@@moreflexmoresex3011 people who buy madden games have low emotional intelligence and wont spot tension in their relationship because they probably don't see the tension in their own. Joke explained, and thus ruined.
The part that annoyed the hell out of me about this movie was when James decided that the smart thing to do is leave the room with only one entrance where they had a plan that (tragically) could be successful, to go running in the dark woods with the gun, alone. And he is immediately knocked out because obviously. Like their plan would have worked. They'd either be able to shoot one of the strangers or the strangers would give up because they're at a stalemate. But anything would be better than leaving the only potential way they both could have survived
YES! That’s always the first point in the movie where I’m like c’mon who would DO that?! I get it, if you just blew your best friend/brothers head off anyone would absolutely lose their mind, but the *let’s separate and both run in different directions outside* is the stupidest move to make and it becomes hard to watch
Yep and the film could have written its way out of this solution too by having the Strangers flush them out by setting a fire and filling the room with smoke. They'd have to escape through a window or something thus losing there advantage. The film would've been much better if the characters actually were smart and put up a decent fight but still lost in the end anyway because the killers were just one step ahead of them and smarter.
If my girlfriend and I were in this home invasion situation, I would have took the gun and my girlfriend and run into the woodline. I would have kept running for miles until we come across another house and ask them to call 911. Staying in their house was so stupid.
the scene where james didn't turn around when the masked man is behind me, i feel like james subconsciously knew he was behind him but was not ready to turn around and face the masked man. he was buying time because he just wasn't ready.
I've seen this movie like 5 times, and the most recent watching gave me the hilarious idea that when the friend is shot, The Man In The Mask is like 'OH SHIT WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT' and then hurriedly runs to Dollface like 'Jesus Christ he just killed his friend, wheres the red paint?? I got an idea!"
This movie probably got under the skin of every girl named Tamara. Imagine going on a date in 2008 to see this movie, only for the villian to ask if you're there.
Yes! The relationship problems make the protagonists relatable to the viewer, making the movie scarier as it conveys the message that this could happen to anyone
One of my favorite horror films of all time. I remember watching it in theaters when it came out and just being absolutely gobsmacked, I was both terrified and I wanted to see it again(which I did, many times). And I love that you brought up the 70’s influence, Straw Dogs(1971), See No Evil(1971) and Black Christmas(1974) walked so The Strangers(2006) could run.
I went to see this at a matinee , I was the only one I’m the theater ! A couple showed up late & out loud I thanked them ! Empty theater was especially creepy !
" Unless you are still annually buying madden, you will notice ...." lmao, why the random shot 😅. Im not guilty, so i found that random sentence funny af. 😂
I wonder if anyone has ever made a movie like this where the person that is being terrorized happens to be a serial killer and turns the tables Wouldn’t that be great?
Nah, I disagree about the scene with Glenn Howerton's character being frustrating for not turning around. As far as he was concerned he already checked each corner and I love the feeling the dread building up with Baghead slowly creeping behind him as "Mama Tried" plays. And even if he DID turn around, would that really change much? Baghead had an axe at the ready to bring right down onto him before he gets shot. So if he turned around he'd probably just be met with an axe to the face and the payoff we got instead I think made for a much more impactful scene. But anyway, I love The Strangers. Definitely one of my favorite horror movies of recent times and I love the slow burn and build-up it has. The shot with Baghead watching Kristen in the kitchen is one of my favorites in all of horror as is the simple motive of the killers just being because they were home. I really don't know how I feel about this upcoming prequel trilogy because what makes the trio so scary is how we don't know anything about them. We don't know what their day jobs are or what their relationships are (are they a family? friends? psychos that found each other online?). I'm worried that a prequel (trilogy at that) is going to give us more information on the trio than we need to know. I also seem to recall at the end of the movie one of them says "It will be easier next time.", implying this was the first time they did something like this. It just makes a prequel feel really unnecessary.
One of my favorite suspense films ever. I'll never forget the horror of seeing baghead standing in the living room ad the theater-goers realized at different times, and you no0t only heard that sensaton, but felt it. My mom still denies ever seeing the movie to this day lmao
James's frustrating behavior made sense to me on my first viewing, as it had me wondering if he was putting a bag on his head and terrorizing the girl who turned down his proposal as a bit of an overreaction. Logically it doesn't hold up when they finally show James and the other guy in the same frame, but emotionally I think that was the reason he's so nonchalant at first, to make you just wonder about him, further empathizing with Kristen.

RE: The Glenn Howerton Sequence Gonna have to hard disagree with you here. It's a cliche to say so, but I think we have a tendency to forget that most characters in horror movies don't KNOW they're in a horror movie. If your friend called you up in the middle of the night ("like a firefly...") and told you he just got into an awkward situation with his girlfriend and needs a ride home... If you get there and there's loud music playing and broken dishes lying around, you're not gonna immediately jump to the conclusion that there must be a murderous home invasion afoot. You're gonna think they probably had a fight and are now off sulking in separate rooms. AT WORST you might fear that things escalated and one of them wound up hurting the other. All the while, the natural human tendency to avoid facing up to unpleasant truths til absolutely necessary is going to have you rationalizing whatever fears you DO have to yourself. I think Howerton's actions are perfectly realistic and reasonable here; he has no reason to suspect any sort of outside threat.
He got attacked in his car before going into the house though. One of the strangers smashes his window which is why he gets out and goes inside, so he absolutely knew that there was something more than a bad argument going on. Then with the way he’s slowly moving and checking around corners, I just don’t see how he isn’t aware that there’s a threat around. If he wasn’t attacked before going in I probably wouldn’t have AS MUCH of an issue with it, but with that happening it just makes it impossible for me to see it that way. If getting your window smashed and then finding the door open with everything in disarray inside isn’t enough to make him think there’s an outside threat then I’m not sure what it would take
It's been a while; I don't remember that part. In that case, why not get the Hell outta Dodge and drive to the nearest police station or something? I guess he's just a really good friend... Where did this projectile come from? Were any of the Strangers actually visible from where he was sitting?
Yeah I’d imagine he just wanted to try and help his brother in that situation. We don’t see where it comes from, but his front windshield is smashed while he’s calling James before heading in
He doesn’t know he’s in a horror movie, sure, but he’s fully aware there was a break in. In REAL LIFE, not a horror movie, if you walked into a house and saw signs of a break in, your head would be on a swivel. Real people don’t just conveniently look in one direction like that. Which is not to mention the lack of hearing, peripheral vision, or general awareness that movie characters lack in these moments when they would be fully present in a real life situation.
"unless you're still annually buying Madden..." That friggin killed me! 😂 I think I need to revisit this movie. I've only seen it once and that was over a decade ago. I remember it being pretty suspenseful.
I love the film and agree with all your points. There are some decisions that are baffling but the movie is very scary. The first time my wife and I watched it she asked me to keep the lights on in the house when we went to sleep that night. She did not want any darkness anywhere. The actors in this are brilliant and the bleakness is stifling at times. I have only watched the film about four times but it really is a gut punch, especially that ending. I have actually grown to like the sequel “Prey at Night” more. I will be curious to hear your thoughts on it. Best always my friend
I definitely agree that they act stupid as far as how they handle things, but I also kinda got the impression that James and Kristen might be…sorta dumb. Like, I felt like the botched proposal, and then the tense awkwardness afterwards, implied that he didn’t really understand what was happening around him or was oblivious, and she was overthinking things or “paranoid.” Maybe I’m reaching, lol, but yeah, always got the impression at least that James was just a dumb guy to start.
I feel like some of the decisions are partially "not believing the woman who knows something bad is happening" which sadly happens in real life. I think that explains his quick hall glance and immediate dismissal.
I don’t understand how people find home invasion movies scary. Like the victims just do everything completely wrong to a point where I’m just yelling in frustration at the tv.
Love this video so much! You’re one of the few TH-camrs who have talked about this movie (number 1 on my scariest movies ever list) with such reverence ❤❤❤ This movie creeped me out so much I begged my best friend to sleep at my house for a week. She had to spend the days with her husband then come over to my house for a sleepover later in the night for a whole week. I was 30 and had two young children. My husband (now ex) was away for work 😂
I was a real weenie when it came to horror up until my late teens/early twenties. I remember this is one of the first "real" scary movies I got myself to watch, probably when I was 15 or 16, and it stuck with me for a LONG time because (unlike with horror movies about demons/ghosts/etc.) I was like "oh shit, this is a thing that could actually happen irl"... And now home invasion horror is one of my favourite subgenres. 😅
Eh I thought the guy was kind of fucked up from the engagement thing. I think you don’t give that enough credit. He just broke up with his fiancée, most of us are crying in our apartment for a week and he’s now immediately being asked to snap into hero mode…and care about the person who broke his heart. I liked he was in a bit of a dumb fog.
This movie is incredibly scary! One of my favorites. Those 2 boys that were spreading the word of God and walked into the house of the brutal massacre was terrifying and heartbreaking. The trauma they endured would most likely haunt them the rest of their lives. I really wanted to see them in the sequel sharing their experience. At the beginning when the boy Jordan called 911 telling the operator "there's blood everywhere" still haunts me to this day.
I have a party in Baldur's Gate 3 that I like to call... _The Rangers_ 🏹 Of course Minsc is in it. And yes, Boo is the leader... *duh?* 🐹 ("Strangers", "Rangers" ...it, like, you know... it rhymes? Look, listen... it's late, I've got nothing else, and I'm currently playing while listening to this in the background, so... you know what - you get it, it's fine. Shut up... _I love you._ Shut up.)
I appreciate you and all your views. I have been a fan for about a year now. This is a most haunting movie, especially the kill scene at the end. I literally felt that. This was foreign film also based off or real events by children. I think it was Italian. It as far as I know was the inspiration for the American version. This is one of my fave movies, so please disprove this if I am wrong. ✨
hey there! Don’t know if this was something the movie did knowingly, but the ‘looping record’ at around the ten minute mark is actually the same looping song in the analog horror ‘No Through Road’ here on TH-cam! It’s maybe one of the oldest analog horrors, certainly the oldest on TH-cam! I recommend watching it whenever you have the chance!
it made no sense to me that the same guy who lit a fire for her before he left is dismissing her terror. and even when he sees his car smashed up he still needs more convincing. hated that
Turned out the first "prequel" was a mostly beat for beat remake of the original. All your talk about needing to care about the couple was spot on because the they didn't in the new one and it was awful. Add to that knowing everything that was going to happen absolutely killed any drama.
It's one of those where as my wife & sat watching it, I accurately predicted nearly every move/action/inaction/result/stereotypical Villains Win In The End, etc before or as it occurred ...not patting myself on the back as this movie is _very_ predictable, and I've been watching horror flicks for many decades. Still and all, wrote this one off as a paint by numbers clunker. Caught part of it again many yrs later on a free movie app and it didn't seem as insultingly bad as I'd remembered it. However....
The movie has great intentions, starts very well, and builds the right suspense in the first part, but loses a lot in the second part. These three intruders, who keep wandering around or inside the house without any logical sense, without a plan-do they want to kill them? Or Torture them? What do they want? The scene where she hurts her leg and then starts crawling aimlessly for 20 meters to the shed, which seems like 500 meters but is actually at most 20 meters, while the intruders circle around her without doing nothing. The boyfriend who disappears after the gun shot, and then reappears out of nowhere. I don't know, there are too many randomly executed scenes thrown in without any logical sense, which make the viewer bored and lose the initial engagement.
Id love a Strangers type movie where they prey on a couple in a house, but the couple are either crazier than the strangers, or they picked the wrong house and they end up trying to play their game and find out the couple are John Wick level threats and they underestimated the situation
The most annoying bad decision is when they separate. Why would you do that? There is 2 of you against 3 of them, and you have a shotgun. Just a little strategic thinking should have been enough to survive. Come on, dude.

I love the real life inspiration which is the Keddie Cabin murders. Really grounded yet horrifying
No it's not.. It's from an experience director Brian Bertino had as a child.
Just wanna say I just found this channel and man I’m really loving your videos you definitely deserve more recognition💯💯
This is one of my comfort movies. If you know, you know. I'm a new subscriber! I am loving your videos.
Thanks so much!
I completely forgot Gemma Ward was in the strangers! I was absolutely obsessed with her when I was a teenager 😅
I've seen all of the Strangers movies, so far I have to say the 2008 one was the best
"unless you're still annually buying Madden..."
That friggin killed me! 😂
I think I need to revisit this movie.
Cheers Ben! Just shot the prey at night review this morning
Great vid! Can't wait for the new ones but I didn't realize how quickly the sequels were being released
One of my all-time faves, this defined my ultimate fear for me.
To be fair I know plenty of white guys who has this “I’m invincible” complex.
My husband (now ex) was away for work 😂
Oh wow yeah that’ll do it haha! Thanks for the kind words
First, always a treat to wstch one of your videos as I wind down in the evening
Thank you!
This movie scared the crap out of me when I saw it in theaters
What kind of narcissist proposes at a wedding?
Hahaha I’ve seen that it is ridiculous
I remember watching this as a kid with my cousin and this movie scared the hell out of me.
I took my gf to see this in high school. I was trying to act all unfazed but by the end we were both shook. 😂
I am NOT excited to watch the new prequel of this brilliant horror movie
This movie is incredibly scary! One of my favorites. Those 2 boys that were spreading the word of God and walked into the house of the brutal massacre was terrifying and heartbreaking. The trauma they endured would most likely haunt them the rest of their lives. I really wanted to see them in the sequel sharing their experience. At the beginning when the boy Jordan called 911 telling the operator "there's blood everywhere" still haunts me to this day.
The madden burn is great btw lmao
The fact that those still sell is wild lmao
I saw this in theaters in 2008 when I was in 9th grade. A gaggle of 16 year old girls, we thought this movie was scary.
I have a party in Baldur's Gate 3 that I like to call... _The Rangers_ 🏹
Of course Minsc is in it. And yes, Boo is the leader... *duh?* 🐹
("Strangers", "Rangers" ...it, like, you know...
I recommend watching it whenever you have the chance!
it made no sense to me that the same guy who lit a fire for her before he left is dismissing her terror. and even when he sees his car smashed up he still needs more convincing. hated that
You deserve way more subs ! Great channel , sir !
Thank you Christian!
One of the greatest slasher movies of all time
Keep it up bro, love watching these while welding at work 🤣 makes my day go heaps quicker. 🇦🇺
“Smoking a dart” you just made me miss home so badly 😅 - someone stuck in the states 😂🇨🇦
Jayzus bi yer a long throw out! I’ll pour a bottle of maple syrup for ya
I was kinda addicted to this back in the day
1:51 now that’s a 5 ⭐️ man if I’ve ever seen one
Turned out the first "prequel" was a mostly beat for beat remake of the original. All your talk about needing to care about the couple was spot on because the they didn't in the new one and it was awful. Add to that knowing everything that was going to happen absolutely killed any drama.
It’s time for a twist , like they visit the wrong house. The hunters become the hunted by a vampire who played the victim to feed on the strangers
I have yet to revisit this film, but it bored me like nobody's business. I love Prey At Night. Chapter 1 looks like it's gonna be fun.
However....
Subscribed.. just for your intro.
My power went completely out at 11pm watching this video omg my heart was pounding
Id love a Strangers type movie where they prey on a couple in a house, but the couple are either crazier than the strangers, or they picked the wrong house and they end up trying to play their game and find out the couple are John Wick level threats and they underestimated the situation
This is slow in places but it's a good place film. Great video as always 😊🐾💜👍👋
This was my first favorite scary movie!! No way!!
It’s a great one!
The most annoying bad decision is when they separate. Why would you do that? There is 2 of you against 3 of them, and you have a shotgun. Just a little strategic thinking should have been enough to survive. Come on, dude.
If you listen to true crime it’s a normal thing
