Motown Records Success Due Largely to Family Berry Gordy Born Into

  • Berry Gordy created the most successful Black-owned independent record corporation in the United States and perhaps in the world. The Detroit Black family that he was born into developed a loving, supportive, creative environment where the entire family thrived - parents as well as children. Today the music they created along with the Motown family of artists is legend. The music endures and lives on. This video primarily traces Berry's and the rest of the family's endeavors from 1936 to 1960 when Motown Corporation was Incorporated.

Wow this was so cool, informative, and so interesting. It really is a shame that most of these historical buildings are just gone. I completely agree there should be some type of markings for those areas. The Gordys, Motown, and Berry Gordy are American history and should be memorialized.

Thank you very much for presenting a story of the Gordy Family, including Berry, whose entrepreneurial spirit paved the way for Hitsville, U.S.A. to become Motown Records, and to give black singers, dancers, instrumentalists, and songwriters a chance to profit from their hard work without their work being exploited by white record companies, a common practice in 1950's America. At least, Motown was family, so to speak, by the way they watched out for each other. One of the greatest stories of not only Black excellence, but American excellence.

Thank you very much for this look at Mr. Gordy and his family. It was very informative; this story should be told on a larger platform. It outlines the
structures that were formulated that helped to enhance the growth of Motown. It also demonstrated how working together as a family helped with ensuring that the development of this organization was started with a strong committed solid foundation that its growth was built upon. Mr. Gordy's intelligence, his work ethics, along with his commitment to getting things done are the blueprints by which this great company was launched and grown. This history needs to be made known to the masses. It will serve as a tremendous example of what can be done if the commitment is there, and the leader possesses the vision, and knowledge to understand what they want to be.

@@wmpetroff2307 The Marvelettes came to Motown, according the Gladys Horton, with the group name made up of the words that meant "Can't Sing". They left Motown after getting signed to it to learn how to sing (I'm sure this puzzled Berry Gordy). They later came back, after learning how to sing, with the hit "Mr. Postman". Wow! Gladys Horton was very angry with Berry Gordy and Smokey Robinson for not giving them the respect and recognition for creating the Motown sound. Gladys Horton said that in the end Berry Gordy disrespected their contribution. And, she took it to her grave!

I can say after seeing a video of the fantastic song ''Don't Mess With Bill'' I noticed a fine potential with the Marvelettes. From insiders, always have I heard how Gershwin and Irving Berlin conned many, many young hopeful songwriters from their music pieces, sound and copyrights whereupon the songwriters died penniless with never any recognition or credit. That being said Thank you MARVELETTES for YOUR style!
