  • Join me as I visit Tom Robinson's Wildlife Photography Hides near Bourne in Lincolnshire. I spend over 24 hours, with friend Dave Clarke, visiting 3 of Tom's hides, which are all in reasonably close proximity. Tom researches his local area, as well as his extensive family farm, to promote wildlife conservation and give visitors to his hides, the opportunity to photograph a multitude of species, which are changed seasonably depending on breeding success.
🦉 The idea of the 24 hours was to attempt to photograph Kestrels, ideally with young at the 'Wired Hide', Kingfishers at Tom's 'Pond Hide' and then return to the 'Wired Hide' for a nocturnal session with Tawny Owls.
The hides are in my opinion, exceptional, both in terms of design and setup, offering an amazing opportunity to view and photograph the target species.

📷 My setup for the visit, included my Sony A1, A7IV paired with my 200-600, 70-200 and 24-105 lenses. We used constant low level lighting and soft flash along with remote trigger.
    I hope you enjoy,
    Adam

Beautiful video as always mate! I don't do much hide photography myself, but got bought a session at Tom's hides as a bday present a few years back and it was absolutely fantastic - as you say, they definitely set the benchmark for what's possible. Great to meet you today pal, hope to see you again soon!

Yet another fantastic video Adi and a record of a 'hide' experience. I don't think anyone can question the respect you have for the natural world and hides have become a feature for the public to be introduced to wildlife eg at nature reserves, as well as 'private' hides which give aspiring photographers the opportunity to hone their skills x

I am a little uneasy about “pay to shoot” hides that are baited with live animals or dead animals that have been killed specifically for bait, road kill and seed bait is slight more agreeable. It’s only my feelings and other people hold different views.

Great Video But Sadly Far too many people jumping from hide to hide its not proper wildlife photography its just pay point & Shoot . Field craft is dying now

Thanks for the comment - I have to disagree. I do a combination of hide photography and field craft based photography, probably 75% the latter. There are many people that don’t have the time to spend in the field researching locations, and even with hide photography, the subjects are wild and are never guaranteed. If in doubt, have a listen to my podcast, The WildX Podcast as the subject is often discussed. Many thanks again.

I have to agree with Adam here. Well run, ethical hides definitely have a place - especially for those wanting to hone their skills early in their photographic endeavours. I also now lean far more towards fieldcraft because it, in itself, is a skill above and beyond what I do with the camera. And I am FAR away from perfecting it. Adam has been intentionally conscious to make it perfectly clear that this is hide photography and at no point attempts to pretend otherwise. I think folk who move between hides and try to pass them off as shots they've worked for is a whole different argument and one I think we would all agree on!

So many people trying to assert what is “proper wildlife photography” these days. It’s different things to different people and none of us have been ordained to be the determiners of what is “proper”. People should stop judging and enjoy the experiences that are on offer and the photos that can be seen thereafter.
Honestly, if you’re wondering what is “proper” then your head is in the wrong place.
