Travel credit cards tend to have some incredible signup bonuses to help you pay for your next flight, hotel, rental car, or cruise. For example, I recently applied for the Citi AAdvantage Executive card, which has a welcome offer to earn 100,000 American Airlines miles after spending $10K in the first 3 months. Unfortunately, I received an instant denial, and the Citi reconsideration line also said “no.”
Looking back on my credit card application, I saw a couple areas I should have improved further before hitting that Apply button.
So, MY credit card DENIAL should hopefully help you with YOUR future credit card APPROVAL, if you learn from my mistakes!
I’ll also reveal my credit score, credit inquiries, and more throughout the video to give you an idea of my broader credit situation.
For now, I’m going to focus on avoiding new credit cards in the hopes of cleaning up my credit report a bit. That way, if/when the rumored Citi Strate Elite card launches, I’ll ideally have better approval odds at that time. I’ll also make sure to keep my credit card utilization down while also using my existing Citi credit cards in the weeks leading up to a potential application.

Very instructive & informative Mark - thanks for sharing👍🏾
👍👍
Double denial definitely stinks! Glad you were able to get the CC via product change. Thanks for the info + video!
It does, but yes, happy to have the card again now that I'm flying AA a lot more & can use their clubs 👊
Mark you are honestly the best, i always look forward to hearing your stories and the credit cards that you apply for and why you do it. I am happy that you were able to transfer for your card even though you weren’t able to get the bonus
Thanks Miles! Glad the sharing of personal experiences is helpful!
Of all the videos on CC's I love yours the best! Keep it up. Liked and subscribed!
Glad you like them & thank you! 🥇
I appreciate you doing these application videos. The past four cards I received, I carefully watched your videos first. Thank you!
Glad you like them & find value in them! Congrats on your approvals 💯
OK we will try again, thank you for the information.Good luck !
💯👍
In the end, I did a product change from my AAdvantage MileUp card (with no bonus) 😬
Mad lad!
Oh dang. You really wanted that card huh.
@@mistaskidda😂🤙
@@MasonsTurtle- Yep 😬 I even told myself I'd get it again once an elevated offer came around. Well, it came around, but I simply couldn't get it haha.
@@MrBankRelations- They sure are! Used to take forever in the past (weeks!), but lately I've been pleasantly surprised. Way faster now & zero hassle.
Another tip, Citi will not approve you if you have 0 balances on your cards, I know this when I got denied the first time for the Custom Cash at the beginning of the year.
Was that based on your experience, or also confirmed by a bunch of other data points from other people? Did Citi confirm the reason?
Based on my experience, and what I researched, Citi does not like it when your revolving balances are too low. Even non citi accounts apply.
Thank you for this advice! I will keep an eye on all of this while applying for their cards, even though I don't have one yet. Goal is to get 3.
👍👍
You still my hero Mark. Btw, I remember you had this beautiful card a few years ago.
Indeed! I've had the card twice in the past 👍 I tend to pick up the card whenever I'm flying AA frequently, since nowadays that's a requirement to use their club network. In the end I did a product change, so I've got it again!
I applied for a Citi card with all three credit bureaus locked and they only wanted me to lift my Equifax! For reference, I live in Oklahoma.
I hope this DP is helpful for someone!
Congrats on the product change!
Love your content
- Ivan
Legit! Clearly, Citi pulls different bureaus based on location 👍 Totally jealous of that EQ pull (haven't gotten one of those in forever)!
Wow! I never thought I would see that happen...
You getting denied for a card that I just got approved for? Wow! I thought it would have been the opposite LOL. When I got approved for the card, I was absolutely shocked as I was expecting to be denied.
Welcome to the credit card game! 😂 Congrats on your approval!
Saludos, brother desde Puerto Rico 🇵🇷
A ti desde los EEUU! 🇺🇸
Thanks for making this video, great info. I've had 1 citi card open for the last four years. Also I am guilty of minimum spend on it. Few charges every month or 2 to keep it active. Iam curious on the new citi cards mentioned and also watching the Marriott and MGM partnership. See if it's a good time to jump on one of the Marriott cards.
👍👍
Good information! I think 100K AA miles expires tonight and I gotta think about it :D but rumored is that new upcoming citi card will have $750 AF ouch , that’s $200 more than my CSR AF lol
I've seen Sep. 06 on a couple blogs as the estimated expiration date for the AA Exec. 100K offer 👍

Good video. Btw I love the Citi Premier. Such an underrated card
Thanks! Glad ya like it! A strong earner card for sure.
I figured we’d hear about you applying for this card. It’s a shame you weren’t able to get it. I would have enjoyed hearing your opinion on the Admirals Club membership.
I got it anyway via product change 😁 (MileUp > Executive). I've had the Executive before in past years when I used Admirals Clubs very frequently. I'm a big fan of the AA club network for (a) lack of overcrowding (b) more quiet / business environment (c) relaxing (d) being productive. Historically, they've been awful for food (they're known for cheese cubes and veggie sticks w/ hummus 😂 But now this should be changing as AA is rolling out a new club design w/ elevated food offerings.
Great Input. I've been monitoring that. However, I don't have any reported installment loans. & I'm not buying a car. What else can. I purchase that way that reports as such?
Not worth taking on any debt to get a credit card. It's not a requirement for approval anyway.
Great Video. Is there an easy way to confirm my utilization prior to applying for a CITI card? Also, if denied do they keep the application open for a few months and you can have it reviewed again, or must you reapply with another hard pull?
I just look at my current reported utilization per card / across all cards via Credit Karma.
Not sure if Citi keeps their applications open.
How hard is it to get the custom cash card and would it make more sense to get a different card (lower or higher) up on citi then get the ccc as the second card then after a year + change the first card to a ccc? I don’t think I would ever want more than 2! :) goal would be everyday spending vs my chase ecosystem thx
I don't have a way of knowing exactly how hard / easy it is to get the CCC. If your goal is to maximize everyday spend with up to 2 cards, then the CCC is a fantastic option 🏆
My takeaway from this is that you never win with Citi. Thanks for sharing Mark! Sorry you got denied 😢
Well...I've won on 7 other occasions with Citi, so I wouldn't say never 😬
That is not true. He just has too many new accounts in a short period of time.
@@urosorlovic11that’s a lie, I have tons of opened account recently and Citi approved me
I've pretty much given up on Citi, I find them rather annoying. I had gotten the too low balance nonsense as well a while back.
😬
Same thing happened to me mark. Applied last month for citi premier and got instantly denied. Reconsideration line said I have to wait until mailed letter (no email). Then weird denial reasons in the letter and when I call recon line they instantly denied me with no reason or and not even giving any opportunity to change their mind. /'
Such a bummer 😐
I think the number one issue you’re running into is the recent accounts and inquiries. Citi is very sensitive to those and having more than 0 or 1 of either within the last 6 months is a huge no go for them. I just experienced this myself and am going to wait another month before reapplying so my accounts and inquiries age out a bit
I think you're right. However, I'd disagree on saying even 1 inquiry or recently opened account in the past 6 months is a "huge no go for them." Of the 7 Citi cards I've gotten over the years, a number of them were obtained with higher numbers than that. I've seen data points on both sides, so I cannot say how often or how strictly they enforce this kind of "rule."
Not true. I had 6 INQ and 6/24 when I was approved for the CitiBusiness card a few weeks ago.
Hi, Mark.
What did you do with the hard inquiries, and how did they effect your credit score, and credit worthiness?
1. I left the hard inquiries on my report. I do not encourage people to report them to the bureaus as 'false' simply because they got denied.
2. Didn't affect my score. Didn't affect my credit worthiness. In many cases, I don't really care about inquiries.
Did you watch 12:58 in the video?
I would normally suggest lowering credit limits prior to applying to improve exposure, but lord knows their algorithms are a mystery and it probably wouldn't matter. Not to mention that, unlike Chase, Citi doesn't allow you to simply reallocate credit lines.
I'm already preparing for the Strata cards. I've been gardening for a bit. I see people applying for Bilt cards with no bonuses and I'm like "what???" 😅
Proof that generalized advice doesn't always apply!
Haha I'm one of the people who got the Bilt Mastercard with no bonus 😂 Absolutely love it.
I had the AA Executive card but downgraded. Couldn’t justify the annual fee and their lounges aren’t the best
All depends on how much you use the lounges & how much you enjoy the experience when using them 😁
Sorry this happened Mark. You win a lot. You lose some. Just the name of the game.
I have Citi double cash, Custom Cash, Premier and AA Business card. I applied about 6 month to a year apart between those cards. (Because I was busy applying Amex and others) And I put a lot of spend on them, especially the Custom Cash. Never carried a balance but I constantly spend up to the limit each month. (limits are 6k to 20k in those cards) Not only do they send me new card offer letters but they constantly ups my spending limits. So I say put some time in between applications, (Doesn't have to be as long as a year like me but 6 month or so) and put some expenses on their cards. But What Do I know. You have more cards than me!
Thanks for the video!
Congrats on your approvals & thanks for sharing your timing strategy!
Mark, do a credit union savings secured loan (the higher the amount the better). Pay it down 90% before it starts reporting. You’ll get that 90% back into your savings account to put back on a credit card (if that’s you funded the loan). Then call and ask to setup auto payment for next 24mos. This should eliminate your loan issue. Plenty of videos here on TH-cam explaining the Navy Fed “pledge loan hack”, but it can done at all credit unions
Thanks for the tip! However, I'll pass. No interest in opening another debt-based product when it's not a requirement for approval in the first place.
Yep
😬
Same thing happened to me when i applied for a personal elevated offer on the Citi platinum aa card. Tempted to apply for the business version but i doubt they will approve me. When i called the reconsideration they were strict and rude. Basically like did you read the letter? The ketter is the reason have a nice day good bye.
Always frustrating to get a denial 😬 What were the reasons on your letter?
@@MarkReese same as yours. Except what was odd was that their was a different score used. Something like from 1-9900 and I had a 9025 and was denied. 8 inquiries on Experian and 6 new cards in 12 months. Experian score was not listed on the letter but was 747 in the app. I have yet to be approved by a single Citi card. Tried last year with 2 inquires and no new cards in 48 months and still denied for custom cash.
@@SmoothMoneyMoves - Sounds like that's their internal scoring system. Frustrating.
Mark whatnis considered a large balance how much the amount
That's relative to your credit limit, and I don't know what Citi would consider to be 'large.' I'd personally want all reported balances at 24% or less.
i have 7 pulls on my Experian report. i have their double cash and custom card which i use All the time. . i applied for the premier card and was approved for $20k. if I did not use their cards on a regular basis I probably would have been the declined
Thanks for sharing your data point!
Hey Mark, I had gotten approved. Citi said my Experian score was 726 and I had 23 inquires prior to the application. I also have 3 personal and 1 business card with Citibank. Maybe my datapoints would intrigue you lol.
Congrats! 💯 Thank you for sharing your data point 👊
23 inquiries? Like hard inquiries within 2 years? Brother.
@@SidViciousOne yeah I went hard last year with apps. Most of them will drop off by the end of the year and the middle of next year. Then I should be in good graces with Chase.
Does a mortgage count as an installment loan?
Yes.
I was approved for this card, never came after two months, so I canceled it which was like pulling teeth! The lady refused to believe I would cancel it
Bizarre!
Y’all heard about the god tri fecta built/curve card?
Yep.
How old was your newest card when you applied.
1 month.
I do have same issue as you do, many open accounts & inquiries, my newest card is 5 months old, doing my best not to apply for any card till May, have no Chase cards & far way over 5/24.
I got the business card aa card
Congrats! ✈️
Does Citi approve anybody????? The denied me in October of 2022 for the Citi Premier after pulling from my Experian Credit Report....Which my "Experian Report" is pretty good & my Experian Credit Score than was a "720"
Did you find out the reason(s) for the denial?
Do you bank with Citi?
Citi plays by their own rules i was basically denied for every card ive applied for and citi gave me a 5 digit credit limit
😆
Citi is really sensitive right now
I have been experiencing similar issues which I never have before.
I haven't had an issue with inquiries or recently opened accounts in the past either.
@@MrBankRelations yeah with the rumors of the 2 new cards coming out. I think it’s going to be difficult approvals
i got denied for citi simplicity with good credit etc
Frustrating 😕
I just got denied for the Altitude Reserve due to high utilization. They pulled Experian so I logged on and saw my score hasn't been updated since July 23rd. Nasty little surprise.
US Bank is very goofy in approving applicants especially balances, new accounts and inquiries within the last year and also having a relationship with them helps greatly
@@larryivey8118 So I've heard. I did open up a savings account with them and will aim a little lower with their Cash+ card.
Frustrating little surprise indeed haha. Yep...gotta look at the balances that have been reported...not the ones as of today.
What is the benefit of getting this card with so high AF?
There are many. The ones I care about are:
- Admirals Club membership
- Priority check-in, security, & boarding
- Earning 4X miles on AA purchases
Why would they give you more cards when you already have 7 of their cards...
Many issuers don't put a limit on the # of cards you can have. Rather, they may cap the total amount of credit extended.
@@MarkReese
Oh ok...thanks for the explanation...we don't have as many options up here in Canada when it comes to credit cards...unfortunately!
It’s against the law for them to deny you your own credit…
😬
Basically you got denied because Citi knows you’re not a profitable customer.
😂👍
Shitty Bank is very petty about too many inquiries. If you have more than 6 inquiries in 6 months, you will be denied no matter what your score and credit looks like.
I've seen arguments on both sides, not sure what to believe. In my experience with 7 of their cards, Citi hasn't been that sensitive to inquiries. For others, the opposite seems true. That said, I plan to have a fairly clean 6 months prior to trying again with Citi 😁👍
@@MarkReese sounds like a plan! I was just denied for the regular AA Platinum for inquiries so I’m gonna probably wait a year and try again. I want that bonus! Haha
@@danielcrotty8697it’s not the inquiries, I got 15 and was approved. I recommend banking with Citi and buying flights with AA. Show them you mean business and they’ll add you to the team
Capital One fucked me like this
☹
Welcome to the garden. 😬
Thank you 😬
Jeffrey Reese, plain and simple. Too many inquiries!!! That's it!!!
😬
Woah even you have a low low credit limit on a card? 😱😱😱 i couldn't imagine you would since you talk alot about credit cards
Yep! I've got a number of low-limit cards.
@@MrBankRelations I know I'm just surprised that he has that since he has lots of credit cards and I would imagine that he start off with more than 5k on all his cards
Of course you get denied to many inquiries . You could get 850 but inquiries will kill you. Just wait 2 year
No need to wait 2 years.
15 inquiries and I was approved for this card
Per your video from 18 AUG 2022 "Citi AAdvantage Executive World Elite Mastercard (Full Review 2022)", didn't you have this card in the past ???
I've had this card multiple times over the years.
@@MarkReese That makes sense. Wonder how much this factored into them denying you on this occasion. Cheers.
It’s amazing how they had his credit score higher on the paper they sent to him. That’s how you know this whole Credit stuff need to be revamped. It’s not accurate and it’s a stupid way. that they do it
Credit scoring is a wild game.
I would have approved you.
Thank you 😄

It's a terrible card
It's got good & bad. I'm not a fan of the overall product, but I am a big enough fan of a few select benefits for me to still get it via product change.
I think it’s an incredible card but to each its own
Mark, I’m worried about you. Maybe you should step back and leave the game for a bit like Ben and myself did.
Ben is not out of the credit card game. He just posted another CC video earlier today. I defy you to post any proof Ben is done with credit cards. Too bad you can't. Keep living in your delusional fantasy world.
