- A small photographic study in black and white of the numerous Coade Stone Sculptures dotted around the Croome Court country estate in Worcestershire, UK
Coade stone or Lithodipyra or Lithodipra was stoneware that was often described as an artificial stone in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It was used for moulding neoclassical statues, architectural decorations and garden ornaments that both were of the highest quality and remain virtually weatherproof today.
Although not invented by Eleanor Code 1733-1821 she likely perfected both the clay recipe and the firing process, producing a most durable and convincing stoneware.
Eleanor Code was a pioneer and businesswoman: She was best known for manufacturing Neoclassical statues, architectural decorations and garden ornaments, and was arguably the most successful businesswoman of the 18th century.
This short video focuses on the following Coade stone sculptures as the primary interest.
