    Hugh either didn’t take or intentionally overdosed on his heart medication. That’s how he died. It was his agreement with Olivia, that he’d stay if she let the kids leave.

    In the last frame of the series, when they’re all celebrating luke’s 2 years sobriety, if you look closely you can see that trish and theo are now married because they have wedding bands on their finger and steve and his wife are expecting their first child. It’s beautiful and I was crying just like you when I finished this show. It’s an absolute masterpiece.

    Screamiming Meamies is Olivia’s episode so it can’t flash back and forth from the past to the present because she didn’t.
    It’s linear only because she IS trapped both literally and figuratively in the past.

    Despite all the talk about "the house did this" and "the house is evil", it's really Poppy that is the only evil ghost here. The rest of the ghosts are friendly or just living their "best ghost life".
    - The tall ghost just wanted his hat back.
    - The "monster" in the basement wasn't attacking Luke - he crawled across the room to press the button to send the dumbwaiter back up to the kitchen (since the buttons in the kitchen weren't bringing it back up). Luke's shirt got ripped because the "monster" was pushing him back into the dumbwaiter for when it went back up.
    - The Bent-Neck Lady was either trying to warn Nell about her fate or just sad about it - the close captioning when she first appears has her saying "No" over and over again.
    - Hazel tries to warn Liv that Poppy is lying to her.
    Poppy was insane when she was alive, so she was insane when she was a ghost. She is the one that tormented Liv and drove her insane. The house isn't evil - it's Poppy that's evil.

    • @sumonjamal1653
      @sumonjamal1653 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      No... the House is a cold, cruel, evil and hungry entity that feeds off the living and traps their souls. The way it wormed it's way into Olivia and made her insane... It drew Nell back to give her everything she wanted in an illusion before taking her life. The kittens in Shirley's episode were literally drained of life within the House... The Dudleys warned them that the House was bad after dark - it nearly drove Mrs. Dudley insane ... It literally would not let Hugh fix it by infesting itself w/ mold and rot...
      (Many of) The ghosts within the House may not be evil, but they are perpetually stuck in whatever state the House took them in when they died... and trapped in this loop within the walls where time does not even mean anything - the ghost of Hugh appeared to young Shirley and Theo even when Hugh was alive (The banging on the walls was the ghost of Hugh) ... The Ghost of Olivia scribbled 'Welcome home Nell' on the walls long before Olivia first came to the House.
      The Crane family encountered that violent storm one night while there was no storm outside the House... Olivia kept alternating between her ghost and her live self which is why Hugh could not reach her.
      The House seemed to have the power to manipulate time, which explains how Nell was lost during the storm ... and blind its occupants w/ illusion. They heard and saw dogs from a different time - there were no dogs on the grounds in the present.
      However, it's power comes from the living, not the dead... The red room was revealed to be the 'stomach' of Hill House - it could be anything its occupants desired and fed off them... picking off the weaker minds and driving them insane.
      Hill House is literally an evil predator.
      In the end, Hugh recognized that the House would devour them (He would never be able to fix it or sell it) and was feeding off his wife Olivia and children... which is when he rushed them out of the House that night but was unable to save Olivia... Hugh made the decision - the House would be empty and would not feed on the living again... and it started falling apart as a result for decades.
      I can guess that it had already left scars on everyone who survived, from Hugh to Nell ... and they carried a part of the House w/ them long after they had left. The House knew that Nell & Luke would come back ('Welcome home Nell" was scribbled in the past... it knew Luke would come back and be poisoned - that was how the House showed them to Olivia in the past as adults in the future) ... Hugh had to ultimately sacrifice himself to free his remaining children from the House.

      The Dudleys' story is one of the most tragic in the whole show. They lose both of their daughters early and then the devout Christians choose to die in the house and sacrifice a heavenly afterlife that they believe in to stay with their children instead. Whether any given person believes in heaven or not, the Dudleys believe in it, and they give that up to voluntarily become ghosts instead.

    It chose Liv because she already had some supernatural gifts to see things.. She saw ghosts that others didn't.. So she was easier to get to. With that and her medical issues (migraines) the house "scattered" her, and used Poppy to manipulate her.

      The house didn't "use" Poppy to manipulate Liv. This was Poppy manipulating Liv all on her own. The rest of the ghosts in the house weren't trying to hurt Liv or the rest of the family.
      Poppy was insane in life so she was an insane ghost.

      Yeah, there are some people who think that would have been the better ending, and I totally disagree. I feel like some people think horror has to always have a sad/bad ending for the characters, but that doesn't work for a show like this that invests so heavily in the characters. If they're all just dead and trapped in the house at the end, what would be the point of them improving as people?

    35:02 In this moment Hugh’s empty medication bottle can be seen lying next to him. When Hugh is trying to convince Liv to open the door and let the kids out of the red room, he softly says to her “If you open that door, I will make a promise to you that I will keep forever.” I believe his promise was to stay with her forever in the house and be with his beloved Olivia, ultimately after ending his life via medication overdose.

  • @VonPatzy
    @VonPatzy 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +31

    The house chose Olivia first because (in Stephen King lingo) she had a strong “shine” that the house could use as a window and as an energy source. He kids were shiny too but she was a better bet as the mother to serve meals up to the house.
    I don’t think the dad really saw anything until the last night when the Ghosts all suddenly became visible to him when he was trying to get the kids to the car. I think this was because the house had eaten enough battery power off of Liv that it could finally appear even to a “normie” or non shiny living person.

    • @cainyourkids
      @cainyourkids 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      I've also thought that the House didn't need to make Hugh see ghosts to keep them in - the entire House itself was Hugh's Red Door. It kept breaking itself in weird ways (water three floors down in the basement walls?) so that Hugh, the committed fixer-upper that he is, continues to stay and thus his family continues to live in the House and unconsciously allow the House to sink its teeth into them.

    Professional Paranormal Investigator since 1980s. There are several types of ghosts. In Liv's case in this show. She's what we term as re-play. Livs forever trapped in moments that led up to her physical death. As beautifully puts it. "I feel like I'm in a dream" She's forever trapped in a loop. Such spirits also have moments of lucidity. They are aware time has passed. But only for brief periods. And then they return to the “dream state” replaying forever the traumatic event or events that led up to their physical death. To free such a spirit, a Psychic holds them in that lucid state as long as possible and makes them aware they are passed. At which point that "Tunnel of Light" they become aware of (now that dream state is gone) and move on. In the case of the show, Hueh is playing the role of the psychic and snaps Liv out of it. All three of them pass into "The Light" in the Red Room. The Red Room being a portal. Hueh, Liv, Nell are FRRE of the House, its a happy ending For them. But Abagale, Her mom, and the all the rest are still haunting Hill house. As for Hueh's death.. Heeh was taking heart medication. Nitro tablets, You take those even today if you have a heart condition. My late father took those as well. It's a HIGH dose to instantly lower your blood pressure to prevent another heart attack. In Hueh's case he took the whole thing OD'd to carry out his promise to Liv.

Not all of them are very horror oriented, but they're adjacent (Bly especially, being more of a gothic romance). Still 100% recommend them; they're all compact for being miniseries, too.

    I've enjoyed your reactions to this show so much! Your state during the last ten minutes or so was pretty much exactly like mine, heh - I've rarely cried like this during a television show. Screaming Meemies is an amazing episode, one of those I often wish I could watch again for the first time - getting Olivia's perspective throughout is such an eyeopener.
    I've watched a LOT of Hill House reactions, and sometimes people figure out that Abigail is the Dudleys' daughter during the tea party, but I didn't realise until mr Dudley said that they were there because their daughter had snuck out, and I LOVE seeing other people get it in that moment, too. It's such a great revelation, and so sneaky storytelling! Because of course we all assumed Abigail was a ghost, and when Nell sees her in the present in episode five the same way Luke did that seems to confirm it.
    I enjoyed the recent Fall of the House of Usher, but I still think Flanagan peaked with Hill House. One of the greatest television shows ever made, in my opinion. Horror with real heart.

    39:30 Hugh died by taking the rest of the heart pills in his pill bottle
    The house chose Liv because she was incredibly psychically active and the house feeds on whoever moves in. Liv being so psychically active powered up and awaked the house. In the book, there's a similar theme where the characters all exhibit psychic abilities and their presence awakens the haunting. In Bly Manor it's further explained that places like Hill House are gravity wells for whoever dies on the property and that a tragic or horrific event can create these gravity wells.
    From the speech that Trish gives during Theo's hallucination in episode 9, it's implied that Poppy and Hazel are sisters and that they're both in love with William ("Guilt and Shame are sisters Theodora"). Poppy, who is disguised as Trish, is giving the story of how their gravity well was created. William Hill was driven mad by guilt and shame from two-timing Poppy and Hazel, so he bricked himself behind the basement wall.
    Mike Flanagan also had talked about how there was going to be a glashback episode that focused solely on Poppy and Hazel, but they scrapped it for pacing and ended up using the storyline in the penultimate episode of Bly Manor instead. The Violet and Perdita storyline is actually the story of Hazel and Poppy Hill.

    This show became one of my favorites and I don't think I ever cried so much watching fiction. It hit so close to home, the family love, rhe sibling bond, everything. It hits even harder now that I'm a mom, the unconditional love and even the fact that yes, you sort of want to keep them this small forever...but Nell's speech will forever make me think of my grandma, how she saved our family and how her love made us stick together dispite of my father and aunts' feuds. 'I loved you completely...and you loved me the same.' Yep, love is what we remember as we leave, I'm sure of that. But, as a mom, the Dudleys' ending scene is what breaks me now. No greater bond than a mom's and her babies'.

    Liv had an especially strong "ability", I forget but I think she said she got it from her grandmother? The story of the hail storm was hinting at the storm being caused by Liv herself as she was so struck by grief from her father's passing. That's why the house affected her so much, and in the same vein we see that Liv recognizes that in Theo - but I believe Nell also had some sense and it manifested as a kind clairvoyance with her seeing her own death her whole life.

    The house "chose" Liv because she had some form of psychic powers. Liv talks about this in previous episodes, mentioning that her mother had some form of it, and that Theo can sense things by touching them.

    Nellie died, and Shirley wakes up saying "Nellie is in the red room"... so, no much more to tell what is it. Except, maybe, mom saying she heard Luke knocking on the red door sooo many times across the years.... Cos the adiction. Same thing...
    Every sibling has a ghost. Steven said once to dad "you are the ghost".. thats why he doesnt believe any other ghost, he was a kid who wanted to be like his father always helpingh, and so on, and then saw the father fail misereable in the mom case. After that, the father figure becomes a ghost, and he even vasectomy himself. Shirl always motherly, wanted to take care of the cvats, but her mom said "the kittens needs a mom"... when mom died, she tried to take care of siblings, and makes mistakes by herself.. cos the pressure, and she puts pressure on everyone around her too. Her real ghost is her mistakes, specially the cheating night... I think I talked about Theo on other comment, on Bent Neck lady episode. Nellie is haunted by her own fear of death (she sees herself dead), what, in part, leads her to suicide.. looks ironic, but suicide people, mostly, dont want to die, they just want the pain or the fear to stop (also, they keep remembering they were happy in past, and start to dream about the past more and more looking for that happiness who never returns, and wont have any other happy cos they live on past and not in present). Not by chance, she is twin to one adict.
    There are way tooo many layers on this show, but you remove the ghosts and think "what does this mean?" (like in the abused girl case, she had a ghost, and the ghost wasnt real, it was something she created to be able to keep on living), then you start to see the "things" that are going on... like, after a funeral, everyone is so depressed who ends up having a night on the red room... things like that.
    I loved your reactions, I will follow the bly manors too. Wish you a happy new year (today is 2 ajnuary ;-) ) and lots of sucess..

    I think you missed that when Steve was writing, it was supposed to make us, and Steve, think that it was happening *after* they went to the house to find Luke.
    There are lots of ghosts in the house, but Poppy seems to be the only malevolent ghost in the house before Liv. Poppy was crazy before Hill House, then her kids each got sick and died, then her husband cheated on her and disappeared (bricked himself in the wall), and I think it twisted her. I think that the house feeds on the energy of those in the house, but I don't think that it's actively evil. I think it's like a pitcher plant, or a venus fly trap, and maybe the feeding makes people who are sensitive, like Liv, unstable, and makes people who are already unstable, like William and Poppy, go over the edge.
    The mom was the one who gave Nell the visions, because she wanted to "wake" her up.
    Hugh had a heart condition. He started to take a pill, before Poppy interrupted him. When he and Steve are standing over his body, you can see his pill bottle laying next to him. The cap is off and the bottle is empty. He took his life, so that he could stay in the house with Nell and Liv, in exchange for Liv letting the rest of the kids leave.
    That ending makes me cry every single time I see it.

    Hugh killed himself. Poppy dropped the pills in front of him and he ended up taking them and overdosing so he could stay with Olivia and she wouldn’t be alone in the house. I think there was a short scene where the kids leave the red room carrying Luke and Steve looks down and sees Hugh’s dead body next to a bottle of pills

  • @TomTomson81
    @TomTomson81 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

    I think you're misunderstanding something here. At no point does the mother decide to kill her children. Her goal is to wake them up because the house suggests to her that they are all asleep and have nightmares. And in nightmares, it's usually always the case that when you die in a dream, you wake up at that moment. The mother would never intentionally kill a child. That's why she kills herself, because she thinks it must be a nightmare that she just killed Abigal. So she also just tried to wake up and hanged herself.
    And you cut out the confetti part of Nell's monologue. Probably the most beautiful line of the whole series. It's a pity, but your reaction over the whole series was great.
    By the way, two possible endings here. The first one that you see and have accepted for yourself as your end, and the second is that the house wins, and everything you saw in the end, that was shown to you in terms of happy family (like Nell before she died), was just a suggestion, because the whole family never left the house and died in it.
    By the way, the father made a deal with the mother. He died of a pill overdose. I believe, the pill box was still in his hand.
    And of course, the house chose Liv and not the father, because she is more vulnerable, she is more willing to believe than the father. The father was too rational. He's a tough nut to crack. The mother also had a gift, and with it the house could confuse her more easily. The mother, like Nell, could see into the future. That's why she found her two children lying dead as adults in the morgue. As with Nell, the house also took advantage of this gift and played with it. That would never have worked with the father.
    Heaven and hell do not exist in the series. Everyone is stuck in the house. The house suggests a beautiful life in it and they are happy as ghosts according to their ideas. The house fulfills their wishes and feeds on them in return. That's the deal. If there is heaven and hell, then they are forever in between. The soul can't travel any further. Whoever dies in this house stays in this house.
    It's also a real shame that you've already seen midnight mass. That was great too.
    Bly Manor, The Fall of the House Usher, The Midnight Club. These are also Mike Flanagan series that we can watch together.

    I really loved your reaction. I sincerely hope you do decide to watch Bly Manor. Ppl like to hold it to Hill House and thats not right. The story stands on its own. Its different but is beautifully written and done in its own right. This story was about family and Bly isnt but it doesnt make it any less special..and i will say its like American horror story in the way that its an anthology series. One has nothing to do with the other, and in fact a few of the actors in this will play a character in the next ( i won't spoil it for you. You can discover which ones if you decide to watch!) I will say this one Flannegan based around Shirley Jackson's novel Named " The haunting of Hill House" (funfact: several adaptations have used the hill house story in the past, including the 1999 movie version Called "The Haunting" ) whereas he tells us that Bly manor got his inspiration from the book " Turn of the Screw"

    Every hallucination Liv had and everyone had was Poppy manipulating the house to screw with them. She wants the home to be full. Liv’s migraines were poppy in her head. When Nelly went back in ep5 and saw the house differently then it actually was in reality, it was poppy in her head. Making her see what she wanted her to see. I wish it were more obvious after Abigail died who it is that takes her hand. Most people think it’s poppy. But it’s Mr Dudley’s mom

      Liv was driven insane by Poppy so she was an insane ghost.
      Poppy was insane when she was alive so she was an insane ghost. Poppy was the one that drove Liv insane - it wasn't the house or any of the other ghosts.
      The other ghosts were just trying to live their best ghost lives. They weren't trying to hurt the family.

    Hugh explained it himself, kind of: Liv was the kite, and he was the line. Liv already was psychic in a way and also as a person way more open to the metaphysical- remember how she made sure Steve read all philosophy, and told Shirley we all become stories when we die, whereas Hugh was way more grounded and always dismissed what his kids saw and experienced? If Poppy came to him the most that would happen is that he would evacuate his family, but Liv is predisposed to listen. Liv already has the fears that are excellent fodder, just as Nell‘s abandonment from her family made her a perfect victim.

    I don’t think there is access to heaven if you die in the house. If you die in the house, your soul gets stuck in the house instead of passing on. And for me, that’s what makes the Dudley’s story so bitter sweet.
    The Dudley’s were heavily religious. and they gave up their place in heaven by dying in the house to be with their children. Proving further this story is about family if anything.

    You asked was it super- (or preda-, to use Steve's word) natural in the end? I have been thinking about this series and watching reactions for years, and I absolutely think that in the end, Steve chose to write the, "... and those who walk there, walk together," line as literally "rewriting the story" (we're all stories in the end, as Olivia says to Shirl). He first wrote the "... worst of it, worse than the tabloids," (Shirl) version, and in the end, he chooses a "walk together" story. But something I read from someone else in other comments pointed out that the dad was "holding the door closed" (and had no arms left for the kids), and that he is STILL holding that door closed. Olivia didn't/doesn't want to let them go. If you watch the scene where the door to the Red Room shuts on the dad hugging Olivia and Nell, you can see that Nell looks happy/relieved with her eyes closed, but Olivia is looking straight at Steve/the camera like, 'I don't want to let you go.' It is this paradox that I wonder about.

    I posted a comment in one of your super old vids like years ago asking you to watch this and im so glad you eventually did it! 1-Hugh took the pills .. that was his promise to Olivia so they would open the door to the red room. 2- yes you did hear Nell say "go!' to luke when he was in the rehab center because time is all messed up for her and she didnt mean "go! leave the rehab center" she meant " go! wake up from this mind trap Poppy has put you in" . 3- i dont think the 'red room' was like a portal or anything. its just that hill house itself was a fuked up place supernatural things happen, time is not linear, and people who die there turns in to ghosts.. poppy was obv evil and she also manipulated ghost olivia to do bad things but there are good ones like Nell tooo. It just feeds on people and fears and this poor family ( some members with gifts and abilities) happened to be its victim since the day they moved in till the end of the show.I hope you can talk about the show in another video after you had time to let it sit and after watching youtube vids on easter eggs and deeper analysis etc on it . The soundtrack is amazing too .

    Re: your two questions. As to how Hugh died, it's because he chose to. The house was pushing the whole family to drive them to insanity and despair, to give up and accept/choose death. And it's only because Nell kept dragging the kids out of the house's visions that it didn't succeed with them. But Hugh accepted dying to the house out of love instead of despair. But that choice to die was itself enough for the house to take him. As for why the house chose the mom, it's because she was both sensitive and had influence over the rest of the family. Her sensitivity was a vulnerability the house could exploit, through Poppy's insanity, to drive the mom crazy, to her death. And then after the mom was dead, her desire to have her family stay with her forever was what the house could exploit to draw in the rest of the family. It's the house that's evil, not the ghosts themselves, necessarily. But the house can use the ghosts as vectors to help it kill others, if there's something about them it can exploit. Nell's love for her family was enough that she could work against the house's agency, while Poppy's insanity and Liv's obsessive, possessive love aligned with the house's desire to consume others, allowing it to use them to that end.

      When she asked about Hugh's death, she meant "how did he die?" The answer was an overdoes of his heart pills - you can see the empty bottle next to his body when he's dead.
