Any old-school tune yard fans that knew where this all came from. She is amazing looping sounds and vocals I really hope she is apart of the mixing of this new way of getting her music out there.
how awesome is this video... I teach kids a lot of kids this age- so often they are portrayed as simplistic overly naive people- this video highlights the complexity of the individual at an early age- and their awesome sauce! diggg
I love that sax break. It reminds me a bit of Ian McDonald's solo in 21st Century Schizoid Man but then it goes off into territory that sounds more like some of the stuff Terry Riley used to do. Very tasty
No. The kids had an absolute blast filming this. Mimi Cave is an awesome director and always makes everything exciting and fun, and anything Merrill is involved with is super fun. =)
i only just found your music but DAMN youre good!!!!! from the music to the lyrics to apparently even the music video, everything is just top notch. i wanna be like you when i grow up lmao
Brightworks is such a cool school. I WISH my daughter attended it. A good chunk of this was filmed inside a shipping container in the school area, which is why it probably doesn't look like the school.
princessem1981 I loved going there. I remember this shoot vividly and yeah the shipping container usually contained a set of chop saws but they stripped it out and painted it for the video. It really was an amazing school to attend especially at that age.
Video is directed by the same director of "Bizness," Mimi Cave. I think if you go to her vimeo or website you'll see it's really just her style and Merrill's style combined.
Darren Browne Yeah can't stop dancing and smiling whenever that ad's popped up over the last few weeks; been meaning to return to this vid during that time so that I could hear it in full again. And now you can too when you read my reply. And I can again when you reply back or +1 me... ;)
With her voice -- and many looping boxes and vocal processors. See clips of the live band for a better idea of how it all happens. Great band because of the ideas not the technology but they do what they do well with it.
My guess would be because they are such free spirits and don't worry what you will think because they are following the direction and very well, I might add. Do you picture yourself doing all the things and faces that they did?
"[Spoken] Ladies and gentleman, Merrill is performing at the [Singing] My country 'tis of thee Sweet land of liberty How come I cannot see My future within your arms? Your love it drags me down Into the underground My country bleeding me I will not stay in your arms No not yet At the Salvation Army Making us all stand in a line While Mommy and Daddy make up And try to make up their mind Oh the shame I felt When those histories mentioned my name! If only I could forget But memory's my favorite game We cannot all have it Well what I am I supposed to say to those other guys So sorry but you only stood half a chance Now it's over and they're walkin all over you We cannot all have it Well why is there juice dripping under your chin When they have nothing why do you have something When they have nothing The worst thing about living a lie Is just wondering when they'll find out I've got me, you've got you That's one plus one plus two I never told you what to do But then you put me in some box I've got you, you've got me Like a baby's got a bumblebee I told myself I'd have to jump higher If I was gonna get over your shit We cannot all have it Well what do you want me to say to the others Oh yes there's a place for you But that place is underneath the cushion of my behind We cannot all have it Well why did you say so! With my eyes open how can I feel happy? With my eyes open If nothing of this is ours How will I ever know when something's mine?"
nai williams don't worry it was only a pigs heart. Also it was a super fun school to go to. It's called brightworks and it's in San Francisco. I went there and was there for the filming of this (most of the kids in this are my classmates). It was a dope school. Technically not just an elementary school though.
I would say this video is definitely in the same style as the "Bizness" video. Merrill very obviously comes from a theater/modern dance background, and that comes through a lot in these two videos. However, I think "Bizness" had more of a storyline to it while "My Country" is more about images. All the featured performers are great, but I think love the kid with the bass the most. That kid looks like a young Patrick Wolf or Elly Jackson -- so rock star.
2021 and I'm still watching this wonderful video and listening this AWESOME song. Love u, tUnE-yArDs. You're AMAZINGGGG.
top up on this unique mofo 2day
😮😅uu 😅😮😅😮😮😮😮uu
I've watched a few of their videos now and it ALWAYS looks like Merrill is having a blast! You can't help but not be happy after watching them.
Id go down swinging to defend the name of her authenticity
This is the final boss of art school
💯💯💯
🤣🤣
Brightworks in San Francisco... you're not wrong
the sax thing at 2:40 will never not be rad as hell
Sarah Grant even four years later? I think it’s still just as amazing
Can confirm in 2023 😊
Any old-school tune yard fans that knew where this all came from. She is amazing looping sounds and vocals I really hope she is apart of the mixing of this new way of getting her music out there.
Her videos are amazing, the set is fun to be on, and the camera crew from 4AD is just really respectful.
the best band to listen to when you are down . the music is so happy 😁😁😁
the lyrics are a love-hate anthem about the USA 😂
Most of their songs are about societal pain-
@@shawnbay2211 dude I made this comment when I was like 13 I didn't know what anything ment
Just another day at Tune Yard daycare
George A it's called brightworks and it's in San Francisco. They moved to a different location though.
Yeah! We love the San Francisco Rock Project here at Etymotic. Smart and talented kids who already know how to protect their hearing for a lifetime.
Carolynn Travis don't forget the brightworks kids. We were there too!
2023... such an amazing song, this one still gives me chills.
how awesome is this video...

Very tasty
sophomore year in high school this was my jam!! 3 years later and it's still such a rockin song!
How in the hell does this only have 415,000 views?!
Fabulous! Now when are we getting a new tune yards album?!
No. The kids had an absolute blast filming this. Mimi Cave is an awesome director and always makes everything exciting and fun, and anything Merrill is involved with is super fun. =)
so much joy.
Incredible band. Love and admire them
mine do too, but some of the oddest music, such as merrills, is some of the most brilliant and creative! They don't know what they're missing!

Just saw them in concert a few nights ago and the music is so much better live then recorded , such an amazing show.
Brightworks is such a cool school. I WISH my daughter attended it. A good chunk of this was filmed inside a shipping container in the school area, which is why it probably doesn't look like the school.

Darren Browne Yeah can't stop dancing and smiling whenever that ad's popped up over the last few weeks; been meaning to return to this vid during that time so that I could hear it in full again. And now you can too when you read my reply. And I can again when you reply back or +1 me... ;)
This is the childhood I meant to have. I so much more than like this.
With her voice -- and many looping boxes and vocal processors. See clips of the live band for a better idea of how it all happens. Great band because of the ideas not the technology but they do what they do well with it.

awesome 4th of july jam...
Best pre school ever
djh540 k-12 school technically but yeah it was great. It's called brightworks. I loved it.
My guess would be because they are such free spirits and don't worry what you will think because they are following the direction and very well, I might add. Do you picture yourself doing all the things and faces that they did?
Wow, this vid is well edited :)
AHHHHHHHH I love this song it is so catchy
where do they find those awesome kids!! Cool!
marta lučić a school called brightworks in San Francisco
the only complaint I hear about this song is that it's 'weird.' funny, I use that as a compliment regularly.
great song!
we love tune-yards.
My butt grooves, and I have no control.

A.M.A.Z.I.N.G!!!!
My head was going up and down :)
Gave me goosebumps lol
Even though I'm a bit disgusted by the human heart beating, tUnE-yArDs never ceases to amaze me! Wish I had this in elementary school! :D

That girl playing the bass is just the coolest kid ever.
Just discovered this on Spotify by accident through Google Assistant misunderstanding me lmao.
Not disappointed though!!! This is DOPE.
Brill video!

Revolutionary.
This song has grown on me since I got the album, I think I'll put it in a DJ set !!!! #Partyjam
I would love to see the behind the scenes for this video.
