Galis (30 pts) vs Petrovic (28 pts, 11 asts) | 1989 Eurobasket FINAL)

  • 32 year old Galis is still here. Having beaten the USSR of Arvydas Sabonis ALL ALONE in the semi final, scoring 45 points in an incredible one man show, Galis is about to play his second consecutive Εurobasket final. Against him, Drazen Petrovic and one of the best basketball teams ever, the national team of Yugoslavia.
Galis is said to have proven that one can beat five, but in that case, PETROVIC, ZDOVC, PASPALJ, RADJA, DIVAC, DANILOVIC, KUKOC, VRANKOVIC, are simply IMPOSSIBLE to beat.
The Yugoslavian team beated everyone by 20 and 30 points in that tournament, and was named the european dream team. Galis had one of his worst starts ever in the final game, obviously being tired by his breath taking performance one day before, but finally scored 30 points. He even received 3 blocks, something that was rare, despite his short height. But this time he had to overpass his 6,10 feet personal opponent (Kukoc), fake his 7 footer back up opponent (Radja) and then shoot over his third one of 7 feet (Divac) or 7,2 (Vrankovic) which was practically impossible, even for Galis.
On the other hand, Drazen shines! Scores 28 points and dishes 11 assists, and becomes the tournaments MVP providing some of the finnest plays ever, in european basketball.
ALL FIBA european championship 1989 tournament team: Pg Galis, Sg Petrovic, Sf Kukoc, Pf Radja,
    C Sabonis. Enjoy.

Greece was a decent team that rose to top tier for the years 1987-90. they also performed well at the World Championship in Argentina with Galis absent. At that time also Aris, Galis club, went 3 straight times to the final 4. Unfortunately after Galis departure Greece's weakness was evident. they'd never beat Yugoslavia and Croatia during the 90s. Only after Serbs and Croatian teams weakened when the old players left after 2000 was Greece able to beat them.

Aleksandar Petrovits once said, "Drazen is my brother and he is a fantastic player but I believe Galis is the best player in Europe"....this extract is from a statement of Aleksandar and he made it despite the fact that he and Drazen were brothers. In my opinion they were both special in their own way. If you please stop comparing these two great players. One of them is Resting In Peace and the other one has retired.

The Greek team was exhausted because they had to beat Russia before the final, an amazing team with Sabonis, Volkov, Marciulionis and many more stars.
Nick Galis was at a different level from all European players at that time and he helped them to improve and of course Greek basketball to produce many more good players during and after his time.

True, Jugoplastika's team was created after 1988 (Kukoc and Radja were just 16 year olds in 1985). Yet, Drazen won two European Championships with his mediocre team, back to back. First time against Sabonis' , Kurtainaitises'and Marchulonises' Zalgiris, and next year then against Maccabi Tel Aviv..My point is, no other player European player has ever been so dominant in the game. Again, Gallis was great, but comparing him with Petrovic would be same as comparing Lebron and Jordan.

Best non nba scorer of all time is Galis. Probably main reason he didn't come to NBA as he played little to no D and was not blessed w size and body to play physical 80s n 90s type defense and #2 reason is his moves wouldn't work too well w hand checking and opponents w close to his speed and more strength in the NBA. Although I have no doubt that he could succeed in this current nba style !!

Galis was no doubt a great player. Petrovic is on the other side undisputedly the best European player ever. He won everything there is to win in Europe before he was 25. IN the process he did that both with average teams (Cibona 85-86 was mediocre without Drazen) and with great teams (e.g. this team in 89 had Kukoc, DivaC, Radja, Paspalj in the lineup), He also played strong basketball in the NBA. The only great gam he ever lost was the one against Greece in 87.

"but I can't see Gallis coming even close to being a sucessful NBA player"
I respect your opinion of course, but I am with Red Auerbach or Bob McAdoo on that. There is nothing to support that argument. Galis was born and raised in USA meaning no adaptation issues for him and he was by far (by very far) the most athletic European player of his time. Galis after all in college had 28ppg in his senior year (third in nation).
P.S. He didn't play in NBA not out of fear that he wouldn't make it (his mentality was exactly the opposite and never feared to take down stronger teams) but that way he wouldn't be able to play for the National team.

But I want to say something about that game: the yugoslavian team in 1977-78 was more fun, but this Yugoslavia 1989 is probably the european best balanced team ever, with the USSR 1985.

That was an exeption - greek win by domestic hype in Greece 1987. This would "happened", real picture - two games with yugoslavia, and Greec was overrun by 35 and 21 points (in final yugoslavia slow the speed and play exibition for crowd). This is real state. Greek players Janaki, Kristodulu, Kamburis and Fasulas were very good - Galis wasn't 'alone'. If Dražen would play with them it will be dramatic, maybe equal - but that only meand that Galis wasn't 'alone' against other teams. He is very very good player, only player could compare with Dražen, but you greek fans are all irrational and emotinal - you make myths, even lies about all issue.

Nevertheless - even that it is not easy to accomplish, so I congrat greek team. But beside that spectacular moment, greek national basketball succeses are pretty thin. Greatest plus from that championship euro title 1987 was that basketball itself is greatly branded. I really admire Nikos a lot. He is only player for me who could stand by Dražen. So he doesn't need false support by greek fans - I mean lies like spreading fake 'Dražen' statement non stop: "if I am devil son, galis is devil hiself" and emphesizing that "Galis over outnubered Dražen" - also fake. Galis was ranked among the best in assists in Euroleague as well but his passing was overshadowed by his sky high FG% scoring (note that the stats I am posting are not for prime Galis as he was 37 in 1994).
As fas as dribbling Galis was also a virtuoso. You can't tell me that you have actually seen Galis and don't remember his dribbling. His repertoire was immense. He dribbled behind the back, between the legs, crossover and of course that killing change of pace dribbling that always had his opponents going to the left while he was going to the right. They knew it and still they were falling for it!! And don't forget his incredible spin move. He was an expert on that as well. So quick and precise. What you describe was more like Oscar. Not Galis. He had a complete offensive game.
