Wonderful community, thanks Ryan for recording these moments. Lovely to get to know Scott and his family better. Like a sequel for his book "Eat & Run".
Too Cool! Scott is the ultimate runner! He was the reason that I became a whole food plant runner. I met him at Runners Roost Denver when his book came out! You know the coolest people!
@@duzer hey, Ryan! Just curious, I noticed Scott was wearing a glucose monitor. Was this for Type I or II reasons or just for him to track his blood sugar in general?
I really enjoy your videos Ryan. As a 63 year old ex-gymnast who competed until 45 years old, I use your motivation and excitement to keep my blood boiling with new challenges. I've switched to ultra-light backpacking. Thank you for this video. Scott is one of my hero's. His sacrifices and triumphs, I believe, have motivated and helped thousands to become better versions of themselves. What a way to leave your mark on the world!
Ryan - amazing video - the production value is high yet it feels raw, honest and authentic. I agree with a lot of the comments posted here but one thing I do want to point out that while Scott is a beast in his own right, the real star of this video (Besides the kids) is Jenny - GOAT partner. Her unwavering support and honesty shows how important family support is to chase down these adventures and how much more richer those adventures are when your better half and family are included. Thx for posting this Ryan!!!!
This was awesome, seeing a legend in his element and struggling through an injury. If you've read his books you know his toughness mentally and physically are next level, so I can't imagine how much he was hurting. Kudos to Scott and his crew, thanks so much for sharing Duzer! Even a Speedgoat cameo! Amazing stuff!
I needed this video today. There's a lesson here for all of us about being willing to want, and willing to try and willing to call it when it's needed. And being willing to move through the starts or stops or whatever happens.
It's an inspiration to see that not finishing is not failing, but just another path. Life is about the journey, the attitude when dealing with adversity. Just take another step. Then another one.... then another....keep going... whatever that means for you.
Scott, Big shout out for being an inspiration to all T1D's! I can't tell you how much it meant to see you do this with such grace, energy, and confidence. Thank you Ryan for your amazing support & energy on the trip as well as making this video so we could join in the adventure. You guys rock.
Thanks for documenting the adventure. I was introduced to Scott and Jenny through your channel and read their book, North. That got me interested in running at my young age of 50. Now I just enjoy being out on a trail, whether I'm running, hiking, walking, or riding my bike and I don't sweat injuries so much, because I know that I'll get back out there after healing up. I just stay within my abilities and enjoy the experience while learning my limits. It was great to see the AT and Scott and family and crew on video, especially after having visualized it in my head while reading "North". The video brought the experience more to life, and the book was great even without seeing any video. Thanks again I enjoy watching your videos and seeing all the trail magic and the amazing people.
Your video captures what the trail is really like - gnarly, to put it mildly. And I got so much out of listening to Scott talk as he moved through the woods and up and down the trail and then later back in Boulder talking with Jenny about the experience. The way you have brought to life for the viewer the range of emotions and sensations experienced by Scott, Jenny, the kids, the crew, is extraordinary. Scott has been for many years and remains one of my heroes, and his being vegan and an ultra runner have been a source of great inspiration to me. And Jenny is pretty darn special, too. Thank you so much, Ryan, for creating this amazing documentary.
Great video Ryan. You proved that you are a great interviewer, a great listener, a great motivator and great child minder. I think Scott and his wife are learning that, with the passing years, you can’t step into the same water twice. Sometimes you just have to try to find out if you can. Well done for trying.
I feel for Scott, especially with such an amazing crew. Having been an ultra runner myself from Virginia, this attempt reminds me of legend David Horton's attempt at the FKT of the Continental Divide Trail in 2008 (I believe). It ended after 1 day due to dehydration in New Mexico. The point being that a sudden disappointment does not deter. Scott will undoubtedly continue inspiring us all.
I live in VA too now neighbor. I also used to live in NM and I’m endlessly amazed at the stories of mischief that happen there. Did you see RVD’s adventure in NM during his run at the CDT?
So stoked you’ve been doing a lot of trail running! And being with the man, the myth, the legend; pure excellence with the documentation. Love it, thanks for being awesome!
Hey Ryan I found your channel about 6 months ago. You already put me on a bike, I’m now waiting for my second hand Kona Rove to switch from the e-bike because why not. Now you trying to have me running on trails man, you are a force. Also, I have two young kids and it’s very inspiring to see that beautiful family spend time together. Keep up the beautiful work Ryan, to me you deserve the best.
Simply amazing, inspiration, moving!!! It takes COURAGE to start a goal like this, but even more DETERMINATION to know when to STOP!!! Thank you for being real!!
Thank you for this - it was a really interesting story. I first came across Scott when you two ran the early COVID neighborhood marathon. Then I read his book and really enjoyed learning about his running journey as a plant-based athlete. The footage from the trail here was amazing (including how you can do it plant-based) and, despite the title Defeated Dreams, I was cheering him on at every turn. Super inspiring to a pretty novice trail runner.
Mira would make me run. I’m lucky. I have a daughter and a dog. I can say from personal experience, the dog is amazing, but is like a flashlight next to a supernova compared to the daughter in motivation. Enough boasting for me. I need to be motivated to do better.
For real for real, I am just wrapping up the end of Scott’s book on his first FKT! It’s so crazy to see footage of another attempt! I’m just starting the video, excited to keep watching!!!
Loved this video. Thanks for supporting your friends and making this video. I fell in love with Scott and Jenny listening to them read North. I am so happy for them and their beautiful children and that they set out to try it again. Obviously bummed how this turned out - but still what an honor to revisit some of the last parts of their former journey first.
Watching this video I came out with a couple points. Number 1 is family first. Being a father of two girls myself, i know how hard it is to balance dreams and aspirations and being there for your kids. My girls are always telling stories of what WE did together, so I know I did good in their eyes. Second thought is that even though the final goal wasn’t reached. People can come together to help out. People that had never met before came together to help full fill a dream of another. That’s amazing! People are cool, people are the magic. Lastly, our body, mind and soul are wired to do and explore. Don,t deny yourself an opportunity when they come along. There will always be a reason to not go or post pone. Go anyway, don’t wait! I’m 63 years old now with the spirit of a 20 year old. Don’t let time slip away, because I can tell you for sure it’s way harder on your entire body at 63 than it was at 23. I am wishing I had done more of these types of things way back then instead of watching videos of other people living out their dreams today. Cheers everyone!
Scott, literally I have just finished your book and I want to thank you for this experience. You are the man! Hats off to you and this book will be the present I will give to everybody from now on. I am from Transylvania, and there are some amazing places to run here. It is worth a visit, if you have the chance. All the best, Monika.
Awesome video! I've been following Scott for quite a while. From all his ultrasound he ran to his 2015 A.T. fkt. I even bought his books. What a bummer that his hike had to end so soon. Its probably the first time I known of that he had to quit. Hopefully he'll heal up and get back out there.
Ryan- What a different, but super interesting, story! So cool to see you playing on the east coast. I have been going to Moosehead Lake, just 15 miles north of the trail crossing where your story started, since I was born. Literally just went by that parking area a few weeks back. The AT is such a different animal than anything I have hiked out west, and your camera angles and the shots you used show the challenging rawness better than most--especially when you tied it together with your live-time interviews of Scott and what he was feeling. Great work! Thanks for taking us along. You certainly have had a BUSY summer! Pete PS. Sure hope you and your posse got something good to eat at Spring Creek BBQ across the street from the gazebo in Monson. Kim & Mike rock!
Ryan you can see those times you got him to talk his energy came back and he got that 2nd... thousandth wind. I like this docu interview style cuz you can keep up with them. Good job man.
Humans are amazing creatures, Scott is proof of this. The attempt alone is mind boggling. Great edit Ryan thanks for putting this together and giving the community what they want/need to see these days.
Watched your channel for years. Listened to Scotts Audiobook and just discovered this video 3 days after finishing his book. Could'nt believe it! Kinda happy I listened the audiobook first. To now see it live is really inspiring. Looking forward to run my first marathon next spring. All thanks to all af you crazy inspiring maniacs😁 love your content ryan. Keep it up!
I know what kind of pain Scott was going through, I’ve been there with my runs, having a meniscus tear off the knee, couldn’t run 3 metres in front of me. It was really good to have good friends around to help with team Duzer morale !! A wee history for you, the sewing machine that Jenny was using Singers sewing machine where made a place called Clydebank in Scotland my home town. The factory is no longer there anymore 👍
thanks for bringing this to us, it was a great watch. I think there is a lack of recognition and value given to things that don't "work out as planned". There can be a lot of amazing experience in those things, those moments are so much of life and so much of life is in them
Scott seems the poster child for mind over matter. His bio-mechanical movement does not efficient or even good to me, but what he's able to accomplish is amazing. I'm very impressed. This is another video where I love the atmosphere and "vibe" that you created by the storing telling, the shot selection, the music. It all comes together in what I feel is a "peaceful" way that I just enjoy. I definitely enjoy your style of story telling, shooting, and editing.
Great video! I ran with him a little in '15 in PA and NJ. The kids make it fun. He's incredible. Starting with Maine can certainly grind your body up early.
I grew up in central coast CA, I knew Escobar really well as a kid. Outstanding dude and family. This documentary's great! Come to Utah soon and hit up our trails! I'll join along
Wow two badasses collide on the trail! I met Van Duzer in my early 20's at Bolder Boulder. He wouldn't know me from Adam lol, but was definitely inspiring. Then read Scott's book like 8 years ago, also very inspirational.
@@duzer doing great that was almost 15 years ago. Since then I kept active and now starting my 11th year as a P.E. teacher. Got involved in local recreation groups and have now written multiple grants for recreation amenities. Just got bike repair stations installed along our Arkansas River path in Pueblo, CO. Also got a strider bike grant last year so I can do a cycling unit each year with my K-2nd graders. Adopted two local trails that we clean weekly/monthly. It would have been easier to move out of Pueblo, but I stayed have helped it become a new recreation hot spot. Obviously, it wasn't just me I was a small piece of the puzzle. Our new levee trail system is just about complete. Our downtown will also be receiving a pedestrian renovation. Lot's of Pueblo positives happening.
well done video covering all of this Ryan. Crazy to think that Scott is able to do this sort of stuff at 47, feel bad that he wasn't able to complete it.
Another great video. It's pretty cool you are able to get up close an personal with Jurker the legend and his family. What a great crew as well!! I am just now reading the book about his first attempt.
I’d crew / pace Jurek in a heartbeat! Go get it Scott! Having said that Scott’s gait was obviously impaired even in the early shots of this. He leans hard to the right so can imagine blowing out the inside of his right quads.
Amazing video! Failure sucks! Failure stings! But it was great to see Scott putting it all in perspective in the overall arc of life and family. But, If one wants to live a robust life filled with adventure, failure is inevitable. Scott gives us a great lesson on how to deal with it. Thanks for this video, Ryan. I'm bookmarking it so I can watch it again when I encounter failures in my life.
63 year old bike tourer. Trips usually 1-2 weeks. Do them solo. Motel and camping. Have not done bike packing like you do yet. I am so enjoying your Great Divide series, half way through. I must find a way to do some of the Great Divide, maybe with a tour group. Love your food choices but additional thing I carry (a over 60 thing)that you don’t, a bag of prunes. It’s all about keeping things moving on a bike adventure. LOL. I became a Patreon supporter today. Love your stuff. Ride safe. Larry
Thank you Ryan. Great content. Listened while on a recent long run. Closing moments on the couch...I'll reach out to Buck Murdock for clarity: "Irony can be pretty ironic sometimes." Scott is attempting to summarize the puzzle pieces of his journey while his offspring is searching for a missing puzzle piece...
Great video - just reality and how to deal with it. LIFE. (I think he should go back and do it again. :) Why not!? I think many people would fund it, and also be the support crew. He's only 47. That's not old at all! Go, go, go! You need to film a part II! I hiked, trail ran, and mt. biked in Maine and even more in New Hampshire for years when I lived in Massachusetts and miss that landscape. I hope to be back living in New England soon. Thank you for taking us all along. I miss the roots, rocks, climbs, and the pure exhaustion after a great day on the trail. Heaven. You're making great videos and I enjoy them all.
Wonderful community, thanks Ryan for recording these moments. Lovely to get to know Scott and his family better. Like a sequel for his book "Eat & Run".

Babe wake up, Duzer dropped another banger
Get up get up!!! ;)
well done video covering all of this Ryan. Crazy to think that Scott is able to do this sort of stuff at 47, feel bad that he wasn't able to complete it.
This is awesome! thank you or showing us inside this attempt. Well made video! Scott is definitely someone to look up to.
He sure is!
This is absolutely awesome. Thank you for this so much
Another great video. It's pretty cool you are able to get up close an personal with Jurker the legend and his family. What a great crew as well!! I am just now reading the book about his first attempt.
North is an awesome book, enjoy!
Great job Duz!
I’d crew / pace Jurek in a heartbeat! Go get it Scott! Having said that Scott’s gait was obviously impaired even in the early shots of this. He leans hard to the right so can imagine blowing out the inside of his right quads.
Awesome video ! Great show and also props to the camera man . Really nice 👌
Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome! I just finished the book!
Thanks for taking the time to watch this!
Ride safe. Larry
That’s close to where we go fishing, Maine is a gorgeous state, middle of nowhere for the most part…
Man I thru-hiked the AT in 2008, and this makes me want to get back out there!
It’s so beautiful! I was very impressed
My favorite part: Real hiking viking’s first day of school. Yes, the other kids are going to love you.
Yeah, he's a funny dude!
Good stuff! Bummer about the injury! Give it another go! Katahdin is such a good walk! We try to get up there at least once a year.
Owesome work!
Thanks
Great story telling 💯🙌
Thanks!
She is perfect for him. Beautiful family.
They sure are
Thank you Ryan.
Oooh, that’s a solid correlation
great video, great people......one never fails, we pick ourselves up and prepare for the next challenge
So True!
Good stuff as usual Duz!
Much appreciated
What a cool video! It must have been so cool hangin" out with those legends.
It sure was!
Thanks so much for your comment!! I was so blown away by the beauty of the area
What absolutely beautiful people
The dude is still a legend!
