  • No matter how hard we try, it’s impossible to stay young forever. The same is true for your tattoos. They’re going to get older and they’re going to change, that’s a given. The million dollar question is, will they look like crap in 30 years? Our panel of artists talk about how they think their tattoos are going to look a couple decades down the road. And you know things are going to get heated as they debate which styles will, and won’t, age well.
    Inked has rounded up all of your favorite tattooers for another season of Tattoo Artists React. This season we’ll grill them about the biggest mistake they’ve ever made, how they approach doing job stoppers, what it feels like to see that their work has been covered up and more. You’ll marvel as they struggle to figure out which celebrities aren’t inked and laugh until your sides hurt as they tell us about the worst clients they’ve ever had to deal with. It’s going to be a season filled with excitement, hilarity and even the occasional tear. New episodes will be posted every Friday.

    I worked at a nursing home and had a patient who had a bunch of tattoos on his upper body. He had so many cool stories about how he got all of them, and he always said "your skin will get ugly and saggy when you're old anyways - at least my saggy skin is colorful and interesting". Now that's my go to answer whenever someone asks me if I'm not worried about how I'll look when I'm old

      It would be irrelevant unless they are still tattooing now with modern, current inks/machines/styles/etc because their old experience is completely obsolete and pretty worthless for modern times. Sure, they can give some basic general advice, but for most of the stuff it would be irrelevant. It's a lot like baby boomers giving young people advice today. Almost anything they could say as advice is entirely worthless because nothing today works similarly to how it did when they were doing it. Being older and having experience doesn't mean that the experience is still useful when times have changed so much.

      @@MaPleWoRlDOrder ok but.. you realize we'll be able to say the same thing in the future right? like was there a single innovative breakthrough in tattooing in the past 30 yrs that breaks this analogy and will never happen again? Or will the industry always evolve b/c it is literally one of the most basic things known to humanity? So regardless of what they used they still have experience in the industry and they also saw advancements in the field and could tell you how significant they were and how impactful they were compared to what we have now. There are 2 comments under this post that just reek of entitled zoomerism. It feels like you think that 60 yr old people lived a life 100 yrs ago.. Think it through.. You are saying the experience of someone who gave a tattoo in 1990 is completely irrelevant to todays tattooing? lol gimme a break kid. i don't even give a fuck so don't at me. pce

You can still see some of the spots showing through in areas but it wasn’t painful and it healed just fine. He had no issues with tattooing over the skin even though I was worried for a bit. I also have it over both my lower calfs and shins and I hate the look of it so I’ll be getting my legs done next

    I've always thought the argument of oh "that'll look like shit in 20 30 years" is a dumb argument. That literally applies to everything. Your body changes over time no matter how well it's done it'll look different and fade at the end of the day it's ink in the skin, some of it will break down over time. Literally anything you get will be different in 30 years, a car, home, couch, phone. All of those when you get them new are relevant to the time and wear down and trends will have changed. But that's life. I would also argue that most older people don't care what it looks like 3 decades later because its about the story and its expected to be faded

    • @RandomShinyThoughts
      @RandomShinyThoughts 4 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      Absolutely! And a big thing with tattoos is how well you do aftercare. You can have the best artist in the world but if you don't look after your tattoo then it's gonna fade or blur out more than if you'd looked after it properly.

    Ok so now that I'm 45 i'm basically getting all my tattoos I got at age 18-20 either covered up or reworked. The lines are really faded and breaking up, the lighter colors(whites, yellows)are all gone while the darker colors (reds, greens, blues) are still there but really light. Nothing in life is the same after 30 years. The funny part is thinking you'll actually be into the tattoos you got at a young age when you're older. I've only kept a small portion of my teenage tattoos reworked while covering most of them up now. Not because the artist did a bad job originally but because I just wasn't into the subject matter that much anymore. The things you find cool at 19 you probably won't be so hardcore into at 43.

      It is different for every person, but if I tattoo something on myself, then it means that this thing has a huge impact on me and changed my life, my mindset, etc. So even if I won't be into it 30 years later, the impact won't go away, because this thing already changed me and to a certain extent shaped me as a person. That's why I think I will not regret any of my tattoos (that are done professionally), because the story and meaning behind them will forever be a part of me and my life.

    I love seeing super old tattoos on people that are all blown out and faded I think they look so much more interesting! Surely the most important factors in how well a tattoo ages is aftercare and sun exposure? Like you could have a super saturated tattoo by an amazing artist but if you scratch it and fail to use whatever aftercare creams it's gonna heal like trash and not hold up

    It has to do with the style for sure. That’s why american traditional and japanese traditional uses such saturated colours and can last longer. But it has to do with the colours you use as well, reds and yellows will not last as long, fade out faster especially if exposed to too much sunlight. Darker colours like the blacks or dark blues/dark greens obviously last longer

    Bold will hold and black can stay black. My extensive coverage is a mix of Polynesian tribal and black & grey, all completed when I was 40-43. I am now 66. I knew color would fade so I went black. I think it depends on the artist's skill (and my choice to not use color). My tribal leg tattoos are solid black and have never even been touched up. My realistic sea turtle still looks awesome. On the other hand I have a 6" Japanese koi that was outlined by a different artist that has mushed out a lot. I am convinced that artist skill in finding the right layer in the skin is critical to longevity, and avoiding sun.
