Daytona Beach Shores, Imminent Collapse?

  • Drone video I shot on 11/15/22 at my condo building at Daytona Beach Shores. I run South a bit to show the Pirates Cove and Lifeguard Station that Jim Cantore made famous during Hurricane Nicole. Its bad, really bad. My building got Red Tagged and engineers are trying to figure it out. Check out my previous videos to see the landscape after Hurricane Ian.

The 'beach' is now underneath where these building sit. The beach that was in front of the building line is gone. The Army Corp of Engineers could theoretically pump the sand back up to the place where it was once located. But any storm or rough sea could cause it to leave again. Better to abandon the buildings, tear them down and make a beach underneath where they sit. Of course they will never do that, but instead will fight the forces that are far greater than they are. I doubt this ends well for this area. The expense alone to put the sand back, temporarily is immense. I suppose they will expect the taxpayers across the country to foot the bill.

We were down there on the beach just before Hurricane Ian and were shocked and saddened to see the damage from that storm, then Nicole hit and it was so much worse.😔 So much has permanently changed but we hope to see Daytona and all of Florida - our home away from home - eventually recover from this natural disaster. ❤🙏

Nice footage of a bad situation. Interesting, they're using destruction debris as makeshift rip-rap while they fill up bags of sand as a makeshift seawall. I realize these are immediate and temporary measures to stave off further erosion. Also interesting (in a bad way) there is essentially no beach left. The waves though gentle are lapping up against the barriers. In older photos the beach is quite wide in this area and is now mostly gone. I've heard people say that it was Ian that landed the first blow then Nicole did the knockout punch. I hope I'm wrong but in the long run, I don't see any way those buildings teetering over the Atlantic can be salvaged. I'm on the Gulf coast and got hit hard by Ian later thinking Nicole would be a walk in the park for those on the east coast, silly me.

This is the Florida story, build close to the ocean, have a hurricane or two which destroys everything, build back in the same places and in the same way again and forget about what happened in the past. Thank you so much for posting this. We have been timeshare owners at the Dolphin for the past 38 years and were wondering about the damage. The first hurricane spared us, but the second took out about half of the beach front. I am happy that the pool, hot tub and sauna were not washed away, but know it will probably be a good while before we get to come back. We evacuated from the Dolphin right before Hurricane Ian hit and are grateful we got to enjoy a few days. It is a lovely place and community and we ache for all our friends in the area. I don't see how our beach will ever be able to let cars drive there again. High tide seems to be coming right up to the remaining sea walls. This will be a big change for all of us.

Great video. Lets me get this damage into prospective with all of your elevations and angles. What struck me was just how close the water is coming to A1A now. With the obviously lowered elevation of the beach these structures seem to be at the mercy of the incoming tides and no amount of financial investment can change that even if the money would somehow miraculously be available. It is just a dire situation.

For instance Towers Grande sits on a separate slab and doesn’t sit on same slab as the pool deck . They are safe and had a structural engineer look at it before anyone was allowed in. They are safe .hope this clears up some uncertainty. Each building is being looked at before anyone is allowed in.
