One other inaccuracy I noticed on the new Hall Castle: There's these weird red covers on what I think are tool boxes at the front of the tender just behind the fireman's plate, but these should be black as they are on the Castle Castle and on the real Olton Hall. No idea why they did that as it's just more work and paint to get a small detail wrong; they'd literally have been better off just painting the whole tender interior black.
I think the original Hogwarts Express was my first model locomotive purchase. It was the basic oval track, but it had a track mat based on HP and the Chamber of Secrets. Nothing much, it was literally just a poster of the movie. It had two coaches with it, I believe, it was a semi-decent runner, but I don't remember its pulling strength being that great. I didn't really use it that much as my collection expanded...
You can definitely see areas Hornby have done some "value engineering" on the new model, while putting the price up. Thanks for the great comparison. I'd like to see more of these sort of older compared to new videos if you have the resources for it.
If I recall correctly, HORNBY didn't make their original Hogwarts Express sets with a GWR Castle by mistake, they did it because the only Hall tooling they had was a super old Tri-ang one. As they recently made a new tooling for the Hall class they re-released the Hogwarts Express to have the correct locomotive.
Surely the best option if you want accuracy is to repaint rename and renumber a BACHMANN 49xx Hall Class 4-6-0 locomotive released in 2020. [See Sam’s Trains Review from Oct. 2020]. Forget both of Hornby’s ex-Airfix Castle (1980’s) and the ex-Triang/Hornby Hall (1970’s)!!
The Hall in this video was released in 2014, and the Bachmann Hall which Sam reviewed is actually in their 2006 Catalogue, meaning Bachmann's Hall has been around for at least 16 years, whereas Hornby retooled theirs 8 years ago
I genuinely think Hornby puts that awful attempt at a lamp upfront, so that serious (in terms of accuracy) modellers couldn't get a cheap hall class and therefore have to spend more for the same model.
Hi Sam, I believe there have been upgrades between the two issues you've reviewed here. I have an R1095 Order of the Phoenix model which is an upgraded Castle class body version. I think it came out around 2009, though I could be wrong on that. It's 372g, DCC Ready and has an upgraded motor. It has sprung buffers, the decent headboard, but plastic cylinder & crosshead assembly. It has the more basic cab, the plastic chimney and the old whistles. There are rivets on the buffer plate but not the running plates.
Was just aboutnto bring that up! Not sure about the more specific details but I remember being surprised a few months ago that my goblet of fire Castle class had tender pickups
Hey same you should get the Bachman hogwarts express I have one at my house and the engine is all metal the tender is plastic and metal and has a very accurate light
Hi Sam, great video. There was another version between the two you show here. I have the first one and the second (not the third which is the newer version seen in this video) The second version I have has an LED, can motor, no flywheel, nice bearings and hardwired pick ups. It ran reasonably smooth... It also has traction tires on the centre wheels of the drivers. (which led to its demise) I converted both of mine to DCC using early TCS decoders, After watching this video I decided to take them out of storage and give them a run (first time in ten years) The one with the LED did two laps of the track and then the main gear on the driver slipped. The plastic had become so brittle it cracked. So that one is now out of action. I suspect the traction tyres on these wheels placed a huge load on this gear during fast stops and starts. The first one with the ringfield motor still runs fine. I also have a Bachmann version (DC only) and that runs smoother than both of the Hornby versions. I would love to see a premium version of this locomotive. I have Trix, Proto Heritage and MTH Steam locos all DCC with sound and they are superb runners that crawl perfectly below 1 scale mph. . The Hornby product feels like a toy by comparison unfortunately. (you get what you pay for) If a premium version was ever produced I would not hesitate to buy it.
I guess: As Hornby also did produce the AC Version for maerklin with tender pickups and working front light (The AC Version had the Pickuo-shoe and decoder on tender, but did use original DC motor in engine) , they adopted that to their own model, when redoing it.
Great to see these two finally compared! Got one of the new versions of the loco myself which I've actually painted into a glossy finish because I think it improves the overall look a bit, as I've always thought neither model ever quite got the paintwork quite right. Awesome video though!
I actually have the newer one that was dcc ready but I fitted it with a tts decoder from a Hornby p2 mikado. I paid $138 for the model counting taxes and shipping fees. I fitted the engine with all of the good features that the old castle class had onto the hall class model. I also fitted it with a headlamp from a Bachmann reading i10sa consolidation.
Great review, I have the Hogwarts, old Castle class. First time I serviced it, was bit of a puzzle. A little later I purchased a Dapol 150/2 sprinter. The motor is the same Ringfield motor, the magnet was in poor condition, but I was able to source another one by using the parts list as reference from the Castle class!
I've done a video potentially for TH-cam where I've gloss finished Hornby's rebuilt W1 Hush Hush in Garter Blue. They seem to be going through a phase of using that strange coarse glittery gold paint (almost custom metal flake). It doesn't look good in its as supplied finish, with text characters being hard to read. However, add a clear varnish on top and the gold suddenly lights up and looks wonderful. It makes me wonder if their gold is really part of a two-pack matt base and gloss lacquer paint system, as used by car makers. So it may be worth a try to just put a bit of gloss varnish or clear coat across that Headboard.
The older ‘castle’ class does have tender pick ups, but only on one side, as the copper drawbar is used to transfer power. I prefer the older one! Never liked that huge bulb sticking out on the new one.
Awesome review! Since you did the Hornby Hogwarts Express, so do you have any plans of reviewing the Bachmann Hogwarts Express that was released in America? That would bring these two Hornby versions back for more comparison.
The Bachmann offering used the existing Bachmann (ex-Mainline?) Hall (OO scale). The Hornby Castle was a much better loco, even though it was the wrong class.
@@adrianwintle5284 Mainline (Palitoy) never released a Hall Class. Manor Class 78xx 4-6-0, 28xx/38xx 2-8-0, Mogul 43xx/93xx 2-6-0, 56xx 0-6-2T, 57xx 0-6-0T Pannier Tank, and Collett’s “Baby Castle” 2251 Class 0-6-0 tender locos only. Airfix released the Castle Class 4-6-0 and the Dean’s Goods 0-6-0. Only Hornby and Bachmann have released a 00 Hall Class 4-6-0 locomotive.
I mean my missus would love either one but I'd rather work on the old one and try and bring it up to par with the new one because in my opinion I prefer the old one but also would it be possible to essentially switch the headboards over?

Wow 🤩 Sam amazing video would consider more debasement but I know that’s takes a long time because of your salvage or scrap videos other then that five stars and a little recommendation from reviewing the southeastern high speed locomotive for only £95 only the train and I don’t know if you can get it in a pack. No offense. But didn't bachmann try to make a few of these? Now we need to know what train brand is better at making the Hogwarts Express. Bachmann? Or hornby? And probably a other one just to fair.
Not a fan of that LED poking out from the smokebox door on teh new one, looks just like the drilled a hole and shoved it in XD too bad they did not make a proper lamp there in the middle like it supposed to have, or yeah, just did not have any lamp at alllike on the old one I think.
hey Sam, just a suggestion, could you possibly make your next 3d printed loco something from the Irish broad gauge as we have literally zero ready to run models, let alone cheap ones........ Again just a suggestion, thanks.
Turns out my Half Blood Prince set is fairly rare, its a combination of old and new Hornby stock, it is the older Castle Class body with the light yet it has a modern chassis with the standard 3 pole Hornby motor and tender pickups, but on mine the QC was bad on it since mine had the headboard missing and the screws had been over tightened breaking the mounts but I've not seen another set for sale.
I have every version of the Hogwarts express that Hornby have released included the gold plated version, yes the earlier ones were the best, very easy to service, very heavy and great runner, I also do have a Bachmann Hogwarts express and it’s really shiny compared to hornby, it is quite smart so I sprayed a hornby one in gloss lacquer 👍🏻 looks great too. The ones I have also do have tender pickups, should be a metal strip on the drawbar that connects the two electrically.
Hi Sam, great video comparison between the expresses but was there could there have been a third. I have the original which looks better for the details of front name plate, no LED and pulling power but have a a version that has the LED lamp, smaller front plate but not dcc connection to tender. It does have a dcc slot on top of the motor and is dcc fitted!! I’m going to recheck it but don’t recall having to undo the cable connection when I serviced it last year… three not two Hogwarts “Castles” Epresses, now that’s truly Hornby magic!!! All best Marc
Seems like some 'Sam Customising'0 is Required here. Eg. SWOP that God awful name Plate on the Front of the 1st to the 2nd version. But, You will need Harrys wand to fix that Awful front light on the 2nd. Typical Hornby Cutting Corners all over the Place and increasing the £££..! Good video Sam..!! Cheers All, kim in Oz. 😎
Thanks Sam. The lamp is in the wrong place on the new loco and I would have thought that someone would have painted the the controls. Just like the Lionel G gauge and the Hornby Gauge 1 which are both battery powered. The Hornby loco has traction tyres and the Lionel one has steel wheels, same loco but at different prices including coaches and remote controller, even the track is the same. Back to the 00 gauge, the new Hogwarts Express is more oriented to the toy than collectors that's why some people have bought the Bachmann set when it was released although it is no longer in production but the Bradford Exchange sell the kit underlicence with added extras with 12 editions.
I'd have swapped the nameplates on the smokeboxes around, and a few other modifications, to combine the two into one fantastic looking model. lovely video! Hope you're well.
What a wizard video...Sam, you have woven your magic again...big differences but new Hall is the winner...you can place a small straight in your S bend going up the hill by the 3 trees, all locos will run better..this is physics where you have counteracting forces working on a moving object...you will see a big difference. You can also improve the corner by placing half curve of greater radius before your main curve...this reduces the forces acting on a moving object..tip for everyone...
I usta have the old model the motors in them are terrible, sent mine off to hornby 3 times because of the motors burning out ended up selling it after the 3rd motor.
Why oh why did Hornby originally release this train set, knowing that the loco was the wrong class? I know that train sets are, for the most part, supposed to be a relatively inexpensive way into railway modelling and that a newly tooled loco would cost a lot to produce. Why not then use their current Hall class but with some simple upgrades to make it at least a more acceptable model for a set? Or am I just sounding naive here? Best, Pete.
I finally got out of house as it has raining for 3 months, and my first store was the hobbies and toy's store and I was shocked to see the prices have doubled in prices, $550 for each engine and carriages I didn't bother, sadly I might have to just watch TH-cam video's, 😠
Well, logically Hogwarts Castle WOULD be a Castle. It's the film company that made the mistake choosing a Hall, although perhaps that's the only GW loco that was available when the first film was made
Hey Sam I have a Question....maybe you can remember.....may i ask what was the title of video where the small green 0-4-0 tank locomotive exploded? I was trying to find it. Cheers mate and have a good one!
There is one massive flaw with that older Castle- the crosshead slide bars. They are pretty thin and made of plastic, so when I suffered a derailment with my 'Hogwarts Castle' Castle, it naturally decided to completely bend one of the crossheads round! It was fixable, but either way its quite the fault!
My hogwarts express from 2002 works brilliant runs brilliant and can still run really well. It can pull a lot too and just in general a nice runner. My Hornby never had the head plate. And it was metal the whistle and that. Hornby have i think really regressed. One i got in Ireland must been a earlier version i got it when Harry Potter chamber of secrets came out
Very glad to hear that James - they are decent runners for sure! Wonder if you did get an earlier version, did you have it from new?? Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Decent comparison between the two models here Sam, I have a hogwarts castle myself which is the version where the castle class is used instead of the hall class, will have to look for the headboard because on mine it’s broken off.

Keep up the good work as always
Hi Sam, can you pls do a new train spotting video with the normal Engines. so like: Mallard or the P2
I could get the new starters set for €279, but I choose to buy the old locomotive only second hand for only €60
Where can or should i buy the new one?
Hey can you do a video of the GWR train or the Amtrak train
Thanks Sam 🪄
Sam I love your videos and you inspire me
No offense. But didn't bachmann try to make a few of these? Now we need to know what train brand is better at making the Hogwarts Express. Bachmann? Or hornby? And probably a other one just to fair.
I have the older of the two locos and can’t fault it an have it running regularly on my line I can’t get over the stupid LED on the new version
Not a fan of that LED poking out from the smokebox door on teh new one, looks just like the drilled a hole and shoved it in XD too bad they did not make a proper lamp there in the middle like it supposed to have, or yeah, just did not have any lamp at alllike on the old one I think.
I had an uncle who thought that the Hogwarts Express was actually Flying Scotsman. I have no idea why
Uuhm, my old one runs amazing on dcc!
That’s strange , my Hornby Castle class hogwarts castle has an LED on the front and doesn’t have a copper chimney 🤔 .
I can't get over the LED on the new one
You are a wizard Harry
Honestly wasn't aware they added a second "version"...
Another fabulous review, thanks as always Sam 👍🙏🏻
Why not combine the two trains into one super dupa Hoggers Express?
I have the Olton Hall version also in red, bought it December 2021. Unusual to see a Hall in red, but it looks cool!
hey Sam, just a suggestion, could you possibly make your next 3d printed loco something from the Irish broad gauge as we have literally zero ready to run models, let alone cheap ones........
Very cool indeed
Thanks very much Jerry! :D
I quite like them both Sam :)
Yeah they both have their merits don't they?? :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains your welcome and Indeed!
I still hate that cold LED
Awesome video Sam's trains
Thank you Brian! :D
@@SamsTrains you're welcome my dear friend
There was sort of a third version which was 'Olton Hall' in GW markings but with the HP red coloured body and tender. Rare model.
Amazing
the hall king castle look the same
Awesome video today Sam I still need to get the hogworts locomotive
Thanks very much James - they are good fun! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam how come hornby don't make parts for some locos anymore, like the Dean Single there are no spare wheels?
Cheers Jasper & Willow
That's a good question - it's a pity that they don't!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam
really good video sam! when is the next salvage or scrap?
Thank you! It's coming pretty soon :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I feel like if you get the licensing agreement for a popular movie, you should make the proper model.
haha exactly... subtly mentions the Railway Children return ;)
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Now I know that we are looking at the train from the films but Harry Potter is a book
hold on a minut.... this loco has a br numberplate, is the line to hogwarts operated by British railways?
Hornby made a mistake ? IMPOSSIBLE !
Hi sam
Why does it say I’m alone when I translate it
I usta have the old model the motors in them are terrible, sent mine off to hornby 3 times because of the motors burning out ended up selling it after the 3rd motor.
Best, Pete.
Because at the time they didn't have a Hall class. They'd inherited the old Triang Hall moulds, but had altered these to produce Saints instead.
Oooh that! It's the guide to modelrailwaymanship - one of my April fools videos!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
They didn’t make a mistake, they didn’t have a Hall when they first released it
Sam you should try some Bachmann China stuff if you come across any, please.
Hey Sam, I had a blast with another guy at soccer a few minutes ago. But you made my day better!
Hm
Could you not add weights under the facade to allow the loco to pull more?
Decent comparison between the two models here Sam, I have a hogwarts castle myself which is the version where the castle class is used instead of the hall class, will have to look for the headboard because on mine it’s broken off.
Have you seen my email Sam?
I have the latest version at my house.
That's awesome Joshua! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
A couple days until my birthday 28 days until my birthday I got a good deal on a phone Scotland is 50 bucks I still have more money
