For flags, you could use minifigure hockey sticks. Replace all the posts with upside down hockey sticks and done. Though they would all be plain white flags.
I just sat down for roughly more than an hour to bringe this series thus far! Just discovered your channel the other day and I can't wait to see the end result!
For the flags, you should use the American flag 1x2 tile they made for the white house, though they might be very expensive for how many you will need.
I found the solution in your previous tree videos!! :D Use your branch technique (the candlestick + clip), and attach the candle to the plate (clip sticking up). Then the clip can hold the tile piece (flag). Then the flag is only one tile thick and has no ugly connections. Only downside is the flag pole is a bit thicker and I’m not sure a clip holding a tile is legal? Or is it?
For the flags, get a bunch of "Transparent Flag 2 x 2 Angled without Flared Edge (44676)" and put your own clear-backed stickers on them. I think that lets you print the flags at an arbitrary size while still staying within the spirit of a real Lego build.
I really look forward to the finished product, when it is finished. You should totally bring it some sort of Lego convention. I'm sure lots of Lego people will be impressed
It turned out absolutely awesome! About the flags: I was also struggling to find a good solution, and I think it was you who suggested wrapping stickers around the bars. I had some time to think about it, and now I consider it the optimal solution.
So awesome to see this progress so far! I got the sense that those light gray rounded tiles near the gaps could possibly be rotated inward in such a way that it would cover a little more of the gap, and the adjacent ones could be slightly rotated too to spread it out even further. Idk if it actually works like that tho but i hope you’re happy with your end result its incredible!!
very awesome, been here since the start of the obelisk and can't wait to see the final product! Personally if you can do it right I believe the paper flags or mesh would be best. But if you wanted a purist look the small plastic flags lego has would work if you can print out a piece with all the flags at scale on a sticker paper sheet (like a lego sticker sheet!) then that would also be awesome! And since you're doing a sticker sheet might as well include a plaque with some info about the obelisk like how a UCS set is done!
Honestly I think that typical 1x1 plate with clip on the side is small and nice way to have a flag. Though it is not that smooth as other pieces can be. You can also alter the colors in a tricolor pattern.
I think making the flags taller than regular scale would be completely okay if you wanted to fit the build with other minifigure scale buildings. Often even the modulars are a bit downscaled like the Avenger's Tower so it would still work along that scaling. That aside, this would make a great lego set I think! If it were possible to recreate this in studio I think you could try uploading it to Lego Ideas. While the building techniques may be a tad iffy in legality it'll probably be sorted out later after approval.
@bricksculpt I completely understand. It might still be a good idea to try and make a version for Lego Ideas as I could see it being a success there. Lego would definitely tweak it of course to make it more legal to the Lego system but they might be able to still preserve the look
I assume it's the state flags around the base. I'm sure there's a lot of prints or stickers you could use, but I have two suggestions. One: 1x1 plate with vertical clip. It's thick, it's not pretty, but you can get it in more colours, I expect. Two: Minifigure hatchets. Probably only a few colours, I only have black and grey, but it's thin and smooth and vaguely flag shaped.
@@bricksculpt Ahh. I suppose the 1x2 American flag piece from the Saturn V set is too small though. Could use the 1x1 plate with vertical clip in red, like they did in the White House architecture set.
Have you considered putting some weeds between the gaps of the different circles? If you make sure there is no recognizable pattern in how you split up the layers, you should be golden.
@@bricksculpt I agree that the scale is off. I have absolutely no idea how you'd accomplish putting weeds there without making them look like small trees or large bushes.
For the flags, I think a good option at that scale would be to go to one of the big sticker Bricklink stores and get a bunch of cheap sticker sheets and cut out pieces of the general overall color of each state flag and just use those as a representation. Official LEGO, thin, might work pretty good.
I just realized they are all American flags, and not each state. Either way, could still use the same technique and it would be a little simpler if you get a sticker sheet with a little white and red on it, then maybe cut a little square of blue to stick on.
If you want paper flags, you could cut up the white space in an old lego manual. That would technically make the paper a "Lego product" for your purist build.
It's all coming together nicely. And the gaps between some stones are just realistic, no doubt the real one has some bigger or smaller gaps between the stones in the base here and there.
The circles don’t look very circular, it kind of looks like a rounded square. Also the green headlight bricks should be cheap and easy to find since they appeared on the PAB wall in LEGO stores not too long ago; I have quite a few of them.
All very cool! But, I would like to see this done with your obelisk 1.0 with the 1 LDU stacks. Stickers are a legitimate way to work with Lego. Print all of the flags, front and back, on a sticker sheet, and then, painstakingly trim them all out, and wrap them around the top of those 21462 / 30374. Liked and subscribed. I love your technical Lego work!
Two minor questions: - will you make the two intersecting circles outside the grey stone pad? They’re a striking part of the landscaping - is the height of your current flagpoles to relative scale of the obelisk? They seem short to me but it’s hard to judge
this might become too chunky, but combining a red 1x2 round plate, a white 1x2 round plate on top, and then a blue 1x1 round plate with hole and a red 1x1 round plate with hole could look good. or maybe make it 2 plates thick and alternate between a design with a red 1x2 and white 1x1 with a design with a white 1x2 and a red 1x1 (both including a blue 1x1 round with hole, of course) I'm not sure if my design intent is coming across...
I would use part 15712 to help build the flags. At the scale you are going for, using that clip, along with various colours of 1x1 plates (3024), would allow you to make different colour combinations to signify different countries.
Great work. I'm sure it's gonna end perfect. I wanna make a comment without any intention of offending, just because I know you are a perfectionist. The masts seem a little short for the scale of the whole monument
With paper flags you could print them. Otherwise you could use 1x1 plates with clips in various colors to match the primary color of each of the state flags (I assume that's why there are 50 of them?).
I think printing out a bunch of perfectly scaled paper flags and making a hole in them to slot onto the bars would be a good cheap option. If you have access to a laminator it would make it even better as LEGO does do flags with a paper thin plastic for boats. Otherwise the Saturn V comes with a clear 1x2 Tile with a flag on a pole. I think this piece would be the best official LEGO piece to use as it fits the scale perfectly. It is however likely the most expensive option due to the price of the set
Oh wow, this is an AWESOME technique! I might have to steal this for something, though I don't know what just yet. As for the 1x2 SNOT bricks in green, they're thankfully in a ton of sets from this year and last, so once PAB Standard is back up and running, it should hopefully be really easy to get them in bulk. Whenever that may be... (Alternatively, you could source 2 Coin Coffers from the LEGO Mario theme, as they have 4 of the piece each)
For the flag you could somehow add a clip piece to the back of the 'Tile 1 x 2 with American Flag Pattern' (part number 3069pb0587) from the NASA Apollo Saturn V micro scale set.
I would suggest moving the outer dark ring one layer outward so that the holes on that layer are less visible since they are really noticable, however this comes with a downside of the spacings not being consistant with the real buildings base. Maybe try it out and see if you like it or not, I think it would look great if youre not going for the full realism :)
Base is looking good! Will the obelisk be attached enough that way? Wonder if the weight might mean it could easily fall to the side if knocked, and if it'd be a good plan to lock it in more by extending the obelisk core through the base and holding it in with some Technic
Something wrong with the "Flag on Flagpole, Straight" piece? Are those too high? They have a 1x1 round base. (Not a Lego connaisseur, but when I was young I had a bunch of these.)
@Aidandanj I looked at a picture of the monument. The flags are roughly 10m high. 10yd if you insist. 😉 Relative to a 150m monument. Not sure how tall the model is, but I thought that would not be that far off. Those bars, if those are poles, look small to me (unless the model is smaller than I imagined). On second thought, the proportion of the flag itself, the cloth, might be a bit off, maybe that indeed. But then some of those flags are giant too. Maybe I should shut up. 🙂
An option for flags, I believe COBI (one of Lego's competitors) makes a 1x2 flag with the clip on the end. No idea how easy or difficult they are to acquire though
The 2x2 pyramid isn't new.. Unless I misunderstood as you were saying it's real. My monster fighter has those and that came out years ago. Anyways, love the videos. Keep up the good work

Likely yes. And thanks!

I reckon the bar holder with clip piece (11090) would be your best bet for flags. They come in white, red and dark blue so you could alternate them
what about those 1x1 rod role pieces for the flags? not sure what theyre called.
One of the best options I can think of for the flag is the 1x2 clear tile that came in the apolo V set. I think they are about $0.90 on brickowl.
I thought that too but they are too small
Honestly I think that typical 1x1 plate with clip on the side is small and nice way to have a flag. Though it is not that smooth as other pieces can be. You can also alter the colors in a tricolor pattern.
Yeah I considered that one but not sure about it having a stud on it or no.flag printing.
@@bricksculpt I guess the stud can mimic the flag waving in the air but yeah. The rest of the design is super smooth so the flags may stick out.
Im not going to lie. This is the best option
See what it looks like alternating them (Red, White, Blue) around the circle.
Great work as always. Is there some way you can use the benches to cover a few of the gaps?
