  • Sunday 23rd June saw Peppercorn A1 Pacific No.60163 'Tornado' making her second foray into Cornwall, as she hauled Pathfinder Railtours' 'The Summer Cornishman' from Bristol to Par and back. This was the first time I had seen her on the main line for over two years, so I was keen to see what she could do over the South Devon and Cornish banks.
This video should have kicked off at the usual spot at Flax Bourton, however, this was found to be inaccessible when we arrived. Instead, we find ourselves on Bartletts Bridge, on the approach to Parson Street Station, a location I have seen done many times, but, never actually tried myself, until now. The A1 is seen in good form as she powers away from Bristol, passing the site of the once extensive Malago Vale carriage sidings, situated on the right, now long gone and occupied by housing.
Next up, we're back to a more familiar location, as we find ourselves at Tigley, ready to capture Tornado attacking the 1 in 52 section of Rattery Bank, which she does in superb fashion! Afterwards, it was a dash down into Cornwall, to see Tornado on the climb away from St Germans. With ourselves perched under the trees at Treboul, to get some cover from any potential rain, we see 60163 powering into view, before shutting off several times after a bout of slipping. She managed to find some grip, while taking a more cautious approach up the 1 in 68 gradient.
The final shot of the day brought us to Sparkwell Bridge, just before the summit of the notorious climb up Hemerdon Bank, the majority of which is two miles of 1 in 42. This would be a complete contrast to the performance witnessed up Rattery Bank, being a rather cautious ascent in comparison. I'm not sure of the reasons, although it may be in part due to the massively cut down servicing time, as a result of the depot at St Blazey being out of bounds for Tornado and her stock. This necessitated a move which saw the entire consist towed from Par to Plymouth Friary by a DBC Class 66, leaving less than an hour for the turning and servicing. This may have affected the condition of the fire, with barely any time to bring it back up to a suitable condition for the return run. All pure speculation, of course, and I only have a vague idea of what I'm talking about. In any case, she at least made it up the bank, just a bit more slowly than I had envisaged, reaching a minimum speed of 11.5mph before the gradient eased off a little.
It was good to see her again!
Filmed on a Panasonic VXF990 with a Pro Sound L92AA microphone.

My wife and I were on the train that day. It was just one day of a 30 day American railfan's dream jaunt around the UK. I am gradually sharing the whole adventure at my TH-cam channel.
What a disappointment this day was, being cooped up on the train all day, knowing that that magnificent machine was up there and I could barely see or hear it. Thinking "man, I wish I could be out there chasing it." Then, I got to talking to some guys in the snack car and mentioned that a few weeks earlier I was chasing the Big Boy across Wyoming (I live in Denver) and would probably be out there chasing it again when it came back. Boy, were they jealous! Well, every dog has it day, and anyway I knew some crazy Brits would be out there chasing this and I could watch it on TH-cam eventually. Yours is my favorite, love the way you work in the wildflowers and the setting. Oh, and I just made up the "disappointment" bit. Thanks for this.

Fair play Kris, you work hard to find these stunning locations. Tornado looked and sounded in superb condition...what a performer....!!

Great video, although my life flashed before me in the opening seconds, "Bartletts bridge"- spent many a happy evening there in the late 50's. We used to climb over the parapet on the embankment side to sit in comfort, looks terribly overgrown now though. I also see that there are houses where the carriage sidings used to be.
    Thanks for this.

Super video. Can anyone tell me what was the maximum load for a King over the Devon banks without assistance?

Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it :) As far as I'm aware, the maximum load for a King is 9, these days.

Thoroughly enjoyed, thanks Kris, with superb shots in excellent locations. A brilliant pan in the second shot. The one topic your detailed description doesn't cover is the extensive use of the whistle in your last shot... any ideas? Kind regards, Bob

Many thanks as always, Bob. Glad you enjoyed it. I imagine they were whistles to the crowd, but also whistles of relief, for reaching the top of the climb ;)

Lovely shooting and sound, as always. Technical question, if I may, (I use the same camera as you) - do you use some kind of remote zoom control?

Many thanks, Nick. I use the standard zoom rocker that's onboard the camera.

@@SpeedToTheWest Crumbs! - such control - I find it difficult to get a steady zoom, even using my phone to control it via wifi. Well done you - I must persevere. Nick
