that Jason Tam is an AAPI actor, which makes it more accurate to Keanu himself who is Wasian :)
    5. In terms of general script changes, I agree that many seem unnecessary. However, I do feel like there's a greater context for a lot of them. Like, y'know how Chloe's "Madeline is such a slut" line is totally removed? It's cuz, IMO, they wanted to remove any aspect of slut-shaming/misogyny in this vers (the off-bway vers tried to change the line to Chloe essentially calling Jake the slut, but it sounded so dumb that they just decided to remove the line entirely). Again, this goes back to the whole pandering thing and wanting to remove anything remotely mean. It's weird, but I can get why they did it ultimately. I think some other line changes like in "do you wanna hang" wanted to develop the characters more; I think the bway version makes it much more clear that Chloe is jealous of Brooke thru the added lines. Also, I totally got what you meant abt the whole "why are they trying to make it funny" point, but I do feel like that's a little unfair to apply to just the bway version since the original does try to make it kinda "funny" in it's own way. Some lines like "he burned down Jake's house" feel super awkward cause, again, we're all so used to the original version. While I do feel it was unnecessary, I do feel like line changes such as those are just to add clarification, since "Jake's house" is less vague than "the house." If someone watching the show for the first time forgot that it was Jake's Halloween party specifically, some of the implications/jokes made later abt the fire might've gone over their head. I don't know, it's still weird, but I can kinda see why they made changes like that. A random line addition that I liked is Michael saying that Jeremy is just like crystal pepsi cuz he's "better with age" during two-player game LOL.
    6. Thank you for appreciating Loser Geek Whatever. I won't say much about it cuz this comment is already WAY too long, but you summarized my thoughts on it pretty much perfectly.
    7. This comment is so long, jesus. Thanks to anyone who read all of this! And, again, cool first vid, excited to see your Heather's one :) ALSO one last thing, I like how Rich has his lisp in the bway cast album vers of "voices in my head." That was nice.

OH MY GOD FINALLY SOMEONE WHO REALIZES THAT JEREMY IS A VICTIM OF ABUSE. BMC is literally my favourite musical ever. I agree with a lot of your opinions (Loser Geek Whatever best broadway BMC song), and I personally think that Will Rolands Jeremy isnt that great. He sounds like he's about to cry for majority of the songs, which, while it could work, it just makes Jeremy feel like less of a character, and it definetly doesnt work, especially for the songs. Great video, can"t wait to go and watch your Heathers one!

I want to say that I saw the Broadway boot for the first time recently (last March) without almost any context of the original 2riv squip, and I thought Jason Tam in the role was amazing. He got me really invested and by pitiful children (even with the different lyrics/scene context) I fell in love with the show! Jtam's performance didn't seem weird to me at all until I found out how different it was. In the moment, Jtam's squip felt manipulative and seductive and totally worked for the show. Now I love both squips and honestly alternate between both versions of pitiful children whenever I wanna listen to it.
Similarly, I adored Will Roland's Jeremy especially because of the way he considered and incorporated neurodivergency into his performances which meant a lot to me. (He said this in an interview.) He's an incredible singer and actor and got me soooo invested in the show!! He brought so much depth to Jeremy's character and made me laugh so much on my first watch. I went and watched DEH for the first time as well after bway BMC and ended up becoming a hardcore wrol stan lmao, and because of that simultaneously a wider Joe Iconis & Family stan due to how much they work together (and also bc of BMC, Lauren Marcus, George Salazar, etc).
I think my perspective shows that it sort of just comes down to which version of the show made an emotional connection with you first. I would say the only change I genuinely dislike after finding out it was different is Michael's character, since it flattens him and he honestly didn't connect with me as much because of it. Everything else I don't mind or is just a "omg, two cakes!" scenario. As a new fan I'm just really happy there WAS a Broadway run because I would have never gotten into BMC otherwise (I could never get into musical theater until I decided to try watching them performed live in full instead of just listening to the albums) but also because having both versions means I'm far less likely to get tired of the show any time soon. To me there's double the Be More Chill to appreciate and explore and I love that.
Sorry for the long comment and great video!

Yeah I definitely liked that Willrol made his performance more Neurodivergent! I appreciate it as someone who is most likely an undiagnosed neurodivergent, even if it led to him making some choices that I didn’t prefer over the TRT version. Also don’t worry about the length of your comment, I love hearing everyone’s thoughts!

My issue with the "My mothers would be thrilled" line would be if the delivery was changed. My issue is that Michael almost acts more as if he doesn't understand why Jeremy is upset over being bullied. In the TRT version he's more like "Hey man relax and it'll be okay, you have me" but on broadway it comes off more like "Why are you upset? Get over it".
At least, that's how it came off to me, and it made Michael sound less like a supportive friend because of it. Had the delivery been in a "look on the bright side", my mothers will like it" then it would've been better. Again just my opinion.
(Also the fandom making Michael out to hate Christine is a big-no for me seriously guys plz)

27:05 I was in the early BMC fandom, probably around late 2015/early 2016? And I remember someone starting a rumour that Will started crying during the song that night, and they had to pause the show. It wasn't true ofc, but as a bunch of young teens who believed anything in that tiny fandom, it caused a stir lmao
Also, thanks for the video! I totally agree. I was so excited for the Broadway version after asking for YEARS to get it back, and I remember listening to it at midnight on its release... I enjoyed it the first time, but after that I went back to listening to the two rivers cast. I watched the bootleg for it, but I didn't like the new set-up. It felt so genuine before, you know? And for some reason, the Broadway version felt like too much.
There IS a full BMC two rivers theatre bootleg out there, I've watched it, but it was taken down, and I stupidedly hadn't downloaded it... I really hope it resurfaces one day.
And I'm really glad to see discussions about this show with people taking it seriously! I see too many people calling it 'cringe' or apart of their 'awful theatre kid phase,' but this show meant so much for me when I was younger, and it still holds a place it my heart. And now I work in professional theatre so I guess I'm stuck being a 'cringe theatre person' now, and I couldn't be happier for that. Thanks again for the video, I enjoyed it very much!!

A BMC ANALYSIS VIDEO YAY I LOVE THESE!!! I prefer the Broadway version, however I do agree with a lot of the points you made in this video. I'm going to find the audio to the Two River version after this and listen to it :3
Something I like about the Broadway version of Voices In My Head is that after Christine agrees to go out with Jeremy, he does a little "WOOHOO!!!" and I think it captures a lot of emotion, which is true throughout a lot of the dialogue in the Broadway version (in my opinion).
I prefer the Two River version of The Squip Song, since Rich sounds a lot more serious and I prefer his singing voice in it. In the Broadway version I feel like he sounds like he's switching between singing and somewhere between singing and speaking (i could be wrong about this, it's just something I noticed on the spot). it also removes a whole part of the song. That's just my opinion, and I do think it sounds unique. I'd like this style of singing in a different song.
This video has given me a different perspective on BMC and I appreciate that, thank you :3
    (sorry if this offends anybody)

Ive always felt like two river bmc and broadway bmc are like two different shows. Imo the two river version is much more charming and realistic versus the Broadway version where the acting is much more exaggerated and imo over the top (and tbh i cant stand will rolands acting...sorry). michael is also so weird in the bway version??? even though its the same actor it feels more like the fandom-ized version of michael in the bway version if that makes sense

something i also really like about loser geek whatever is that they bring back the melody from the cut song touching my hand (which im very sad was never in the show bc it sounds so goooddd)
incidentally i think touching my hand also gives a little more insight to jeremy's mindset at that point. "if i was brazen like those guys/ when she would gaze into my eyes/ the look in them would reveal/ im fun and more and worth a damn/ at least i sorta think i am"
listening to loser geek whatever I feel there are similarities here in jeremy thinking he deserves better, but then wrongly concluding that to achieve that he has to be different (i.e. "like those guys" and "taking directions from another voice")
anyway i just really wanted to say that because even though i prefer the original two river version i really like loser geek whatever for basically the exact reasons you said (and also im absolutely in love with touching my hand and am forever heartbroken that will connolly and stephanie hsu never sang it so that reprisal of the melody also plays a role in my liking loser geek whatever)

I'll share a bit of my thoughts as well
So, I think most people prefer the version they saw first, so I can understand why fans of original cast prefer it, but I personally saw off-broadway (2018) first, so It works for me better (also I saw like 3-4 slime tutorials for bway as well, so yeah, there's much more vids than we have with og one)
Trust me, I WISH there was a full slime tut of original cast, but we have only 35 minute thing (and obviously the album, but I can only compare those shows if I actually saw the og version, album is not enough for me personally)
But there's one moment in "be more chill pt.1" which was very funny for me, so after Squip's "everything about you is so terrible/makes me wanna die":
You can hear WillR's Jeremy sobbing
But WillC's Jeremy goes "....Jesus Christ-"
AND Idk this difference is so fun for me

one thing about theatre in general is that different actors have different interpretations for their characters. will connelly (I have no idea how to spell his name) made jeremy a lonely 'loser' type of guy, while will roland made him more of a geeky nerd loser. it's fine if you don't like will roland's interpretation of jeremy, but I would say he fits Jeremy's character because of the way he portrayed jeremy. i hope you understand what I'm saying lol

Okay for a first video, this was pretty solid! You did a great job analyzing both versions of Be More Chill. I will say though, I personally disagree with your take on Loser Geek Whatever. I just feel like they got the point across better as a verse from Jeremy an Upgrade, Imo it didn't need to become its own song. But that's just me. Other than that, I was pretty much agreeing on every word you said! I look forward to seeing where your channel goes from here!

Okay so I almost completely agree with this it ABSOLUTELY addressed so many of my problems with the Broadway version for sure! I will prefer the og til the day i die fr!
With that being said i do disagree with a couple things. I think that Sync Up is a super good song, it's existence + Loser Geek Whatever make me believe that Broadway did at least have better written characters than the original; in the sense that everyone's internal conflicts got light shed onto them.
I also personally understand what they were going for when Jeremy attempts to flirt with Brooke in the Broadway version being loud and awkward because he JUST got the SQUIP and wouldn't be able to listen as well through all his nervousness but i don't prefer one performance over the other there.
Also, i personally think that Smartphone Hour's broadway version is a complete upgrade over the original solely to Jenna being so high energy and enthusiastic i LOVE IT lol
Other than that i agree with everything Pitiful Children is my favorite song in the album and I was sad with how much had changed in the new version 😞 the only thing i like better in the new one is the robotic "pitiful children" during the instrumental sequence. Loved this video!!!

I know this video is 9 months old, but I have always thought that the changes made for the broadway version screamed of producers thinking that audiences would be too stupid to understand or “get” the story, and decided on a bunch of changes to make the story/jokes way more in your face and obvious, hence, changing lyrics to better suit the main narrative even if it cuts really nice earworm moments or subtle moments of story telling and making the characters become caricatures of the original ones, hence Michael talking like he is always high, Jeremy being outrageously “nerdy” and just everyone being way over the top. My biggest issue for me is that loser geek whatever doesn’t add anything to the musical/ story for me. More than survivor is already Jeremy’s “I want” song, he explains how he’s tired of being picked on and awkward throughout the beginning of the musical, and, for me, ending at a place where Jeremy makes his decision to turn on optic nerve blocking he says “ I already know what it’s like to be the loser, I should find out what it’s like to not be the loser” is all I need, and then it transitioning into “should I take the upgrade?” With the chorus slowly getting louder with their repetition of “upgrade” and then suddenly yelling “now now NOW NOW” is so cool and representing the squip actively manipulating him into making a decision that he wouldn’t normally make. Yes it makes you hate Jeremy but that’s also what makes the story feel so much more like rollercoaster. It makes the stakes higher it makes the squip scarier and it makes Michael’s song hit that much harder. It’s not a bad song by any means but it’s just another instance of feeling like someone in production didn’t trust the audience to understand why Jeremy would make a bad decision and had to spoonfeed all the reasons why to them

    • @EvelynAiyana53

@@quinnlynn9333 Omg yes I totally agree, they made everything over the top and not in a great way, and they explain things more than making things subtle and letting the audience figure it out for themselves. The original upgrade ending was pretty good, but I do like the deeper look into Jeremy’s character that Loser Geek Whatever brings. However I can understand someone preferring the original upgrade over the other. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

I became obsessed with BMC again last year and I have too many things to say between both versions of A guy that I'd kinda be into
In the original it sounds more disorganized and more like Christine is very nervous explaining everything and doesn't know how to say it in words, that along with the instrumental complements the song a lot but Mr. Reyes interrupting Christine in the middle of the climax of the song bothers me soo much. because it could have been perfect without that pause :/
Now with the Broadway one I feel like they had to change it unnecessarily to sound more like Christine does in that version but for some reason Stephanie Hsu sounds very different in this specific song for some reason???? It doesn't sound bad but it doesn't sound like the original Christine or Christine Broadway, but something that I really like about that version is the part of the instrumental where a WUUU U WUUUU WUUU U WUUU WUUUU sounds in the background (it was in the original too but less obvious) and that in this version the song doesn't pause helps it a lot
overall I feel like they are both very good but the original just works better with Christine, love the video by the way it's great to see BMC content in 2024

Tbh before like yesterday I always thought that the two river cast was the original broadway cast bc I've never heard about there being a different cast, so every single time I looked a bootleg I typed in obc and was so disappointed whenever it turned out that no, that wasn't the actual original cast 🤣

I prefer the Broadway version because of the instrumentation and all the actors sound like they are having more fun. I much prefer Roland Jeremy. He's funnier and feels less like an asshole. The only thing I don't like is the Keanu Reeves Squip. He is not intimidating at all.

I'm conflicted with both versions of Be More Chill because I see a lot of merit in both versions. I like that the Broadway version tried to futz around with the original stuff, see what worked from the original and some flaws that didn't. And while not taking out said flaws, tried to improve upon them. Though I just have to admit, I like the off-broadway version. Both the album and generally the performances.
Which gives me just the craziest idea: Be More Chill the movie.
BMC being a movie would be actually perfect for a musical adaptation, because I feel like a TON of the sci-fi elements would be great for the screen. You could have 2-Player Game use some green screen, getting the actors in the middle of a video game. Or do 2D pixel animations for them. Maybe the "Michael in the Bathroom" set piece could be a continuous shot of Michael in the Bathroom. And as he's getting more and more distressed, you could have a super fun practical effect be the room literally shifting or spinning around.
Maybe get Edgar Wright (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Baby Driver) to direct, I feel like his editing style and the source material would really gel well together. It'd be a great opportunity to fix a few of the Broadway version's fumbles as well. My personal #1 gripe with the Broadway version that I would like to see fixed is how they handle Upgrade to serve as a set-up for Loser Geek Whatever. I like the original version of Upgrade, especially how it sets up the 2nd half. So let's change that set up in the original so it shifts into Loser Geek Whatever more naturally. And as we get to a natural shift in LGW, we can jump back to original Upgrade when we're at that "Do I take the upgrade?" crescendo and go from there.
Not only that, but I think even getting Keanu Reeves as an actor and maybe dubbing over his "singing" would be a hilarious gag. Or maybe let him cook and give him a vocal coach. And even then, he's like, an actor. I think maybe revamping the Squip's character to be like his book counterpart would be crazy good. Instead of being an evil AI hellbent on taking over the world, he's an AI that is just actually dedicated towards making Jeremy's life better. But somewhere along the way- maybe when alcohol gets in Jeremy's system, or as he's increasingly interacting with the toxic environment of high school- the Squip takes it a step too far and can't turn back.
Doing a BMC movie would honestly be a great opportunity to take what's best about these three versions of BMC (the book, off-Broadway and Broadway versions), see what worked in each of them, see what didn't, and try to make not the definitive version of BMC, but a pretty damn good version of it.

@@EvelynAiyana53 ok, so I'll admit, I'm more of a film bro, but I think it should be better than good. Especially after the disaster of the Dear Evan Hansen adaptation. I think musical movies as a whole have great opportunities to be fantastic movies, as they generally just have more resources at their disposal in terms of what they're capable of showing visually. Tick Tick Boom I think is a wonderful recent example of this, where it was mostly grounded, but it took a lot of opportunities to be experimental with its visuals. Especially in the "No More" and "Swimming" scenes. Kick that up to 11 with a BMC adaptation, and it'd be fantastic for that alone.

Two River album has my heart, but the Broadway version has its merits. I like how Bway Michael In The Bathroom has Michael sound more emotional
I’m sure Bway squip is good but I can’t not think of Skeet from Jimmy Neutron when I hear him lol
I think Loser Geek Whatever is a better act 1 finale than Upgrade that delves deeper into Jeremy’s insecurities and reasons for choosing to go with the squip ….. buuut I just don’t _love_ LGW musically? It’s not really my thing (and it cuts out my favorite part of Upgrade lol). Maybe it’ll grow on me when I listen to it more
