- This video features four thrifted Allen Edmonds shoes: Three pairs of Derbies and one pair of woven two-tone split toe loafers, all size 13B. The Derbies are a pair of mahogany or brown Bradley split toes, a pair of walnut Charlestons with a stitched apron and sharp chisel point toe, and a pair of Clifton cap toes. I apologize in advance for the spoken audio being too quiet in the early part of the video.

I believe the combination of the apron and the split toe makes it a Norwegian split toe. Great finds as always, love your enthusiasm and knowledge of all things AE.
What a great haul of Goodwill finds! Love the mirror shine on the Cliftons.
Nice finds. In the Navy, wrt the lacing displayed of the split toe derby at 17:28, when that 1st lace is going over, we call that “ bridged laces” which would get you gigged (demerit), during a uniform inspection.
Long time viewer. Robert, what you have done with your channel is incredible. You have provided the means to which most people who don't have a professional shoe workshop, to gainfully repair and tend to their shoes with innovative and creative techniques. There are those out there that use heavy duty threading machines, sole presses and the like and that is needed in the world of manufacturing. However you have shown us the longer path, with patience, skill and elegance the way artisans would have worked back in the day. Thankyou so much.
Thank you sir!!! 👊🏼 I appreciate the compliment!
I owned two pair of "5" series AE; my sister is a clothing rep and carried AE, the five series was made in Italy. Out of the box I thought, well AE is going the way of J&M. Not so, these shoes were works of art imho. Very stylish, my favorite was black, plain toe with a tapered toe. I have been highly critical of AE quality because I love the brand. When I was a kid my "sainted" father abandoned us and I had to put bicycle tire patches on the soles. Anyway, my nickname became 'PATCH''; after finding a side hustle, I bought a new pair of J&M at St Vincent de Paul, must have belonged to a wealthy man as they were new. Can't remember what I paid for them but I have always bought the finest footwear and suits.
I have a pair of the Bradleys. Great looking rustic style, and very soft uppers. Very coomfortable, too.
I have a pair of Ralph Lauren loafers purchased several years ago from the AE outlet that came with dovetail heels
Great and informative video Bob. Please keep up the good work. Heck of a find there !!
A few months ago, I found a nice pair of Bradley’s for a lot more on eBay, same color as yours. Although they were my size (12D) they are a bit narrow, but I have‘em almost broken in now. I “highlighted” (lowlighted?) the stitching with some black cream polish and I like the look.
Just got outta work, just relaxin with a nice pipe and Robert Powers video! Cheers! This is pure motivation to polish my shoes tonight.
OMG!!! There's more! Bonus "Power Hour"! Great video!
I just scored a very similar pair to those woven-split toes for $25 on Poshmark (and in my size)! Similarly, the soles looked to never be worn. The only difference is that mine do not have a split toe (they are the Carlsbad model). They have quickly become one of my favorite pairs of shoes.
I take it back--there are a couple more differences. First, the insole is tan with gold writing. Mine also have the dove tail heel. The other part of the sole still has the Allen Edmonds logo, and that looked brand new. So maybe AE did produce some dove tails on regular calfskin models? Or someone customized a new shoe a bit?
@@coreyfink6783 Dove tail heel... interesting! Maybe they did? I know you CAN order AE's with a customized sole.
Bob,
I normally wear a 10.5 D but 11 C fits me great. I love when I see an 11 C on EBAY because the same model shoe will be a lot cheaper than in 10.5 D because people are afraid of the narrow sizes. I always check for both.
Great point! Roughly speaking going up one half shoe size should increase the width the equivalent of one letter.
Robert, what is your opinion of Esquire Boot and Leather Cream? I use them on my shoes maybe three times a year. Not recommended for shell cordovan.
Joe, I honestly hav never used it, so I'll refrain from commenting.
I was never a fan of the Norwegian split-toe style either. However...in the last few years, (and yes, I am an older man at 55), split-toe shoes have grown on me. Thrifted a pair of Wilberts, Delray's, and LaSalle's, from Goodwill...and I love them. As far as sizing goes...I have learned, that one does not have to adhere to an exact specific stamped size. (Especially when thrifting). My perfect size is about a 9 1/2 D. I can easily wear oxford's, and derby's, in 10's, on up to 11 1/2 depending on the last. As far as loafers go...I usually have to downsize. So I can go as low as an 8 1/2 on some loafers. Some 9 1/2 loafers...are actually too big. So I don't adhere to just "my size". If I did that...I would miss out on many good deals. I thrifted a pair of Walnut Strands the other day...in 11 1/2, for $10 bucks. Not going to pass that up...just because they are a tiny bit loose. I have it in my mind...that 11 1/2...is the largest I should attempt to wear. A 12...is just too long and clownish looking on me. And I can go as low as 8 1/2, especially in a loafer. So I think more people should be a little bit liberal about what size they wear. Sure...if you are paying premium prices for brand new shoes...sure...go ahead and get the most perfect size fit you can. But when thrifting...it is no big deal if you wear a 9...and see a great deal on a pair of 11's, and buy them. Typically...no one in the whole world...will ever know that they are a tad bit too big. So what. Lol. Took me a long time to discover this...but once I did...it opened up a whole world of choices in thrifted shoes. Now...I don't even blink if I see a pair of Allen Edmonds 11's, that I like...I get them. Especially at such cheap prices. Good luck and good thrifting. Love this channel.
Yes, all great points! I have a pair of Polo monk straps in size 13D I wear comfortably.
I don’t know how you find these thrift finds, I can never find anything in my local thrift stores. Nice finds!
Same for me. My local goodwills just have absolutely schlock.
Check Poshmark there’s AE at good price you just need to check regularly:)
honestly you just have to go really often. i've been lucky and found quite a few but i can go months with no finds. try on monday and tuesday. i seem to have the most luck on those days. also look for thrift shops that aren't goodwill. i have much better luck at some local shops than i do at goodwill.
Foreal.
I have found 1 pair of Allen Edmonds at a thrift store, I was a noob and not paying attention. And once I got home, I realized they were 2 mis matched AE shoes.
That's a nice haul, Bob. Thrift stores have been pretty dry here in NC lately. I'm not much on loafers, but I like those Leylands!
I have AE single monk straps (Norwich) around the same era as those (2010ish) and they have the dovetail heels as well. My first pair of GYW shoes after college. Still have them but I wore through the ball of the foot and they need a cobbler’s attention. They were very comfortable with thicker soles and a split welt compared with the version they make today.
Good thrifting there Robert, you certainly can spot a bargain. Nice work as always and Happy New Year to you and your family😊
Glad to see another video from you. Great scores, especially those Leylands!! My finds slowed down for a few weeks but have started picking back up thankfully.
Thank you! I sometimes almost feel bad how irregular my posting schedule is. I sometimes think I sould save a video like this one and release it next week so I don't go a month with nothing, then 2 in a few days, but I just cannot bring myself to keep a video like this from the world once it's edited! I also do not want to force a video when the genuine motivation or quality content is not there. I'll have another video soon of putting rubber protective half soles onto the Leylands soon.
Certainly no benefit to forcing a video out just to say you published something every week or 2. Viewers can tell when it's done to "check a box" or done for the pure enjoyment and excitement of the topic at hand.
Hey Bob! Not sure if I missed it, but did you cover how to remove the sticky residue from the pads on the inside of the shoe? I recently received a pair from eBay with that sticky residue from a foot pad and was wondering how to get rid of it. Thank you!
I've found that Saphir Renomat works, sometimes isopropyl alcohol may work, or I've used automotive brake cleaner too. So sorry for missing your comment!
Nice thrift find. I haven’t been lucky yet at my local thrift stores.
Hi Robert. Another interesting video! Those loafers are beautiful....but I am interested in the Charlestons. Are they by chance 11.5 D? PS: Do you have personal e mail to communicate? THANKS AGAIN!!
WJ, SORRY for missing your comment! But I had already found them a home. I'm robertepowers on ebay FYI. My email is robertpowers1972 at gmail dot com.
Great video Bob ! I have seen a few Charlestons online where AE did a 270 degree GYW. It looks like yours may be one of them too. Can you confirm?
I’ll be doggoned! I never knew there was such a thing yes! They are 270°! I never saw that, I totally missed it. I never knew there was such a thing.
I enjoy and learn a lot from your Great Videos.
Thanks! I'm glad they help!
I have a pair of AE Player's with that dovetail design; I guess it's one of those things where a manufacturer specs out a product strangely.
It could have been done by a cobbler? Or a special order?
@@CobblerBob From what I’ve seen, there’s a couple of AE Player’s Shoe that do have the dovetail. I have a feeling it may have been a year option. Also, it was oddly enough a double sole model too. Shame they didn’t fit; the last was too long and narrow for me.
As a sales guy where do you stand on the road warriors? I never loved them and just get dainties but was wondering if I missed something on the road warriors
Those were the ones with the one piece rubber soles, right? I never could get excited by them. They seem cheap to me.
Cobbler Bob. I need your vast knowledge of AE. I thrifted a pair of small font Allen Edmonds with Ostendo cushion heels. I can’t see a model name, but the # is 4998. I can’t find that number anywhere. I think they are sharkskin! They look like a Nassua without the wingtip. What are they?
Warren, I wish I could help more! They sound interesting. I just looked through the 1956-57, the 1963, 1967, and 1976 catalogs and couldn’t find model #4998. Are you sure that’s the model #? Those old shoes have a 4 digit # for the model # and one for the date code. The Ostendo moniker is definitely a 1960’s or maybe a 1970’s thing. You can find not all, but most of the AE catalogs online going back to the late 1950’s.
Hey Chief, is it possible to goodyear welt a shoe that was originally cemented?
Uhh, I guess anything is technically possible, but I'd say no, I don't think that's feasable. To do that I think you'd have to create a new insole/footbed, and you'd have to create the gemming, and somehow attach the upper to the new gemming. The upper will already have been formed to the flat cemented sole... I just don't see how to do it without basically almost winding up making a new shoe from scratch.
@@CobblerBob thanks
I just thought of this, doing a Blake rapid stitch may be possible though. With Blake rapid, a midsole is Blake Stitched through the insole. Then, an outsole would be Goodyear welted to this new mid-sole instead of onto a welt. This is just a theory though, I’m not a cobbler so I’ve never done it.
@@CobblerBob good point, thanks
Niiiiiiiiiice job Mr.Robert what thrift store did she find the AEs?
She said it was a Goodwill!
How do you sanitize the thrifted shoe once purchased them? Is there any standard procedure you will do? Thanks
Sorry for missing your comment! Yes, I usually spray a mix of 70% isopropyl alcohol 30% water into them with a spray bottle. PS, pretty much all of the shoes I find thrifting are bone dry. Bacteria needs moisture to grow. Leather is naturally acidic, which is antiseptic too. I've therefore never been too concerned with germs on thrifted shoes. I've never found one pair that smelled bad, for example.
I bought a new pair of AE kitsap derby's in tan. All I have is Saphir universal cream. Is that all I need? How do I keep it out of the brogueing?
Chris, I'm so sorry for missing your comment. I'm not familiar with that product, but I just looked it up ("Universelle Leather Balm"?) It looks like a conditioner to me. It will certainly nourish the leather, and it will add some shine. Just use it or polish sparingly. You will probably want to get a walnut or tan cream polish. I like Pure Polish. Be careful not to get a polish that is darker. To get it out of the brogue holes, just brush it out with the horsehair brush. If it's still caked in the holes after brushing, take the excess with a toothpick.
17:52 There seem to be two ways to start the criss cross. I actually think the way you did it here looks better but the Gentlemen's Gazette, for example, have a video recommending the style that the shoes had before you redid it. Not saying there is a right and wrong here, just pointing out that both styles are out there.
th-cam.com/video/jJ6sH54OxSI/w-d-xo.html
Great point! I just don't like that first lace straight across. To me it looks like a mix of 2 different styles. As you said, 2 ways of doing it.
$55 bucks for 4 pairs of Allen Edmonds, in that good of shape...is always worth the money. One cannot buy a single pair of cheap Calvin Klein's for that kind of money. A good deal...is a good deal. You got a good deal. As good pf shape the Clinton's are in...I bet you could get at least $100 for them on e-bay. Then...you would have made your money back, plus $45, and the other 3 pair...are free. 3 pairs of Allen Edmonds shoes...and $45 bucks in my pocket...sounds like a winner to me. 😎 (And even if you only got $50 bucks for the Clifton's...you still got 3 pairs free, plus a Big Mac meal). 😎
Do you sell AE shoes? I’m a 8.5 D
You might see shoes I feature here pop up on eBay once in a while. I'm roberteppwers on ebay. I'm 11.5 wide, FYI.
