This was by far the best overview/tour of the Khaya that I’ve seen. Great job! I’ve been researching for over 18 months, and will be living on the road for 4-6 months a year, just myself. Based off of this review, I think I’m Team Khaya. I was team Canopy Camper, butttttttt…I think I’ve switched!
They are both great campers! The biggest upside of the Khaya is that you can remove it quickly and keep everything assembled.
FYI, we are selling ours for $28k if you are interested. We are building an ambulance for full time travel.

Thank you! We love the set up :) Ours is actually for sale right now because we need a bit more space (as a family of 4 with a dog) to live in it for half of the year. We'll be sad to see the Tacoma and the camper go...lots of memories! Right now, we're converting a 4x4 ambulance!

Great setup and vid! Curious about the headrest platform you made up top behind your bed... Any chance of getting a shot of the hinge and the lever you mentioned on the plywood? Thanks!
Sorry for the delay! For the hinge, we just used a piano hinge from Home Depot. We used gas struts that would mostly hold us leaning against it, but we added a wood brace to make it stable. I hope that makes sense!!
How do you all like the OME heavy Lift? That's the one I have been looking into. You have an amazing setup.

Fantastic setup guys. Love your Khaya setup and am very impressed with the whole setup. That’s the first time I have seen a fan installed on the ceiling of an Alu Cab.
I would like to know the total weight added into the truck. Also I understand you’re running OME leaf springs, but how much weight can it handle. Did you do anything to the ECU or re-gear. What type of mileage are you averaging on the Highway, I understand with this much weight, Mpg varies drastically between driving 60 miles per hour and going 70 miles per hour.
I will share my setup. I have a 3rd gen access cab TRD off road. I ended up getting a canopy camper on it and doing a goose gear build out. My weight with the camper and goose gear is roughly 640 pounds. When I have the 13 gallon water tank filled and my cooking gear. I’m around 850 pounds. For a toilet I use a Bush metal toilet with bags.
To handle the weight I installed a Deaver Stage III lead pack that can handle 900-1000 pounds, the truck sits higher than a stock Tacoma. I’m using the same OME BP-51.
I put on 17 inch wheels with 285’s as the width with the falken wild peaks I’m roughly a 32.6 inch wheel.
I have Yukon 4.88 gears and only have the standard rear lock, (no front). I manage at 60 mph roughly 16 miles per gallon. When I go 75 I’m at 13 Mpg.
I have the propane fireplace and am loving the setup. I have thought about a Zero Breeze AC installed in the goose gear cabinetry, but am waiting for a kit for the interior/exterior and water hoses that connect to the Zero Breeze to the outside of the camper.
Please share how the fan in your ceiling works and if you would do it again.

Hello and sorry for the extreme delay! The OME leaf springs definitely help, but we needed more support and added air bags on the back. That made the ride very smooth!
On the highway, we generally stay around 65 mph (unless I (Laura) am driving then it's a bit more LOL) and our gas mileage is around 16-18 mpg.
Our fantastic fan had a defect and the arm would pull too far down and break the lid. After we replaced the first lid and had the same thing happen again, we contacted Dometic and they hooked us up with replacements. Unfortunately, the fan parts were on back order and we waited months to get it. I'm happy to report, however, that we have now replaced the broken pieces and it works perfectly and moves a lot of air!!
While it was definitely scary cutting a hole in the roof of the Khaya, it was well worth it. Some places are so hot/humid with no wind and it's just plain uncomfortable "upstairs."

So far this is my favorite camper setup. Question though, how do the kids get ventilation in that bottom bed if the door is closed?
Hello! If it's hot, we keep the back door open with the bug net zipped shut. If it's cold and the heater is on, we open the small "hatch" door for heat to rise and air to move.
Great setup and really sharp looking. Just wondering why are you running all season passenger rated tires? Need some nice all terrain tires at least load range C for the places you like to go.
Good question 😂 we are cheap and wanted to wear these out before we bought new ones. We knew we weren't *planning* on doing much off-roading on this trip, so we just kept them from the previous owners. However, we took some roads that turned out to be pretty gnarly and we're regretting our decision. We have a video about that :)

How much the mpg after all those set up? I love it , i wish i could set up my truck like yours. I have two kids. Looking for a perfect set up form my toyota tacoma 5 ft bed. Where did you get your cargo set up?
It's a great set up. We get about 15 mpg. Can you clarify what you mean by cargo set up?

Honestly, I'm not sure. When we bought the Khaya from OK4WD in New Jersey, we added the solar package and that's what came with it. We love them though!

Dry weight on base Khaya is 880 lbs., your payload is 1180. With people, fuel, gear, and accessories to the camper, you are very overweight. Not being an ass but that is unsafe.
We upgraded the suspension to old manu emu heavy and added airbags which made it ride very nicely. However, yes, we were over the factory payload.
