  • Between the 1970s and 1990s, the European stonechat (saxicola rubicola) declined in numbers in the Netherlands, as did the whinchat. This did not happen at the same pace everywhere, there were large regional differences. Around 1975 the number was estimated at about 5000 pairs, around 1983 this was only 2000. After that came a remarkable recovery. The number of breeding pairs increased by more than 5% per year in the period 1990-2005, and in 2020 about 18,000 pairs were breeding again in the Netherlands. The bird benefits greatly from modern nature management: the removal of the flood plains from agricultural use and the restoration of heather biotopes.
