When have you ever heard of the Princess Royal being referred to as being the 'spare'? Never! Her Royal Highness just gets on with the job, supporting her brother and the family and doing great work for all her charities, God bless her.🙏
Anne is exemplary. Born second ? OK. There is a role for that position for that spot. Carry it out - and she has admirably. I will never forget her 24 hour vigilance over the queen's casket as she traveled with her toward her final destination. Dutiful daughter, whose husband never hesitated to support Anne. Always quietly in the background. Never a fuss, never private interviews or books, or anything of the sort. They deserve the respect of the nation.
“Spare” is a state of mind when you come down to it. Anne has never had that mindset. She embraced a supportive, essential role as a member of the royal family and has been brilliant at it!
Anne spent barely a decade as the spare. It was Andrew that was second in line for most of her life, so I imagine it must not have been terribly difficult for her to get out of that mindset if she ever possessed it at all. In fact, any attribution of "sparedom" to her would have been of her and/or the media's own doing.
It’s not a title to be a spare. It’s just something that comes with not being the direct heir. Any child that’s not the heir apparent is the “spare”. Heir or spare, being a royal family member comes with being an upstanding member of society anyway. So yes, Anne was the spare. And so were the other brothers that were not direct in line. State of mind or not, the spare idea comes from generations ago when people did not live as long and people became sick with illness and disease. So because of that, families needed a “spare”.
I have always admired Princess Anne. She has deserved great respect from everyone.❤ Very grounded with her emotions and willing to give her whole heart to her royal duties.
A spare that fully supported the heir, a very good example of family above anything else ❤ Princess Anne knows exactly what her role would be and made the best out of it.
No one should ever be called or treated as a spare we created equal in the sight of God that doesn’t mean we can support a king or Queen but you treat people respectfully unfortunately we don’t have kings or queens like that anymore
The look she had while walking behind their mother's coffin was so telling and full of emotion it chokes me up each time I see it. To me it was like she was thinking beyond the pain of losing their mum, the heavy weight that must be on Charles now. Yes, it was a LONG wait for him to become Monarch... but it was at the expense of losing his mum to do so. So very very sad! I'm glad he has Anne!
@@marieantoinettev712 seriously? My preference is my husband before my brother, but that doesn't mean I don't love my brother any less. Perhaps I am misunderstanding your comment there. And the thing between Charles and Diana... old news isn't it? Please don't be like Harry ok?
Agree. Sure, they have had a privileged life, but they have devoted their life to duty. And, I don’t think that most of the public realizes what strains are placed on them to do this. They can’t just go and live however they please, they know their every move is under a microscope. Any mistakes they’ve made, they have made them on a world stage. Does he think because he was the spare, he had more pain?? Idk. I went off on a tangent. But, yes. I admire the royals so very much.
What a beautiful documentary! I’m from America and I have to tell you I have so much admiration for the Royal family. I honestly think they are a gift from God they are wonderful role models they show that they’re not perfect but they continue to do their duties with honor and stability for their country. ! This documentary was very touching and moving . It shows that even though Anne, The Princess Royal was a spare, she undoubtedly stood by her brother and has given her support and dedication to the Monarchy her whole life. No whining or complaining. She just comes in and does her job. I love seeing pictures of them when they were little. I know they are extremely close. She was a dutiful daughter to the Late Queen and is a dutiful and helpful sister to King Charles III. I pray that this Coronation day that is just days away is magical and that it goes off without a hitch. I pray that protesters are not so mean that they try to spook the horses as I have read in today’s column. Save it for another day. God Save The King 👑 🤴🏼!!!!!
@@cheryla7480 yes I know that, but for a long time she was the spare. It doesn’t matter now, because Andrew isn’t a working Royal and either is Handbag Harry. Princess Charlotte is the Spare if we want to be technical about it.

One of the most saddest things when the late Queen died, was when Charles had just finished his first speech. There is a clip that shows him thanking the camera crew and technicians or whoever they were, and he is quite openly and unashamedly tearful. It was so very sad.

Charles was a man ahead of his time: nature lover, artistic in temperament, king in waiting. Never heard of Anne referred to as spare. I don't think that the rule of succession has her named as such. Alas Anne would've been a great sovereign were it not for the accident of birth. The coronation was equally historic and epic. I cried and got emotional 👑 🇺🇸 ♥️ 🇬🇧
It is so lovely to see, The respect and love these two siblings have for each other.. They will always be there for each other, with support and encouragement, respect and love
Princess Anne was only next in line until Andrew was born; though she certainly made a better job of her duties than Andrew ever did - but now William is the heir. The 'rules' have now changed, so for William's family, George follows William, and Charlotte is next in line. Anne managed to have her personal life as well as her doing her Royal duties.
I truly loved this ... thank you. Anne was never actually the spare. It was different then. Now of course Princess Charlotte is in fact, in succession to George. Its changed. Nevertheless, its been lovely to see Anne who has often been backstage but still very much recognised for her outstanding work, dedication and commitment to her role. I'm proud to be British and proud of our Royal family. (Most of them anyway)
@@denisehumphreys677 True. But to say Anne was never the spare is inaccurate. She was the spare through those critical formative years with her brother, and there was such a gap between her and Andrew, that early bond with Charles was never broken and remains solid to this day. I believe that was the point the documentary was making.
@@kayecastleman6353 You're right ... but I think there was also a hidden point: to demonstrate to some people that Anne's loyalty to duty and her brother was quite untinged by jealousy, and how much more admirable that is than behaving like a spoiled whinger.
@@charleslevy7782 Absolutely. I didn't mean to suggest the point I made was the only point in the documentary, just giving my interpretation of the title. There was a lot of information about their relationship, and I think your observation is valid. Charles and Anne have a deep and complex connection as heir and (one time) spare that's unmarred by many of the emotional pitfalls that plague other royal siblings.

Anne was the spare until Andrew was born, which was almost ten years. Had Queen Elizabeth not had any children after her first two, and if Charles had died before having any children of his own, Anne would have become queen.
@@katemaloney4296 Indeed, all ifs. Just responding to objections to Anne being called spare. But for a couple of (very significant) events, she would not only have been the spare, she could have become the ruling monarch. Sounds like you're less than pleased those events occured. I think she would have made an excellent queen, but I also think she prefers the life fate gave her.

I don’t think Princess Anne thought she was just a spare She was so committed to her royal duties that she didn’t see a competition with Charles or resented him, she just wanted the best for the people
Why do you keep saying the Queen's death was sudden and a surprise, she had been ailing, and didn't participate in many of the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations in June, Queen Elizabeth II died in September. She of course was very closely taken care of by her physicians, it came as no surprise that she was in the process of dying at the age 96 too.
and she was 96 years old to boot! the death of anyone that age can hardly be a surprise or sudden. people should be thankful that she lived to almost a century old and not died far before her time as so many do.
My 95 year old healthy grandmother died of a heart attack it was unexpected. I knew at her advanced age she could've passed at any moment but it was still a great shock.
it is not about Heir and Spare. This is how the society is. We have hierarchy: schools, hospitals, movies (director, producer, etc), multinationals. There is only one CEO, one director, one headteacher. Princess Ann had a better chance to do what she wanted in life, but she dedicated her life to her Majesty. She helped her mother with her rein. King Charles, waited in her shadow for 50 years . He respected, loved and supported his mother. King Charles impeccably supported his mother and also transformed the Ducky of Cornwell in a jewel. He is very talented. This is how normal family are.
Ma'am thanks for the monologue but yes it is, in every example you gave people are allowed to grow and be directors and managers here you cannot. So yes there is heir and spare.
@@TALKTRUTHJAMAICA please stop the victimhood. Multinationals have one ceo, schools one headteacher, hospitals one director, Richard Branson is the only one billionaire in his homily, not his brother. Prince Harry had the money and the means to become a surgeon, a teacher, a billionaire, but he is too stupid to become something. Same with meghan, who was just a class b middle age actress. Prince Philip ( who by the way was a narcissist and needed to decide over the queen’s feelings to feel powerful)wanted a” tougher“son “knowing perfectly well this place was not the right school for Charles personality , but as he was jealous of his royal status as next king he decided and placed him in the most inadequate school available ( instead Eaton … his late school in Scotland)

Ive always enjoyed Charles demeanor. There is no doubt in my mind he loves his family. I wish him well during his time on the throne. Im the same age as William and have grown up watching him grow up, watching their life from afar and both dread and am excited for the time he is King. I cant imagine what its like preparing for the day you will lead a nation the only thing stopping that from happening is the death of your parent. I wish this family all the best.
You'd blow the minds of the British press of the 70's by going back and telling them the future Princess Royal was going to be the most consistent, solidly reinforced role in the entire institution down to Anne's insanely underrated work ethic and principled view on constitutional monarchy in the context of the English people. But here we are, Princess Anne's the GOAT
Princess Anne is amazing and hard working and looks superb in a uniform. and none of the crap about being the "spare" she simply gets on with it Superbly.
You are right... But King Charles definitely took a stand.. showed that he sees her as the second in line of succession... At birth... When he sat her right behind or next to him at the funeral

Queen Elizabeth was well ahead of her time as far as being a working woman. She passed down this modern mindset and work ethic to Anne. Both women are so strong in their own, unique way. To be honest, I find it sad that we will not see another woman on the thrown in my lifetime. There is just something about a Queen that offers a different side to the monarchy that a King doesn't have.
I boycotted "The Crown." It was fiction, which many people took as truth. Also cancelled Netflix for cashing in on the royal story. I love Princess Anne, she's awesome!
The Aberfan episode was as close to reality as we got with what The Queen did that day. Aberfan still holds her in high regard for helping when she did, Charles was the same age as the children who sadly perished that day so she could relate to the parents who lost their children. She would have been the same if she lost any of her children at a young age
George V, George VI and The Princess Royal. The House of Windsor really had produced spares so deserving of the throne yet remained loyal to their elder brothers (until the two duke of yorks are called to step up). Anne, at the age of 72, has been the hardest working royal since the 2000s, and is seemingly taking to heart her parents' 'duty till death' legacy. philip was right to name her as his favorite 💕
@Karen Lee That's it. I think when you are allocated to do a job that you didn't choose to do and she honestly comes across. Also, in her new interview, she said it's time to talk about the relevance of the Monarchy. To your point her honesty about the discussion for change and not avoiding the question just remarkable.
You do know the second Andrew was born Ann was no longer the spare, he became the spare. Before William and Catherine had Charlotte, younger brothers always replaced older sisters in line. When Louis was born he did not replace Charlotte.
The linear storyline of this production is quite lacking. But I enjoyed it. Overall, I love learning new aspects of how the media have dissected this family over the centuries. Helps me to keep a level of discernment about believing anything book, line and sinker.
She's not the "Spare", but she's the best Spare/wingman, a monarch could ever have. I certainly think Anne never thought of her as a Spare, she's simply part of the institution and glad to be part of it.
Sweet Jesus could everyone stop picking apart the hard work these people do when making documentaries? Spare, not the spare, it's Andrew, it's William, it's Joe Blow... Point is we are fascinated by these people whether we want to admit it or not
I overheard a remark made by an English couple many years ago regarding The then Prince of Wales and The Princess Royal Anne. Of P.Anne they said " Anne is the best King of England They will never have. '"
Aaaand I'm crying. I miss her. So much. I've only recently been able to view anything about her. It just was too painful. The pain in my heart? Was and is far reaching. Quite unexpectedly too. My queen? Thank you! Charles? Anne? My heart to you both and the entire Royal family. Oh, my heart! What an absolutely lovely tribute to our monarchy. My devotion, though not comparable to the monarchy? Is resolute, steadfast and for life. Thank you for this well produced documentary. Absolutely nailed it. Bravo 👏 Long live, The King! 🙌 Sudbury, Ontario, Canada ❤️🇨🇦🤝🇬🇧❤️
Anne was not a typical “spare” though …. Behind King Charles and his children were Prince Andrew (not sure when Queen had the female thing changed) and hiss offspring, then Prince Edward and his offspring … before Anne came into the line of succession. Regardless, there were MANY times I thought the Princess Royal should have leapfrogged over Charles, but he has certainly come into his own as a future, and now King of England. I just think that Prince Henry (refuse to use his nickname or his wife’s name as it might generate some kind of perk for them) has been a spoiled brat … actually even more infantile behavior at 35+ yrs than when he was an actual toddler, child, juvenile. I wasn’t around at the time, but have seen so many documentaries and read historical stuff, that I feel I can say Prince Henry is even MORE of an embarrassment to the RF and England than his great-uncle, the Duke of Windsor was. ::: shaking head with shame :::
It’s funny that people need to say that the King has taken his new “rôle” in his stride, with great confidence, as though there was any doubt! My goodness, he’s been in anticipation of this moment since he was able to conceptualize what it meant at a very young age and for 7 DECADES, lol! Everybody around the world didn’t expect anything less!
23:40 Not only was Peter Phillips the oldest (first) grandson (grandchild) of Elizabeth and Pillip, he was also the first (oldest) greatgranchild of Albert and Elisabeth... better known as George VI and Elisabeth, his queen consort and queenmother.
Princess Anne is the modern rock behind the Royal Family. She cannot be underestimated in any circumstances. God help the Royal Family if she passes away.
I will miss her for whatever years I remain on this planet. In the United States we have experienced SO much turmoil on a national stage through the 60’s and on that the instability of it all has left a profound mark on ourselves as a people. We are not the only country that has experienced the same. Her Majesty was someone for whom I had great respect and admiration. When it could not have been easy she made her role appear easy by seemingly being at ease herself. She understood that holding her tongue in certain circumstances had as much power as attempting to be an obnoxiously overt supporter of an important position. Personally, she represented the continuity and stability I was not fortunate enough to experience as either a child or an adult. I do not support everything King Charles has done in his life as a husband but I understand what he was attempting to do-not always well handled. I DO believe her will be a good King, perhaps even a great one. It is in his hands she left the future of Britain.
What’s wrong with people…..Anne never was or is spare period! She was ten when her brother Andrew was born! He was the spare and then his brother Edward was born the spare’s ( spare ). Which made her 4th in line.
The Queen's death was not a sudden shock. She was in her 90s and had been having blood transfusions to keep her alive and her death was carefully planned to ensure it happened in September. This is the best month for weather and hence the funeral was easier with mild weather.
No one supports the monarchy or family more than Anne, but it is ironic that she didn't give her children titles while Meghan and Harry who hate the royal family rushed to give their children titles. Hopefully Charles does what the Danish queen has done and strip the titles of grandchildren not in direct line of succession. They would be known as count and countess.
Technically the spare after Charles was Prince Andrew, as by the time of Princess Anne's birth girls came after boys in the line of succesion, so the second after Charles when they were kids was Prince Andrew. Nowdays the rules of the succesion changed and so from William's kids, George is the first born and such the heir to the throne but Princess Charlotte is the spare, after him. Last one is Prince Louis the youngest of the three.
Andrew would have been the spare to King Charles.. He and Edward during those times would go ahead of Princess Anne. Princess Charlotte would be the spare to prince George ,Queen Elizabeth had that law changed about brothers jumping ahead of the females.
I thought Spare was in reference to the one who would hold the crown if the older Heir died. Anne was no longer a spare after Andrew and Edward were born. William's daughter will be in a different situation, she actually will be the spare because recently the rules were changed.
Anne was "the spare" for 9 years, 6 months and 4 days... i.e. 3.475 days. from 15.august 1950 till 19 february 1960... then she became 3rd in line... and on 10. mars 1964 she became 4th in line and as her brothers had children and grandchildren, she moves down the line every single time. Andrew was "the spare" i.e. 2nd ín line after Charles from 19. february 1960 til 21. june 1982. At that date he became 3rd in line then 4th in line on 15. september 1984 where he stayed till 22. july 2013 when George was born to Kate and William. It was on 2. may 2015 that Andrew became 5th in line and from 4. june 2021 till 8 october 2022 he was 9th in line. Now he is 8 in line after Lillibet Sussex.
I'm confused. I may just be a dumb American, but. Am I wrong in thinking that Harry was not the first second child born in the Royal Family? What about his Aunt Anne, or Great Aunt Margaret. Even his Great Grandfather was a spare as I recall. So what makes Haz something special?
Posisitively nothing makes Harry special. He's a jealous little worm who would like to burn down the entire world because he wasn't born first. He isn't the first prince in history to be super jealous. King Richard III was so jealous and power hungry that he murdered his 2 young nephews who were in rightful line of succession. Hence, Harry isn't even original. 🤨🧐
He lies he never really stopped being together he took her to his honeymoon with Diana . Diana said it herself she said it herself . Camillia is a home wrecker. He first met Diana as a child. Diana and Andrew were playmates. She said truly she thought she would marry Andrew just because they knew each other so well they grew up together pretty much. The Queen Mum suggested Diana because she was a virgin and she was a humble school teacher, which meant shes good with kids and would be a good mother ( as she was)
Princess Royal ceased being the “spare” to the heir when she was 9yrs old…when her younger brother Andrew was born. I do wish this “documentary” focused more on the relationship between Anne, her role and her dedication to duty, and her place in her family, especially her thoughts about being skipped over as heir simply because she was a girl. Thank goodness that has changed!!
Anne has not been "the spare" since 1960. Her ascension to the throne has been such a long shot for decades that I doubt it's ever been on her mind. No doubt she's been a confidante for Charles and will continue to be. That's a good enough story; no need to dress it up with drama.
There s a lot of respect in their relationship as a family, as a passing tradition from eras we can only imagine to today and towards the future as a symbol of stability in the eyes of the entire world. This symbol keeps us feeling safe and sane. There s more than history to it, it s a sense of direction to the future. Long live the monarchy!
Princess Anne isn’t the “spare” the primogeniture law was in place until prior to the birth of Princess Charlotte. Prince Andrew was technically the “spare” to our King.
I'm glad she had a fling with Anthony Parker-Bowles; too bad he was Catholic otherwise Parker Bowles would have totally dropped Camilla so she and Charlie could have gotten on with it.
What a shame Harry didn’t look to Anne for an example. She has never been my favorite but I have to give her her due for her unwavering support of the Monarch.
When Andrew was born, Anne was no longer the spare. She and her children are behind Edward’s children. The law that made it possible for a daughter to inherit before a son was passed after she was born. She never let this stop her. She serves her Country with pride and never complains! She has always been a favorite Royal.
Prince Andrew was the spare' not Anne, as males had priority over females. Princess Anne knew she came after Andrew and Edward. The Queen changed that when they were already adults and with their own children.
Her Majesty recognized by then what a tragedy it was that naughty, self indulgent Andrew was legally the spare instead of her older and immensely more capable daughter Anne.
@@smc130 Andrew was her favourite, after all. Don't think it had anything to do with it. She knew the world was changing and she had to change with it.
HRH Princess Anne has not been the "spare" since Prince Andrew was born (1960), Prince Edward was born (1964), and definitely by the time Prince William and Prince Harry came along. She knew this early on, unlike the late HRH Princess Margaret who foolishly thought she had a chance. The Succession to the Crown Act (2013) amended the provisions of the Bill of Rights and the Act of Settlement, to end the system of male primogeniture, under which a younger son can displace an elder daughter in the line of succession. The Act applies to those born after 28 October 2011. Unless an act of God tragically kills a large swath of the Royal Family, Anne will never wear the crown.
She was Spare to Charles only until she was 10yrs old when Andrew was born. Since Andrew and Edward outranked her, so do their kids and grandkids. When the law was changed before William´s kids were born, it wasn´t retrospective. So while Charlotte is ahead of Louis in succession; Anne is still behind his younger brothers Andrew and Edward, and their families. But Anne is the closest of siblings to Charles.
Most accurate detailing I've seen so far in all these comments! Thanks for sharing the correct information. One minor note... I suspect you may be a non-native English speaker, because Anne is still behind "her" younger brothers, not "his" younger brothers. Otherwise, flawless, including the correct spelling of Anne's name, the correct usage of "their," and an overall comprehensive, well-informed commentary.

One of the most saddest things when the late Queen died, was when Charles had just finished his first speech. There is a clip that shows him thanking the camera crew and technicians or whoever they were, and he is quite openly and unashamedly tearful. It was so very sad.

The whole world watched while this family honored their mother. It was something we all understood.
Anne was the spare until Andrew was born, which was almost ten years.
But this programme was produced knowing already she wasn't the spare and portrayed most of her life long after Andrew was born
No whining and wingeing and accusing or betraying her family. Just dedication to duty and loyalty to the Crown.
Most Royals who are not the heir to the thrown are thankful they aren’t. Being the Monarch is a huge responsibility!
She just understood her birthright as simple as that.

Anne was the spare until Andrew was born, which was almost ten years. Had Queen Elizabeth not had any children after her first two, and if Charles had died before having any children of his own, Anne would have become queen.
And what a Queen she would have been! Just like her beloved Mother and Father. Not taking anything away from Charles, God bless him.

Anne is now 16th in line of succession. She will be displaced further down the line as the families of her nieces and nephews grow.
All if's. Unfortunately, it doesn't change the present.
@@katemaloney4296 Indeed, all ifs. Just responding to objections to Anne being called spare. But for a couple of (very significant) events, she would not only have been the spare, she could have become the ruling monarch. Sounds like you're less than pleased those events occured. I don’t think Princess Anne thought she was just a spare
She was so committed to her royal duties that she didn’t see a competition with Charles or resented him, she just wanted the best for the people
Why do you keep saying the Queen's death was sudden and a surprise, she had been ailing, and didn't participate in many of the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations in June, Queen Elizabeth II died in September.
Thank you! When I heard that, I was like whaaaa?
Totally agree with your commentary. There’s nothing sudden about the death of someone who is 96. She lived a long and fruitful life.
I believe Her Majesty lost the will to live when she lost her Prince.🤾

It is in his hands she left the future of Britain.
have expected to hear more about Anne and her role as spare!!! please bring more about that in an extra episode.
What’s wrong with people…..Anne never was or is spare period! She was ten when her brother Andrew was born! He was the spare and then his brother Edward was born the spare’s ( spare ). Which made her 4th in line.
She was only spare for a few years when she was small.
The Queen's death was not a sudden shock. She was in her 90s and had been having blood transfusions to keep her alive and her death was carefully planned to ensure it happened in September. This is the best month for weather and hence the funeral was easier with mild weather.
That engagement interview between Anna And Mark Philips was painfully awkward. You could see they hated ever question. 😂
She has proved herself in every way. She has no insecurities to have to compensate for. So she is perfectly content
Andrew would have been the spare to King Charles.. He and Edward during those times would go ahead of Princess Anne.
Princess Charlotte would be the spare to prince George ,Queen Elizabeth had that law changed about brothers jumping ahead of the females.
Yet HRH accepts with gratitude and grace her role in the Royal Family… unlike other “spare” who has only degraded our beloved Family!!!
Well said!!
What a heavy burden! It must be very very challenging.
I thought Spare was in reference to the one who would hold the crown if the older Heir died. Anne was no longer a spare after Andrew and Edward were born. William's daughter will be in a different situation, she actually will be the spare because recently the rules were changed.
Anne shows you what "The Spare" really means
Queen Elizabeth was an extraordinary human being. I still cry thinking of her.
for goodness sake
Wonderful lady Princess Anne is a strong force to deal with. Charles should listen to her as she knows the Monarchy better than anybody. 🙏❤️❤️
This is correct. How could this documentary get it so wrong.
Well she may be the spare, but she's also a total Boss. 😊
Anne never was called Spare. Charles & Anne didn’t just grow up brother & sister they were also friends
Princess Anne is wonderful. I admire her so much 🌟
I'm confused.
The Queen Mum suggested Diana because she was a virgin and she was a humble school teacher, which meant shes good with kids and would be a good mother ( as she was)
Ann should have been crowned the Queen in my eyes, she has earned it over anyone!
It is not a popularity contest and neither an achievement.
What’s the point of the monarchy?
King Charles has a good heart, may God be with him and Queen Camilla. 👑👑♥️♥️
Princess Anne isn’t the “spare” the primogeniture law was in place until prior to the birth of Princess Charlotte. Prince Andrew was technically the “spare” to our King.
We are so lucky our life isn't played out in public
I'd say Ann has had it pretty darn good all her life. She's also a genuinely good person from what I read.
Wow he’s been prepareing for this role his whole life it’s bitter sweet cuz he lost his mother and had to process the weight of the crown.
Princess Anne, my favorite of the Royals; with the least to gain & yet the the most charming & human.
Anne was the spare for ten years before Andrew's birth. She is now 16th in line of succession.
