Are we not cautioned about using theater to promote the gospel? Are we not cautioned about attending the theater? Does the gospel not warn about trying to mingle darkness with light? How long will we slumber? Behold the bridegroom cometh!

My dad was a minister in the Philippines,we are not allowed to go to the theatre, those were the days,in the 70’s ,we have the old television but he guide us which to watched, funny thing is,when we watched there is a kissing scene,he will blocked himself so we can’t watched it,but now it’s different,we are even encouraged to watched certain types of movies.

Come on! Really? This is one of the way to capture the young people. We can't get rid of the idea that most of our youth have been entangled with technology. We need to be intelligent in this matter

Beloved context and understanding are important. We were admonished not to attend theater or engage in worldly amusements because of their effects on our character. The reason is because of the content of most movies (sexually explicit, profanity, violence etc). Also what takes place in most of these places are "seedy." Note that Satan uses mass media to influence minds away from Christ. We have to use these platforms wisely to spread God's truth and reclaim every avenue to promote God's word without being compromised. A movie about Christ is a great way to reach masses for Christ who may never step foot in a church. I am thinking that this movie is not really for Adventists who know the message but for people to be reached who do not know.

Refrain From All Theatrical Display-I have a message for those in charge of our work. Do not encourage the men who are to engage in this work to think that they must proclaim the solemn, sacred message in a theatrical style. Not one jot or tittle of anything theatrical is to be brought into our work. God's cause is to have a sacred, heavenly mold. Let everything connected with the giving of the message for this time bear the divine impress. Let nothing of a theatrical nature be permitted, for this would spoil the sacredness of the work. . I remember that it had to take a pandemic for churches to broadcast sermons, in order to reach people who would normally not attend church. The Bible is literary full of people that were imperfect, but were used by God. Murderers, adulterers, liars, etc. Maybe this actress was called by God to play this role. Imagine her reading some of the comment that she wasn't good enough to play the role, because of background. Fact is the message is being preached of the SDA church through this movie and i hope and pray that it will reach those God is working with.

I think about what Paul says in 1 Corinthians 9: 19-22. Jesus spent days ministering in Samaria, Moses & Joseph in Egypt, Daniel & his friends in Babylon. This is an evangelistic outreach not a movie to cater to Adventists. Satan always sees that the wrong light is applied to anything that might bring people closer to Jesus. I pray that many will come to a knowledge of God because of this.

The truth is this movie depicts a group of people who are searching the whole Bible for end time prophecy and bible truth that so many other denominations disavowed because it didn't agree with their traditions. Search the Scriptures for the truth and the truth will set you free.

I realised that from the first video when I saw those offshoots attack the church. So I thought about it and came down to three possible answers
    1. They were ignorant of the character of the person. Just a big flop in scrutinizing this out.
    2. The director isn't really taking Adventists as the primary consumer of the movie and so they used people the world knows so well. Tell the world movie won awards and the world literally watched it.
    3. The Australian church (is the one that did the movie and not the global church read the telly it to the world posters) outsourced that work to someone else to simply get the best characters who will meet the descriptions for each person for the movie. The movie industry is quite complex if you do some basic research and even the director of the movies are not responsible of everything folks see in the movies we see. It's likely number 3 is what we are seeing happening here.

I maybe in agreement with those who are criticizing the character who plays E.G White. When God needed an actor to bear his son, he chose a pure vessel, which he found in a young lady called Mary. I am not saying the actress had to be an SDA, but at least a Christian actress would be better for the role.

So let me get this straight, we would be much happier to get an Adventist actress who is not that good, to act as Ellen White? That means every single person in the movie has to be Adventist for us to be happy? Because I’m sure not everyone on the project was Adventist.
Perhaps we need to read the Bible and see just how much God has often used the least likely people to ensure that his work is done. Cyrus whom God calls His “anointed” (Isaiah 45:1), Rahab the prostitute whom God used to protect the Israelite spies, the woman at the well, to name but a few.
If we are so obsessed with how many non Adventists acted in this project, instead of doing our part to spread the good news that Jesus is coming again, then we seriously risk being the 5 foolish virgins. We have people who call themselves Adventists that do not even believe that Ellen White was a messenger from God, but instead we have time to point the finger at a girl who isn’t Adventist, a girl who does a fantastic job of depicting Ellen White in this movie? What is the matter with us??? And who knows how the Holy Spirit is working with this girl? Wouldn’t it be more Christlike to pray for her and indeed all those taking part in the project that they all will be touched by the hand of God in such a way that dedicate or re-dedicate their lives fully to Christ?
May God forgive us all 🙏🏽

I was a little let down. There was no reason given for what 1844 really was, the Day of Atonement in anti type, or the three angels messages. There was very little mention of salvation through Jesus. Although it was a bit of a history lesson on the SDA church I felt the heart of our church was left out.

The work in the large cities is to be done after Christ’s order, not after the order of a theatrical performance. It is not a theatrical performance that glorifies God, but the presentation of the truth in the love of Christ.-Testimonies For The Church 9:142 (1909). {Ev 206.3}. It is a more alluring form of mixing light with darkness (by mixing entertainment with evangelism or pop music with gospel words). One of the reasons God had to destroy the world with the flood.

The value of time is beyond computation. Christ regarded every moment as precious, and it is thus that we should regard it. Life is too short to be trifled away. We have but a few days of probation in which to prepare for eternity. We have no time to waste, no time to devote to selfish pleasure, no time for the indulgence of sin. It is now that we are to form characters for the future, immortal life. It is now that we are to prepare for the searching judgment. COL 342.2

I loved it and wish I could see it on the big screen as I haven’t been to the theatre in probably a decade. I’d like to see this to compare the two. It’s an accurate storyline of what I’ve read in EGW writings and the acting is amazing, especially by the girl who played Ellen’s character, actually everyone in it were amazing, like they you are witnessing it actually happening. This movie is at minimum 7 years old, so why is it now going to theaters and why is the name being changed. Now I just got out of Air Force basic training so I’m still catching up on things, but this one was confusing me because I’ve seen this movie many times. In my opinion, it is acceptable for our church's history to be recorded and shared worldwide as a way to promote our ministry globally. However, I have reservations about the idea of screening it in movie theaters. As a Filipino Seventh-day Adventist, we are taught to avoid places like bars, discotheques, and cinemas. It would be more appropriate for our church leader to have a dramatized version of our history created by our own artists from within the church, to be shown in our schools and on our church's TH-cam channel. This way, we can avoid the potential negative influence of cinemas on our youth and adults, and promote a more wholesome viewing experience.

🙏Principle is key! It’s time for us to study for ourselves. We need to understand there is an attack on what we stand for. Even the Conference in 1937 stood firmly against this. Prayerfully read this counsel. It’s lengthy but very necessary.
Ev 137 “I have a message for those in charge of our work. Do not encourage the men who are to engage in this work to think that they must proclaim the solemn message in a theatrical style. Not one jot or tittle of anything theatrical is to be brought into our work. God's cause is to have a sacred, heavenly mold. Let everything connected with the giving of the message for this time bear the divine impress. Let nothing of a theatrical nature be permitted, for this would spoil the sacredness of the work.”
Ev 139 “Our success will depend on carrying forward the work in the simplicity in which Christ carried it forward, without any theatrical display.”
Ev 396.2 “In our work we are not to go onto a hilltop to shine. We are not told that we must make a special, wonderful display. The truth must be proclaimed in the highways and the byways, and thus work is to be done by sensible, rational methods. The life of every worker, if he is under the training of the Lord Jesus Christ, will reveal the excellence of His life. The work that Christ did in our world is to be our example, as far as display is concerned. We are to keep as far from the theatrical and the extraordinary as Christ kept in His work. Sensation is not religion, although religion will exert its own pure, sacred, uplifting, sanctifying influence, bringing spiritual life, and salvation.”
11MR 338.1 “There is an abundance of theatrical performances in our world, but in its highest order it is without God.”
9MR 387.2 “Those who make use of devices that are theatrical in nature, to hold the attention of the people, lose the realization of the presence of Christ. Those who use so much time in preparing for their meetings, depending to a large extent on outward appearance to impress the people, give Jesus no opportunity to work on hearts. They mingle the common with the sacred.”
2MR 246.3 . “Satan's ruling passion is to pervert the intellect and cause men to long for shows and theatrical performances.”
AH 515.4 “The true Christian will not desire to enter any place of amusement or engage in any diversion upon which he cannot ask the blessing of God. He will not be found at the theater,”
AH 516.1 “To those who plead for these diversions we answer, We cannot indulge in them in the name of Jesus of Nazareth. The blessing of God would not be invoked upon the hour spent at the theater…. No one would wish to be found there when Christ shall come.”
AH 516.2 “There is no influence in our land more powerful to poison the imagination, to destroy religious impressions, and to blunt the relish for the tranquil pleasures and sober realities of life than theatrical amusements. The love for these scenes increases with every indulgence as the desire for intoxicating drink strengthens with its use. The only safe course is to shun the theater, the circus, and every other questionable place of amusement.”
General Conference Committee, March 10, 1937 “There is, first of all, a fundamental distinction between natural pictures, or pictures of real life, and pictures of dramatized theatrical plots. This is a basic line of demarcation. By the former are meant scenes which are reproduced through the motion-picture camera wholly of natural life…. In contrast, there are the motion pictures of dramatized theatrical plots, usually produced by professional actors and actresses. The very principle upon which these are constructed is inherently wrong, and cannot be approved or condoned by the church. The history and the present estate of theatrical drama show it to be opposed to the highest ideals of morality, and alien to spiritual life. Its themes are built upon human passion. Theatrical films are evil in their influence, and consequently unacceptable, because they confuse the thinking of our people regarding the Seventh-day Adventist attitude toward the theater, the opera, and novel reading; because they create an appetite for emotional reaction which can be satisfied only by further indulgence; and because they make an unwarranted play, upon the emotions. This is wrong, because emotional stimulation without appropriate action is destructive to character development. Pictures which play upon the emotions create an appetite for the sensational, causing the individual to live in the realm of the unreal, destroying responsiveness to duty, and resulting in emotional instability. The motion-picture house has so popularized the theater that millions are daily in attendance at exhibitions which can only exert an influence toward lowered standards of Christian purity. We believe that to no small degree it is responsible for the present breakdown of morality. There can therefore be no compromise here without tragic loss and fundamental mistake. While it may be necessary at times to go to theatrical buildings for evangelistic meetings, or to hear wholesome lectures or musical concerts, we should avoid, just as far as possible, attendance at places devoted to shows and theatrical performances.” With such basic principles clearly established and accepted in our selection of films, we are convinced that certain motion pictures can be used effectively and helpfully in God's cause, for purposes of education, enlightenment, and wholesome entertainment.”

I grew up Adventist but have very conflicting feelings about Ellen White as a prophet. Am I the only one who finds it Ironic that Ellen White was against movie theaters , games , amusement parks , and life insurance , yet the SDA church is now endorsing a movie on the same Ellen White who preached against them. lol. She was wrong about a lot of stuff. We need to be honest about that instead of pushing a movie in a theater that she would have never stepped foot into.

I think movie theatres then and now are totally different. I also think that technology can be used for good. Right now we are watching sermons online, we are chatting on you tube..times have changed. We may not be of the world but we are in the world and if the movie will bring someone to Christ, why not. By the way there's that very old movie abt Christ and his disciples we used to watch before sermons..here in Africa ..it was used to give us a better understanding of the life of Christ on earth with his disciples how we went about preaching and healing. Christ would be laughing with them and as a child l marvelled that Christ actually laughed. (Of course its very mild compared to the Passion of Christ) but then l think its a type of "if your conscience does not condemn you" type of thing. Some of the things she condemned back then should be taken in context l think

If we cant go out and witness , how will the movie witness ?
If our lives are not showing that we worship Christ , how do we expect people to turn to Christ because of a movie ?
NB: i am not sayjng the movie is wrong , nay
But let us start with the basics which are turning to Christ and living a life according to his way , that will be the best way to teach .

We can’t argue with counsel unless we don’t believe it.

It’s a movie and that women is an actress, it’s called acting. Just because she played a hooker in another movie doesn’t mean she is one. I believe that EG White was very instrumental in the forming of the SDA church and if the “actress” portrayed her properly then previous roles were not an issue. So attitudes such as objecting to that actress because of other films she appeared in is Ludicrous. No wonder other people from other denominations have strange ideas about your church. Now for clarification I believe SDA are correct, but I also think a LOT of SDA alienate others because of attitudes like objecting to an ACTRESS because of previous roles. It’s called “acting” for a reason!

To all those that are using the argument about the actress playing Ellen White past as criticism. Do you remember that the woman at the well in the book of John chapter4? The woman at the well after her contact with Jesus brought the entire town she lived in back to Jesus. In the end result the people’s response to her was you said that he is the Christ and you were right, but now we have seen and heard for ourselves. Jesus came to seek and save the lost. In the case of this woman of Samaria his interaction with her changed her entire life, thoughts and direction; which in turn changed the whole village the woman lived. Ask yourself, What are you seeking to do?

The actress is just that, an actress. If she plays the part well then that is fine. How she lives and other gigs are irrelevant to her role in this film. We cannot see The Hopeful because it was in the theaters for just a couple of days it is gone, but the Tell the World Film is available in full length on YT! It was on YT for 7 years. @@michaelmaina990 🙏Principle is key!

I saw it and thought it was a good representation of a snap shot of the history of Adventism. I see a lot of negative comments about it but as an Adventist I thought the movie represented the story of church history. They put the prophecy where Ellen White said God showed her a war over slavery, the civil war would take place and well as we all know it did. I thought that was a good thing put in perhaps that alone with peak the interest of anyone who doesn't know about Ellen White to research her writings.
With regard to the actress, God uses even sinners to His glory. He used evil people in the Old Testament.

Lawrence, Youve taken the typical Lukewarm attitude of the Adventist church, of remaining non-committal when it comes to touchy questions, just like many pastors I've talked to when asked if they took the vax or not, and whether they would recommend it or not.
    For this reason I will not bother to give my personal view of whether I would recommend (and do myself) attending the cinema to watch this 'good' movie. But will put forward a SOP quote instead: The Theater the Hotbed of Immorality.--Among the most dangerous resorts for pleasure is the theater. Instead of being a school for morality and virtue, as is so often claimed, it is the very hotbed of immorality. Vicious habits and sinful propensities are strengthened and confirmed by these entertainments. Low songs, lewd gestures, expressions, and attitudes deprave the imagination and debase the morals. Every youth who habitually attends such exhibitions will be corrupted in principle. There is no influence in our land more powerful to poison the imagination, to destroy religious impressions, and to blunt the relish for the tranquil pleasures and sober realities of life than theatrical amusements. The love for these scenes increases with every indulgence as the desire for intoxicating drink strengthens with its use. The only safe course is to shun the theater, the circus, and every other questionable place of amusement. {AH 516.2}
